SEPTEMBER 2016 VOL. 63, NO. 7 CHAIR’s MESSAGE

The IEEE Long Island Section has been one of the most active and successful Sections in the region. Our Section was once again recognized highly at the IEEE Region 1 Board of Governors’ meeting on August 6, 2016 in Mystic, Connecticut. Santo Mazzola and I attended the day-long meeting and presented our Section activities. It is with great pleasure to inform you that four distinguished Members of our Section have been selected for the 2016 Region 1 Awards. I would also like to mention that our Section is one of the leading Sections in receiving awards. Thanks to the Awards Committee for their sincere service. Please join me to congratulate the award recipients: Sai Padmanabhan, Debra Demou, Theodore Koutsoudis and Lawrence S. Hausman.

Our Section gave a special citation to Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe at the Annual Banquet held in March. Tesla Science Center organized a great event to celebrate ’s 160th birthday on July 10, 2016. They invited our Section to join the event. A couple of Members from our Section attended the ceremony. Jesse Taub, Davor Dokonal and I gave talks and presented the plaque to Tesla Science Center. Our participation was highly appreciated by the Center as well as the audience.

It is time to start the election process for the 2017 Section Officers. The officer positions are as follows: Chair First Vice Chair Second Vice Chair Treasurer Secretary

If you are interested or know anybody who is interested and capable, please contact the nominating committee listed below. John Vodopia (Chair) and John Schmidt (Member)

The Section is going to organize technical meetings, workshops, and conferences in next couple of months. Hope you would get involved in these activities.

Looking forward to hearing from you with comments and suggestions.

PULSE SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 7 LONG ISLAND’s ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC HISTORY

Long Island’s Electrical and Electronic History Tesla’s 160th Birthday By Jesse Taub, IEEE Long Island Section Historian

On July 10th several members of our Section participated in the Tesla 160th Birthday celebration at the site of his Wardenclyffe laboratory in Shoreham. This event was organized by the Tesla Science Center (TSC) which will be constructed at that site. Some of you may recall that our Section gave them a Special Citation at our recent Awards Banquet. We have and will continue to support them to realize their goal as a place where young people can be exposed to scientific discoveries and to encourage innovation.

Prior to the formal ceremony, there were displays of replicas of some of his inventions. Several owners of Tesla electric cars were showing them to attendees. Our Section was given a time slot on the event program where some of our members spoke about their appreciation of Tesla’s inventions. Our Section Chair, Nazrul Islam, told the audience about the IEEE and why we were happy to support the TSC. Nazrul and I presented the following citation again:

“The IEEE Long Island Section commends the Tesla Science Center for its determination to stimulate innovation and so honor the prolific inventor, Nikola Tesla, through the creation of a world-class science technology, and engineering educational facility and museum, and featuring the historic Wardenclyffe laboratory of the famed inventor as its centerpiece.”

The other talks were given by: • Jesse Taub, who described Tesla’s 1888 AIEE classic paper on the induction motor and papers and patents can teach young electrical engineers.

• Erich Forsyth, a retired Brookhaven National Laboratory engineer, talked about a superconducting power line that he developed that was based, in part on a Tesla patent.

• Milutin Stanacevic, an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at SUNY Stony Brook, described how he was inspired by Tesla while growing up in Serbia. He shares some of Tesla’s ideas with his students.

• Davor Dokonal, our Pulse Editor, reviewed some interesting aspects of Tesla’s life, and said that while Tesla was born in Croatia to a Serbian family and is celebrated as an American inventor, he was a “true citizen of the world”.

I plan to reprint the text of each of these talks in subsequent issues.

Acknowledgment: I would like to thank the members of our Section’s History Committee (many who were in attendance) for contributing to making this a successful event. They are Don Christiansen, Nick Golas, Mort Hans, Lou Luceri, Sandy Mazzola, Bill Wilkes and Vic Zourides.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE EDWARD P. MANGANO: NYC ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURER MOVING TO NEW HYDE PARK

County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) once again has attracted a New York City-based high-technology manufacturer to Nassau, bringing 128 new jobs to New Hyde Park. For more than 60 years, Keystone Electronics has been manufacturing precision electronic interconnect components and hardware that are engineered specifically for use by OEM designers and engineers who create and develop state-of-the-art electronic products, instruments and systems.

“Nassau County is no longer fighting the exodus of jobs, but rather, we are effectively competing and attracting employers back to our communities. My economic development team continues to attract employers to Nassau County where they enjoy success due to the skilled workforce, expanded housing opportunities, low crime rate and quality of life we offer.”

Keystone Electronics Corp., now located in Astoria, has been approved for an economic development compact that will allow it to relocate to a 48,759-square-foot building at 50 Denton Avenue and a 21,000-square-foot building at 2040 Jericho Turnpike, both in New Hyde Park. The compact was approved by the IDA board at its meeting on June 28th. Keystone, which plans to spend more than $8.2 million to purchase one building, lease the other and renovate both properties, considered relocating to New Jersey or the Carolinas. Renovations to the buildings are expected to generate 15 construction industry jobs. This relocation project is projected to have a positive economic impact of $653 million on the Nassau County economy and a net tax benefit to the county and other taxing jurisdictions of $1.4 million.

Keystone, currently located at 31-07 20th Road and 19-23 Steinway Street, both in Astoria, is one of several New York City-based businesses that have been solicited by the IDA and have relocated to Nassau County in recent years. Others include Supreme Screw, which moved from the Bronx to Plainview; Jesco Lighting Group, which moved from Queens to Port Washington, and Display Technologies, which relocated from Queens to Lake Success. The Nassau IDA also has attracted other businesses from New York City and other nearby area, including R Best Produce, which moved from the Bronx to Port Washington and Kin & Bae Trading, which relocated a warehouse from New Jersey to Port Washington.

About the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency The Nassau County Industrial Development Agency consists of a team of professionals whose mission is to promote the economic welfare and prosperity of Nassau County. It is a resource for businesses in Nassau County and those considering relocation. The IDA provides assistance to businesses interested in relocating, expanding and financing new investments.
