THE HOG CALL! Newsletter of the Arkansas Chapter of the Association of the United States Army 2nd QUARTER 2019

Educate – Connect – Inform

Our Arkansas Chapter co-hosted the celebration of the 244th Army Birthday with the National Guard Association of Arkansas on 14 June at Camp Robinson, North Little Rock, Arkansas. This was our largest ever gathering including Soldiers from multiple National Guard and US Army Reserve from Camp Robinson/Camp Pike as well as veterans. We wish to formally thank NGAA for co-hosting and for coordinating the location at the Camp Robinson MWR facility.

CSM(R) Tom Broom speaks to the importance of Citizen- Soldiers throughout our Army’s history.

Other Chapter Updates

• On 14 June 2019, the AUSA AR Chapter was officially recognized as a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner Program member. This allows us to formally recognized those Vietnam War veterans and award them their recognition pin. Concurrent with the gathering for the Army Birthday Celebration, AUSA-AR conducted its first Vietnam Period Recognition Ceremony during which COL(R) Harold Tucker (a Vietnam era vet) recognized the five attendees who had served during the qualifying period, officially recognized each veteran, and awarded them their official Vietnam War veteran pin. (see photos at right) Living United States veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, are eligible to receive one lapel pin. This is an official Department of Defense program begun as part of the 50th Commemorative of the Vietnam War. More information is available at https://www.vietnamwar50th.com/lapelpins/ or www.vietnamwar50th.com

• Prior to the Army Birthday celebration on 14 June 2019, the AUSA AR Chapter setup a display table (thanks to national for new AUSA and Young Professional pull up banners) in the Camp Robinson MWR building hallway near the post exchange. There, numerous soldiers and government civilians came by the table to pick up more information regarding what AUSA AR Chapter is about, what we do for the Arkansas Army Community, and resources available to Soldiers and family members. • Arkansas State AUSA President, LTC(R) David Cooper and Arkansas Chapter President COL(R) Harold Tucker traveled to Oklahoma City for the AUSA 4th Region Meeting 4-6 April. The highlight of the Meeting was to meet and hear from GEN(R) Carter Ham, the Chief Executive Officer of our National Association.

This venue change was very appropriate - to be among hundreds of citizens & other veteran organizations to pay our respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It was a great opportunity to introduce AUSA-AR to State officials or their staffers.

• Since the Arkansas Chapter serves the entire state, we recognize it is often difficult (or impossible) for members to drive 3-4 hours to meetings in Little Rock. The Executive board approved moving some meetings outside Little Rock on a rotational basis to better reach our membership in person. The first such meeting was held in the city of Hot Spring about 1.5 hours from Little Rock. Using the program "Batch GEO" COL(R) Tucker determined those members living in the area 20- 30 miles around Hot Springs. He emailed those members, announcing the June 26th meeting, and then held the meeting at a local eatery in Hot Springs. Though not as well AR Chapter President Harold Tucker and State President David Cooper attended as planned, this effort to meet with Mr. Nick Flannery and Mr. Bud Jameson to set-up and prepare reach our broader membership base for the Hot Springs General Membership Meeting and appreciated by many, so the & take monthly meetings outside of the Greater Little Rock area will continue. The Board agreed to try this in the North West, South Central and North East sections of the state for future meeting sites. Thanks to COL(R) Nick Flannery for coordinating the great Hot Springs meeting location! • State President David Cooper represented AUSA-Arkansas at the Little Rock Recruiting Company’s 24 July Swear-In Event to welcome Twenty-One new Soldiers from Arkansas into the Arkansas Army Community. The Oath of Enlistment was administered to the group in the rotunda of the Arkansas Capitol building by Lieutenant Governor/LTC(Promotable) John T. “Tim” (and AUSA Life Member).

• Other Chapter Activities – BG(R) Bud Jameson attended the Cp Pike/Cp Robinson Community Council meeting on 25 July and the Sherwood Military Support Council meeting on 8 August. These meetings are excellent venues to keep the local community and business leaders apprised of the needs and issues affecting the LTC(R) Cooper and LTC(P) Griffin pose with Arkansas Army Community and soliciting their officers from the Recruiting Company’s Chain of support through AUSA-AR. CHAPTER SUPPORT TO ARMY ROTC & JROTC

AR Chapter President Harold Tucker attended the University of Central Arkansas commissioning ceremony on 3 May. He discussed the role of being an officer, within the Profession of Arms, with the future Second Lieutenants and those parents in attendance. We have asked to be invited next year in order to add UCA to our Chapter’s “Constitutions For Commissionees” program that presents our pocket Constitutions to each new lieutenant as part of their commissioning. However, COL(R) Tucker WAS able to coordinate the Constitution presentations at the ASU- Harding commissioning.

AR State President LTC(R) David Cooper attended the University of Arkansas, ROTC awards ceremony in Fayetteville on 25 April, and presented the AUSA Medal award to Cadet Lauren Archer (left). He also presented the AUSA History award to Cadet Matthew Dougherty (right). He spoke to numerous cadets about the importance of officership and also about need to be part of the Army's only professional association - AUSA. 8

Chapter President Harold Tucker attended the Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist Universities Dining out on 20 April where the Professor of Military Science, LTC Oehler, described the progress achieved during her two years as the PMS. President Tucker spoke with multiple ROTC cadets, some soon to graduate and others new to ROTC, about what it means to be an officer; to be responsible not just for equipment, but for the lives and well-being of the Soldiers who will serve under them. He sought to impress upon them the role of the NCO and importance of listening to and learning from their Noncommissioned Officers.

JCLC – The largest and most significant occasion for AUSA-AR to support JROTC in Arkansas is the annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge. This year this 5-day event was held from 17-21 June at Camp Robinson, North Little Rock, AR. Roughly 250 cadets from the 20+ JROTC programs across Arkansas participated. After practicing all week, cadet units participated on 20 June in the jodie/chant challenge competition. Afterwards the winner of the competition was awarded ice cream treats provided by AARP – Arkansas, one of our newest AUSA community partners. The AARP staff also participated in the judging and really enjoyed the event. It was such a hot day that the cadets and cadre very much enjoyed the ice cream treats, too!

Each year the Arkansas Chapter also supports the JCLC by providing and presenting awards to the Top Male Cadet and Top Female Cadet for the entire encampment. This highly coveted award is based upon observations of cadet leadership – attitude, conduct, motivation, comradeship, and other leadership attributes – as the cadets rotate through various positions and duties in their assigned platoons. Again this year, these engraved plaques were generously donated by AUSA Community Partner, the Whole Hog Café of North Little Rock. COL(R) Tucker was on hand during the outdoor awards formation during the morning of the last day of the Challenge to make the formal presentations and congratulate the outstanding young winners on their accomplishment.

What is missing here? There are hundreds of businesses and companies across Arkansas who would love to support our Soldiers and Families, but don’t know how. AUSA-Arkansas is THE link they are looking for! We are the Voice of the Army Community in Arkansas and able to identify Reserve, Guard, ROTC, JROTC and Retiree and Veteran activities and events across our State that need support, and then coordinate the support of our Community Partners. But we cannot help them to help our Soldiers unless we can fill up the gaps on these pages by asking them to join us as new Community Partners!
