There were approximately 35 visitors/District employees in attendance.

1. CALL TO ORDER OF PUBLIC MEETING – CLOSED SESSION IMMEDIATELY CONVENED

President Seibert called the Public Session of the Board of Education to order at 4:03 p.m. and immediately adjourned to Closed Session pursuant to Government Code Sections 54957, 54957.1 and 54957.6 and Education Code Sections 35146, 48900, and 48918.

2. RECONVENE PUBLIC SESSION/CALL TO ORDER REGULAR MEETING – 3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, OPENING, AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF VISITORS AND MEDIA

President Seibert adjourned the Closed Session at 7:00 p.m., and he reconvened the Regular Meeting by calling the Public Session to order at 7:07 p.m. President Seibert welcomed the visitors and he asked Trustee Janzen to lead the flag salute. President Seibert asked Pastor Randy Brannon of Grace Community Church to lead the invocation. President Seibert explained the rules governing the Board meeting. The meeting was recorded on Tape No. 11–2007/08.

President Seibert announced that it was decided in Closed Session to Advertise the Superintendent's position "in-house" starting on January 30, 2008 and running through February 5, 2008, with interviews to be conducted on February 11, 2008.

5. ADOPTION OF AGENDA – MOTION NO. 71–2007/08

President Seibert stated that if the Board and/or Administration determined they wished to add to the Agenda under Miscellaneous Items, this would be the appropriate time.

Superintendent Risinger asked that we move Item 11B - Standards Report to be presented after Agenda Item 8B1.

It was moved by Trustee Janzen, seconded by Clerk/Trustee Westley, and unanimously carried to adopt the revised Agenda.

6. STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVES REPORT

Neddy Lopez, Madera High School Student Board Representative, was absent due to a soccer game. Courtney Norton of Madera South School gave an update of academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities taking place at MHS.

Rosa Regalado, Madera South High School Student Board Representative, gave an update of academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities taking place at MSHS.

7. COMMUNICATIONS

7A. PUBLIC HEARING

President Seibert opened the meeting for visitors to speak on a subject not on the Board Agenda.

Rosemary Rodefer, 509 Williams, Madera, California addressed the Board regarding a meeting that was held on January 25, 2008 with Kelly Porterfield, Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations to discuss the condition of the Complex at Madera High School. Also in attendance at this meeting were Trustee Adams, Trustee Beckett, Rosalind Cox, Director of Facilities Planning and Construction Management, and Madera High School Softball Coach Judy Staubach. She presented a list of concerns, questions and answers to the Board to review

Ms. Rodefer also invited the Board to attend "Celebrating 30 Years of Pride and Tradition", Meet the 2008 Coyotes and Enjoy Dinner, Dancing, Silent Auction and Door Prizes on Saturday, February 16, 2008 to be held at the MHS Gym.

Sheila Bess, 1539 Hillsborough Avenue, Madera, California addressed the Board regarding a book that her daughter, who attends Thomas Jefferson Middle School, had checked out from the TJ Library. Ms. Bess indicated that the book has x-rated language content in it. A copy was made of one of the pages in the book that was offensive, and it was given to Mr. Carrasco, Principal at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. He will follow up on this concern.

7B. STUDENT AND STAFF RECOGNITION THOMAS JEFFERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PRESENTING SPEECHES GIVEN AT MARTIN LUTEHR KING, JR. CELEBRATION HELD ON JANUARY 20, 2008

Four students from Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Momna Khalil, Azka Fayyaz, Quasim Muhammad and Rida Qaiser were recently selected to speak during the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration held on January 20th at the MLK Middle School Library. The four students were recognized during the meeting, and each presented their speech to the Board. All four students were honored by Dr. Sally Frazier, Superintendent, Madera County Office of Education.

This item was presented after Agenda Item 8B1 Administrators and teachers from Madera South High School/School of Business and Human Services described their career school for the Board.

Vice Principal Jay Fowler, along with teachers Marilou Savant, Karen Lang, Davene Munoz, Robyn Cosgrove, Sarah Ferrer and Josh Shapiro were in attendance to present the career school, its pathways and prospects for the near future.

Many aspects of the career school, Madera South High School's largest, were discussed. Much of the presentation centered around the possibility of a new facility being constructed on campus, the creation of a professional learning community and the importance business partners play to the school.

13. MISCELLANEOUS

Trustee Beckett reported that he attended a Learning From Each Other Conference presented by Carol Gray regarding "Friendship, Bullying, and People with Autism Spectrum Disorders". Trustee Beckett stated that it was a very good conference, and gave each person present insight into resolving bullying. Trustee Beckett asked Jennifer Gaviola, Director, Special Services to speak a little bit about what she received from this conference. Ms. Gaviola stated that the conference focused mainly on autistic students and how they move through this world. She also stated that the conference gave great insight on how teachers, peers, and others make a huge difference on how these children succeed in school. Ms. Gaviola was also very proud to report that MUSD was the only group that had a full team in attendance at this event. PIO, Jake Bragonier, Associate Superintendent Kathleen Lopes, CAO John Stafford, two psychologists, Ms. Gaviola and Trustee Beckett represented MUSD. The biggest thing that Ms. Gaviola said that she came away from the conference with is that we are committed to all kids to have a safe environment at school.

Trustee Goodwin indicated that this is also a big issue for her as a Trustee, even though she had not been in attendance at this event. She suggest that we might be able to put up Student Survey boxes at the school sites, allowing students to 8

th REGULAR BOARD MEETING HELD ON THE 29 DAY OF January, 2008 anonymously give information to the administration on students that were misbehaving, without feeling that they will receive retaliation. It might be useful to improve behavior on campus.

Trustee Adams suggested that it is very important that the Principals at the school sights review every referral for bullying, and that there would be follow up, and also that Board Policy that is set in place regarding bullying be followed in every situation.

Trustee Adams inquired about an update on the Freshman Academy Program. Superintendent Risinger stated that it would be presented at the next Board Meeting. Trustee Adams also asked that resolution be brought forward for the 3 presentations we had regarding the use of Dogs on Campus for Drug Prevention.
