City of Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau ABOUT LAGUNA DANCE FESTIVAL

o, is this your first Laguna Dance Festival? Welcome and let me tell you who we are and where we came from. SArtistic Director Jodie Gates is a former with The , Frankfurt Ballet, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. When she retired, this California native chose to settle in Laguna Beach. Always active, she decided to start a dance festival, bringing to her new hometown, members of major international dance companies to perform in an intimate setting. This was in 2006. Since establishing Laguna Dance Festival, Jodie has presented members of Theatre, , Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Parsons Dance, CorbinDances, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Trey McIntyre Project, , Royal Ballet of Flanders, , Backhausdance, UCI Etude Ensemble, The Groovaloos, , Les Ballet Grandiva, BalletX, Sacramento Ballet, Breed, Ballet, ABT II and Hubbard Street 2 . There have been Master Classes for area dance students each year, as well as classes for small children. We have become regulars at First Thursdays ART WALK, too. Through an annual festival, both in a theatre and on Main Beach, Laguna Dance Festival has reached thousands, and exposed a new audience to world class professional dance in a beautiful setting. There are even more exciting plans for future years. We look forward to continuing here at Laguna Moulton Theater, our new venue, and presenting new companies for our audiences. Stay tuned. The staff of LDF is made up of an Operations Manager and Jodie, who volunteers all of her time to make the festival a success each year. There is a fully volunteer Board of Directors, handling most of the administrative and fund raising business, and a growing group of dedicated volunteers who man the actual festivals. Maybe you would like to join us? We’d be most happy to tell you how you can help make this happen. CaDance, aka Laguna Dance Festival, is a California-based non- profit 501 (c) (3) organization. All contributions are fully tax- deductible and most appreciated. Enjoy the Festival and we hope you will attend each year. Janet Eggers, Founding President and Advisory Board Member

Founded by the two former members in 1994, Complexions’ groundbreak- ing mix of methods, styles, cultures has created an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement over the past decade-and-a-half. The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing bound- aries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, pe- riod, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world—and all its constituent cultures—as an interrelated whole. It is Rhoden and Richardson’s unique career paths that have paved the way for them to re-define dance—as their multifaceted resumes will show, neither has ever been comfortable with his art being placed in a box. Instead, from E! to PBS to VH1, from Cirque de Soleil to the Joffrey Ballet, the two have allowed the transformative power of their art to flow freely throughout the entertainment world—their creative vision re- stricted by nothing but the limits of the human body itself. Together, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson have created in Complexions an institution that embodies its historical moment, a sanctuary where those passionate about dance can celebrate its past while simultaneously building its future. In the 15 years since its inception, the company has born witness to a world that is becoming more fluid, more changeable, and more culturally interconnected than ever before—in other words, a world that is becoming more and more like Complexions itself. en L Photo credit: Complexions Contemporary Ballet, by Dah WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY
