Jake….. My article for this week's bulletin will be submitted before the results of the Tuesday's election. Regardless of the results, we all need to pray that our newly elected or reelected leaders will work to address the problems and concerns that afflict our country. These difficult days require all people to work together. The prayer that Bishop Zinkula offered in his letter to all people in the diocese last week is one that all of us can continue to pray as we move into the future: Gracious and loving God, let your spirit be with us. Hear our prayers and increase in us the will to follow your Son Jesus. Help us to draw on the resources of our faith as we use the opportunities of our democracy to shape a society more respectful of the life, dignity and rights of the human person, especially the poor and vulnerable. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. If you missed the Bishop's full letter, it can be found on our parish website, www.olvjfk.com. This coming week our country will honor veterans and their sacrifice through the annual observance of Veteran's Day. Our country still finds members of our military in harm's way, so the sacrifice of veterans continues to happen in our contemporary age. As a people of God, we need to pray for the end of all war and conflict. However, until peace reigns in this world, November 11th continues to be an opportunity to honor those who have served and continue to serve in defense of our country. As I have mentioned in the past, we also need to acknowledge the sacrifice made by military families. When a person joins the military, his or his family also joins the military. I know that my parents definitely did not fully understand my commitment to the Army until I was almost two years into my military service when I received a notice that I could be deployed. No deployment happened, but this notice was the moment when my family had to talk through many of the aspects of my decision to join the military. Other military families struggle because they do not see or experience many of the events that military members go through in their careers. Furthermore, many of things that military members do cannot be shared with family members for any number of reasons. November 11th is also a good opportunity to thank military families for their service and sacrifice as well, because they are truly essential to supporting military members. May God bless our veterans and their families for this service and sacrifice to our country! I want to end by thanking everyone who has already pledged to Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA). As of this week, 307 OLV families have pledged $132,436. We are making great progress towards our goal of $145,000. If you have not returned a pledge envelope as of yet, it can either go in the offertory box, or you can mail the pledge envelope directly to the diocese or the parish office. The diocesan website, www.davenportdiocese.org, also has the link to a website if you would like to give electronically to this campaign. Every donation helps, so thank you very much for your support of our parish as we move towards fulfilling our ADA goal. Our Lady of Victory, pray for our country!
