FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. What is an icon? An icon is a stylistic representation of Jesus or one of the saints. and God the Holy Spirit are never represented as human beings in an icon, although they may be pictured as one of the three who visited Abraham and predicted the birth of Isaac. are called “windows to heaven” because they convey theological information and help the viewer feel closer to the person depicted. 2. Why do icons look so strange? The first icon is said to have been “written” by St. Luke on the tabletop that Jesus and Mary used. Today’s iconographers use the same ancient styles. The use of true perspective in art didn’t take place until around the time of the Renaissance, so the perspective in icons looks off to us. Colors and symbols are used to communicate theological beliefs about the subject of the icons. The strange lettering is the name of the saint depicted. Jesus is always portrayed with a halo that has a cross shape included and the Greek words for “.” (Exodus 3:14) 3. But, I’m Roman Catholic; why would I want to paint an icon? Icons are primarily used in the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches (who are in full communion with us) and in the Eastern Orthodox Churches (whose sacraments we recognize although they are not in full communion with us). However, here at St. Mary’s we have several icons. The most prominent is Our Lady of Perpetual Help on the altar in the narthex and in the adoration chapel. The icons of Our Lady of Częstochowa and Jesus Christ Pantocrator are also located in the narthex. 4. What do you do with icons? Icons serve the same purpose as statues. We do not worship statues, but statues remind us of the person they show. Icons also serve to remind us of the person depicted. In Eastern rite churches, you will see people bowing to icons and even kissing them, but this is the same as when we Roman rite Catholics kneel before a statue. In neither case is the person worshipping an idol; the person is using the statue or icon as a visual reminder of the saint or Jesus Christwho became incarnate to save us. VOCATIONS CORNER DON’T STOP BEING YOURSELF When I think back to the time just before I entered the seminary, I remember that lots of people were giving me advice. Much of it was good and helpful, but there is only one piece of advice thatI received at that time thatI still remember today. One of our seminarians gave me this simple encouragement:"Don't stop being yourself". Even though this might seem insignificant, it would be hard for me to overstate how important this piece of advice was for me asI started my journey into the seminary. At that point,I was nervous thatI did not have what it would take to be a good seminarian. I was not sure if I was smart enough, holy enough, or wellVformedenough to fit in at a seminary and make it through the training process. However, that simple bit of advice thatI received from a fellow seminarian reminded me of God's plan for me. God had calledmeto be a priest. Hehadn't called me acting like someone else to be a priest; He calledme. In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus tells us that He is the vine and we are the branches. He also tells us that He wants to prune us so that we can bear more fruit. It is so important for all of us to realize in our lives that Jesus has called every one of us to a certain mission. He has given us specific gifts, graces, and talents that we need to fulfill the special role that He has for us. He does not need us to act like someone we are not, but He does want to make us the best version of ourselves. This is why it is so important for us to continue to go to Jesus to allow Him to prune us and prepare us for our missions. It isnecessary that we go to Him constantly in prayer and the sacraments so that He can continue to purify and sanctify us in order that we might bear much fruit. My advice to you, then, is to simply be yourself. Never be afraid to let Jesus in to prune you and shape you so that you will be the person He is calling you to be and so that you will be able to fulfill the mission that He has foryou. V Fr. Bobby Gonnella
