us to reach the numbers required by the hotel. A number of us have had some experience of this walking holiday in the past and can confirm that it is very enjoyable and of extraordinarily good value. If there is anybody who might be interested please contact me as soon as possible. It would be a shame if we lost this holiday due to lack of support. While membership numbers and numbers on walks are well up we do not seem to be getting as much support for our holidays. Our thoughts at this time must be with Ron and Brenda Dowdeswell and we hope that Brenda soon makes a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing them both out on our walks in the not too distant future. Finally no communication from me would be complete without an appeal for volunteers. An expanding programme and expanding group mean more work. If anybody feels they can help in any way please don’t be shy come forward and give us a John Geoghegan good-humouredly demonstrating how NOT hand. to carry walking poles when crossing a stile. The Start the Week Walks Start The Week Monday Walks are well under way with support coming not only from walkers at which it was aimed but also from established walkers who are attracted to an easy sociable walk on a Monday morning. Our walks coordinators and collectors are doing a magnificent job to put together such a large programme of walks. The Christmas Lunch at Minchinhampton Golf Club was once again a great success and we must thank Sally for organising the event and Pam and Ian for sponsoring us with the golf club and putting their membership and credibility at the club at risk. Members of our footpath sub-committee never cease to amaze me with the amount of work which they get through. I have sat in on a couple of their meetings in recent months and seen them in action, discussing the various problems which they Returning to Foston’s Ash last month receive, reporting on site visits and clearing overgrown and It is very pleasing to report that our experiment of blocked paths. Since October we have welcomed another 22 new members. We hope you enjoy belonging. We have already met several of you on Group walks and look forward to meeting some more of you.

Members sometimes ask me the size of our group and are amazed to discover we have over 430 members. It’s a good job you don’t all come on the same group walk! We do try and cater for varying lengths and grades of walk, with over 50 leaders active at the moment! Thank you to all our members for the support you give to the Ramblers Association. Richard and Mike are resuming their journey across the county on Sat 3 March from Bream. The 100 mile journey takes us to with an extension possible to the Malverns. In case you are interested and wish to reserve the The scene at Minchinhampton Golf Club for another very dates we plan to go on the first Saturday of March, May, July successful Christmas Lunch last December and September and the last Saturday of October this year and next! Website Help Richard and Mike are very pleased to report that Sally is now helping to prepare the photos and captions for display on our group website. With the advent of more walks being organised, we are getting even more photos, and even when Richard and Mike are not on a walk, another member often pops up with a camera and sends in a few photos for the web! Thank you everyone.

Where did we go? Now quite a number of us have SatNavs, we often get asked, where did we go today? Mike usually records the route so if you would like a copy of a route, please ask him to see if it’s possible. Also we encourage leaders to check the accuracy of their piece of string when measuring a walk. Please ask Mike to check the mileage on his computer map. Just ring and describe the explorer map route. Page 2 - www.southcotswoldramblers.org.uk BERNARD’S BEEN AT IT AGAIN! The Walker's Prayer Lord bless all walkers that we may live long and healthy lives; especially bless our leaders for they are all powerful and lead us through the wilderness. Yea though they lead us down the valleys and over the hills, we shall feel no pain for our hearts, minds and muscles are numb. Let them know their north from their south and their east from their west. Let the sun shine so that we may have a faint idea in which direction we are heading. Grant O Lord that they curb their tongues and not tell us that we have walked seven miles when we know that we have walked ten. Also let them know the difference between a gentle slope and a steep cliff. Give them the ability to count, so that they know the number of Bernard’s walk last May near Fromebridge Mill. Everyone was walkers, so that none shall go astray. forced to climb an obstructing high fence. Well done to Bernard Make them prevent the leaders from starting to walk the minute - he reported it, and in September, lo and behold a new stile! everyone has caught up. Curse those walkers who overtake the leader without approval; let their sticks break, and their laces come undone. Curse also those who disappear into the woods without telling the back marker. Grant, O Lord, sunshine at all times, but not too hot with cooling breezes, but not strong winds, shade when needed and incomparable views when we are resting. Spare us from brambles, nettles and other obstructions. Lead us not down the wrong paths. Finally Lord let us arrive back at our cars safe and sound for we are children of the wilderness, the blind being led by the blind, and we are shattered. Give us strength to turn up for the next walk, for we are of the tribe stupid and know no better. We ask all this with tongue in cheek, ever conscious that many a true word is spoken in jest. Anon

