CARVING NICHE: Shane Howell (right) and Bobby Te Huia with the magnificent pataka they helped carve at Te Wananga o Aotearoa. 104057AD Two of the original carving students at Te Awamutu Wanango o Aotearoa in the mid 1980s, Bobby Te Huia and Shane Howell, recently be- came the fi rst students in New Zealand to gain their Bachelor of Maori Arts. They say when they started the arts and crafts course at the Wananga, carving was generally seen as a hobby. “But thanks to Rongo (Wetere) and the Wa- nanga system, carving is now widely recognised as one of the fi ne arts,” they say. They hope their success inspires other carvers. The pair have joined an elite group of recog- nised authentic Maori artists - Toi Iho. They are also part of a group of graduates from this region who have got together for the past three Easters (Te Whare Powerewere), taking courses at marae and schools to help revive the carving tradition and exchange ideas. The pair were part of a team which recently constructed a pataka (store house), built over six months using traditional methods - which uses no nails and instead has wooden wedges and rope binding holding it together. The pataka was carved from kauri, mostly from Kaitaia.

The Commissioner agreed, saying he found the Alpha application left in some doubt whether the choice of the site was a “choice of compulsion or choice of convenience”. He found the Alpha proposal did not meet the ob- jectives and policies regarding prime agricultural land and was contrary the District Plan. Council planning manager Wayne Allan agreed. “The Waikato Regional Airport Authority must promote airport related industrial activities such as the kind proposed by Alpha Aviation within the context of an Airport Industrial zone. “It is encouraging that the Airport Authority is working on a private plan change application to address the future requirements for industrial airport land within properly zoned areas. “Waipa District Council is fully supportive of development at the Airport in a structured and well-managed way. “Council staff will work with the Airport Authority, airport industries and affected residents to ensure that industrial airport growth strategies are undertaken on an integrated and sustainable basis having regard to infrastructural upgrade requirements and surrounding land uses.” Alpha Aviation has until May 12 to appeal the decision to the Environment Court.
