Province Life | 5 Notes from Meritage By Murray Siegel

Unlike most summers, activity at the Province Sales Center has been “crazy busy” according to Michelle Jessee, Meritage Director of Sales for Tucson and Active Adult Communities. This is a result of a serious lack of inventory of homes for sale in the Phoenix metro area. Motivated by this lack of inventory, Meritage has begun its “Live Now” program which streamlines the process of purchasing a new home, with no visits to a design center required. This program has been successful at Mission Royale, Meritage’s active adult community in Casa Grande, and they are now pre-selling Live Now homes in Province Parcel 8 (located at the top of Friendly Place). The plan is to construct 15 new homes starting next month. It is interesting to note that the demand for new homes has caused conflicts between builders over the contractors who will be performing the framing of new homes. Some builders are offering increased payments to framers if they will switch builders. Fortunately, Meritage has developed strong relationships with contractors, which enables plans for home construction at Province to continue unimpeded. •

Music at the Pool Team Trivia Night

Province Life | 11 Trivia By Murray Siegel Little Darlin’

Starting in 1954, rock and roll music began coursing through our on radio stations coast-to-coast. Now, years later, there are some rock songs which have remained popular, and are played regularly on oldies stations. There are a few oldies which, when you hear the first few notes, you immediately recognize the song and begin to sing along. One such hit is “Little Darlin’”, written and recorded in early 1957 by Maurice Williams from Lancaster, SC and his group, the Gladiolas. But his version is not the one you know, since that was sung by the Diamonds, a Canadian group. As soon as you hear the “ah ya ya”, you begin to say, “My darlin', I need you to call my own and never do holiday parties n reunions n corporate events n weddings wrong. To hold in mine your little hand.” The Gladiolas’ original was released on low-budget Excello Records while the Diamonds’ cover was on Mercury, which could afford to market the record. Thus, you could only hear the original on Alan Freed’s radio show. The original four members of the Diamonds have all died, yet Williams is still around. The Gladiolas became the Zodiacs who had a big hit with “Stay”. “Little Darlin’” was ranked #3 for the year 1957 by Billboard. It was so popular that it was sung on NBC’s “Your Hit Parade”, which rarely performed rock songs. Do you recall, “I'll know too soon that all is so grand. Please hold my hand?” Sixty-two years later and the words have not been forgotten. •

Province Life | 23 INSIDE The Gates A Marvelous Libarian By Rob Baird

The Province Community is favored with a fine library and an equally fine librarian. Jean Kelley claims not to be a real librarian, but you will not prove it by the spectacular way she runs our library. Her belief in books is summed up by a quote she likes from Mark Twain, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.” Jean graduated from The University of West Florida, with majors in psychology/ child development and paralegal studies. She was a legal secretary and paralegal before retirement. Jean is married to her husband Tom, who retired from the Navy after 26 years. They have one daughter and a son-in-law and Jean dearly loves being the Jean Kelley grandmother of two. As the guardian of the Province active library with approximately 2,000 books, Jean maintains fresh books through a working relationship with the Maricopa Public Library. Since there is no comprehensive listing, or indexing of all books in the library, browsing is very popular with the residents. If Jean is in the library at the time a resident is there, she is happy to make recommendations on books to read. Books are found not only in the library itself, but popular romance novels are also in the TV area, along with many DVDs, Audio Books, and Jigsaw Puzzles. If Jean is not available, you may ask the desk about locations.

The checkout system is an honor system. Please try to return books within two to four weeks maximum. Place returned books in the small book rack or place them on the desk. No reshelving, please. Thank you, Jean, for your valuable contribution to the Province lifestyle. • 24 | Province Life OUTSIDE The Gates MUSD Bond Issue By Murray Siegel

The next election for residents of Province who are registered to vote in the City of Maricopa is this coming November. The item on the ballot will be a chance to approve, or disapprove, a $68 million bond for the Maricopa Unified School (MUSD). Two questions must be answered about this bond issue: why are the funds needed and how will this affect the homeowner’s tax bill? Maricopa is continuing to grow at a rapid rate and many of the new residents are families with school-age children. A demographic study predicts student enrollment will reach between 11,000 and 13,000 students over the next eight years. Currently, the district’s only high school is 500 students over capacity and that number will continue to grow. At the present time, MUSD is spending money on temporary classrooms (trailers) to provide more space, but that, in the long run, is more expensive and less efficient than building a new school. Why the need to borrow the money? Historically, the district received capital funding and facility funding based on state formulas. Since 2009, the state has not adhered to its funding formula and has begun to significantly reduce or eliminate state funding. Over the last ten years, the district has received approximately $19.1 million less than expected from the state due to the reduction in District Additional Assistance (DAA) funds. What projects will be funded by the bond issue: • Repair and replacement of systems and infrastructure like HVAC, roofing, and weatherization of aging buildings and facilities • Construction and land for an additional high school • Additional school buses to transport the growing number of expected students • Facility enhancements to increase security and promote safety If the bond issue passes, how will a homeowner’s tax bill be affected? If voters approve the bond, the estimated additional cost to a homeowner based on a home with a net assessed valuation of $100,000 is $121.84 annually. However, if the city continues to grow as projected, the tax burden would likely be spread out among more homeowners, therefore decreasing the impact. • Province Life | 25 20924 N John Wayne Parkway (520) 759-BARK (2275) 2 full time groomers on staff.