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT: We are now into the New Year and we still have an Area. Indeed You can get some help towards meeting another of the objectives, we can now look forward with some enthusiasm to the challenges, and obtain funds for your group, from Ramblers Holidays. They which face us, thanks to all those who stepped forward at the have established ‘The Walking Partnership’. Some of you may be AGM to fill the vacancies and to those who spoke up in support. aware of this arrangement and indeed, like South , some Also a big thank you to members who have taken on positions on groups may have already signed up to it. Briefly, if a group supports group committees, to ensure that this vital part of our operations walking in their area by organising group walks, encouraging people keeps going. to get walking, helping to clear footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers, or some other contribution to walking in your area, I have said it before but there is no job in our structure, which you may be eligible to join the Walking Partnership and receive needs to be too onerous or take up too much time. Difficulties arise a contribution every time one of your members books a holiday when one person is left covering for unfilled vacancies or taking with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays. Further information can be on too many positions because nobody else will volunteer. One of obtained from the website www.thewalkingpartnership.org.uk. our main objectives should now be to remedy these situations and If you want any help taking this forward please contact me. look to reach the next round of AGM’s with adequate cover in all positions and with volunteers coming forward to fill all vacancies. I hope my brief report has given you something to think about and that we are all able to work together to increase the influence and The coming year will see many changes in Ramblers with a new presence of Ramblers in the county over the next 12 months. CEO starting in February and a new chairman and treasurer for the BoT in April. However our main objectives remain as before, Richard Davis, Area Chairman to increase membership, reduce costs, obtain more charitable income and to protect and improve the path network. The last item is of course taking on increasing significance with the changes for Area AGM: 3rd December 2011 the PROW team at the County Council. Let’s hope that this date marks the beginning of the upturn for Gloucestershire Area and the Ramblers as a whole, after a period of declining membership. We are back from the brink and looking forward to a great future ! I’m back as Area Secretary – for one year. I volunteered because it seemed no-one really knew what the job was and hence they were not going to volunteer. The Area Secretary is the lynchpin of the Area so it is an important role and crucial to the health and wellbeing of the Area. Geoff Smithdale, Area Treasurer for 22 years, is back as Treasurer for one year also, but Sheila Constable, Footpath Secretary for Forest of Dean Group, has taken on the role of Assistant Treasurer in preparation to become Treasurer in December. So that’s the really good news – and bravo to them both ! Coming back to Area Secretary, I should welcome expressions of interest from anyone who thinks they might like to know more about the job. I’m here to help and provide the support which a new person will need. It is an interesting job and a great opportunity ! My email address is [email protected] – I look forward to receipt of your emails. Mavis Rear, Area Secretary

MID-GLOS: Walking The Gower Peninsula. Between 11th and 14th September, 24 members attended our Weekend Walking Spectacular in the Gower, staying at The Oxwich Bay Hotel, organised by Mike and Margaret, (fourth and fifth from the left) and our wonderful Chairman, Anne (eighth from the right). Walk leaders were Mike, Geoff and Des for the three days. Day one, Mike and Margaret led; the weather could have been a little bit kinder to us as it did blow up a bit! (see photos on our website). Day two was a vast improvement and Geoff led a terrific walk along the coast towards Rossilli. Steph and I led the walks on day three which was sunny and calm and the group enjoyed a figure-of-eight day out in the Rossilli Beach area. Shorter, more leisurely walks were led by Anne on days one and two which were much appreciated. Christmas Dinner: The group joined with the Cotswold Club to host Cirencester Group on a Christmas themed walk a very successful event at the Brickhampton Court Golf Complex. Many thanks to Vivien for her efforts on the group’s behalf.

GWG: This year the GWG has managed to schedule walks on 25th Anniversary AGM: Sunday 6th November saw us celebrating most Sundays, as well as Thursday evenings during the summer 25 years of The Mid Glos Group. On the social side, Des Smyth, Chairman we continue to thrive, with activities including ceilidhs, pub quizzes and canoeing. Our AGM in November saw some new members voted onto the committee, enabling Catherine and Rodney to step down as Chair and Treasurer – many thanks to them both for their hard work for the group over the years. Our Christmas meal this year was, as usual, very well-attended and a chance for our members to change out of walking boots and into their glad-rags – thanks to Andy for organising. Thanks go to Catherine for organising our now-traditional New Year weekend, this time in Bath, where we saw in 2012 with Greek food, fireworks and some of the muddiest walks we can remember ! We look forward to another packed programme in 2012 and welcome suggestions for future activities – contact us via www.gwg.org.uk. Geoff Cochran, Chairman Mid-Glos Group at Rossilli

Not a problem for the fit and agile but for many older people who love to walk in the country it could be journey’s end. If you find one like this – or more in need of some tender loving care – what do you do about it? You could climb over and leave it for someone else to report it but as a Rambler, please do your bit and report it to one or more of the following: your Group Secretary, RA Central Office (www.ramblers.org.uk) and send either an email or fill in the footpath report form) and / or report by letter or email to Public Rights of Way Dept, Shire Hall, Gloucester. Please give as precise a location as you can, ideally a grid reference and better still, email a photograph of the problem to Shire Hall. Unreported problems do not get solved. Please be vigilant. Don’t leave it someone else. Report it ! Mavis Rear, Area Secretary

WALK OFFERS NEEDED FOR JULY TO OCTOBER Thank you leaders for the record-breaking 58 walks planned for this programme. Please ring Enid (01242 863283) Midweek, John G (01453 834141) Weekend and myself (Mike 01453 873625) STW (Start The Week) Short Walks and Evening Walks to offer your next date or dates no later than 30 April. Then please phone or send the details online if possible (see the Leaders’ Page) by 25 May or sooner. Thanks once again for your help. Mike, Walks Programme Coordinator. LITTLE BY LITTLE, STEP BY STEP Have you been walking with us for some time? Are you enjoying visiting new places in glorious Gloucestershire? Ever thought about taking the group on a walk that you know well? That’s how everyone started once upon a time. It’s good to have a large team of leaders and means any one person needn’t necessarily need to volunteer every time - although we wouldn’t refuse if there was room on the programme! There are simple guidelines on how to go about it on the Leaders’ Page on the website, or just ask Mike or Richard. Possibly get someone experienced to help you on the walkover. It’s good to have new people on each programme - this time we have three walks led by them! Please support them. Mike
