00 Fall Init Pgs 130 DIVISION I Volleyball DIVISION I 2000 Championship Highlights On a Mission: Nebraska volleyball’s 2000 campaign can be summarized by a Chinese char- acter displayed on the players’ practice jerseys. “It’s the Chinese symbol for synergy. It means ‘a coming together of the forces,’” Nebraska mid- dle blocker Jenny Kropp said. Nebraska stayed true to that theme and its goal of winning the championship crown for the sec- ond time in program history. The Cornhuskers joined forces to defeat a tenacious Wisconsin squad 15-9, 9-15, 7-15, 15-2, 15-9, December 16 in Richmond, Virginia. The championship match seesawed between the two teams and their different styles of play. Nebraska’s size at the net was countered by Wisconsin’s athleticism and the result was a five-game battle. In the end, Nebraska’s Amber Holmquist and Laura Pilakowski connected on Greichaly Cepero’s sets to overwhelm the Badgers and take the title. The Huskers finished 34-0 and are only the second championship team to finish with an unblem- ished record. Photo by Todd Spencer/NCAA Photos Laura Pilakowski (9) and the Husker offense All-Tournament Team: Greichaly Cepero was named the most outstanding player of the tourna- powered their way to the national champi- ment and was joined on the all-tournament team by fellow Huskers Laura Pilakowski and Amber onship title. Holmquist. Wisconsin’s Sherisa Livingston and Lizzy Fitgerald were also named, along with Hawaii’s Lily Kahumoku. TOURNAMENT PERCENTAGE LEADERS Player, Team K E TA *Pct. All student-athletes are trained and closely monitored throughout the year by head strength coach Mike Nagler in the Ed Carroll Strength and Conditioning Center, a 4,700 square-foot facility, containing top of the line Hammer Strength and Power Life Equipment. The facility holds 12 power racks and nine Olympic lifting platforms. Student-athletes train with 4,000 pounds of free weight, two complete dumbbell sets and four glute-hamstring machines. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING At UC Irvine, the physical well-being of the Anteater student-athletes is corrected, maintained and improved within the UCI Sports Medicine Department, a unique collaboration between the athletics training staff, physicians, and strength and conditioning specialists. The Sports Medicine Center is housed in the Carlos A. Prietto Sports Medicine Center. Director Jim Pluemer’s staff includes NATA-certified athletic trainers Mike Burns, Jason Polhamus, Carey Balderrama, Bill Dent, Jose Sanchez, Karen Zieger and Colleen Duff and is complimented by certified athletic trainer interns and student trainers.
