Via of Lehigh Valley | Annual Report 2016 2017 Annual Report | 111111 ViaWorks Small Group Employment is a great match for those interested in competitive employment, as it provides a chance to work while enhancing skills, natural supports and opportunities for employment in the community. Job coaches provide supervision and mentoring.

Meet Zach Zach performs the same tasks expected of Cigars International’s employees—advanced skills that require high levels of dexterity and professionalism, like performing quality checks, skid wrapping, and product counting.

I like to work at Cigars because of the people. They are nice, and they like me. I like the staff too. I love working because it makes me feel “ pretty good about myself. I am able to help people, which also makes me feel good. I love paychecks because I can make money and spend it on clothes, pizza, and Arby’s. One of the hard things I do here is packaging cigars. My coach helps me a lot by cheering me on to do good.”

2017 Annual Report | 17 Community Connections

Building relationships between people & communities

Community Connections It is essential for people with disabilities to be part of the communities in which they live. Via helps individuals gain access to different recreational, volunteer and educational opportunities —and helps them learn how to access them independently. Individuals explore interests and preferences while working on communication, socialization and vocational skills. Community Connections supports adults at all different stages of their lives, from recent high school graduates transitioning into adulthood, to people of retirement age who want to stay active and continue to access the network of friends they’ve built over the years.

Behavioral Support Services Behavior challenges can prevent people from participating fully in community activities. Through Behavioral Support Services, Via helps individuals who struggle with behavior challenges to learn alternative methods of expressing themselves. Behavioral Specialists work with a person’s natural support system and caregivers to develop a behavioral support plan, addressing: challenging behaviors, cognitive processing, communication skills, self-help activities, impulse control, adaptive skills, and environmental changes that support success.

18 | Via of Lehigh Valley | #ViaSuccess Autism Services Focusing on career exploration and life skills development, Via Autism Services help people participate in activities of their choice, planning their schedules and developing goals and objectives.

Job skills are honed through volunteer activities, and Via partners with local employers to provide: job shadowing and site visits, mock interviews, resume preparation, money management, and accessing transportation.

Creative Expressions Supporting growth through artistic self- expression, individuals engage their local community through visits to artist studios, museums, galleries, schools and cultural events.

Art projects, wellness, culinary skills, working to achieve independence and improve self-awareness are a part of the daily curriculum.

Providing support and services for children and adults with disabilities is obviously very complex and challenging, but it is a real necessity. Over the last seven years serving on the Via Board, I have developed a true appreciation regarding Via’s overall professionalism and effectiveness, “and I have been impressed by its reliable measurements in meeting its very human goals. As a retired executive, I have found it very rewarding to support Via of the Lehigh Valley, both financially and as a Board member.

Anyone in the Valley who is looking for an organization to support, need look no further.”

John Diamant, Via Board Member
