THE DECADE ART DECO IN THE SOUTHERN CAPITAL June 25-27th, 2021

www.bespoketravelcompany.com 1 [email protected] ABOUT THIS TRIP

You might think of Nanjing as just another huge megalopolis (it’s OK, we did too). But thanks to our friends at Historic – with whom we’re running this trip – we’ve come to realize this is perhaps the most architecturally underrated city in all . And if you join us on this trip, we just know we’ll make converts of you too.

In 1927 President Chiang Kai-shek moved China’s capital from to Nanjing, away from the northern warlords that had dominated the country’s politics over the previous decades. He brought with him the best architects and urban planners – both Chinese and Western – with the aim of transforming the city into a capital befitting what he hoped would become a 20th century superpower.

Architects like Henry K Murphy, Poy Gum Lee and Yang Baoting helped design huge new civic structures, like the Presidential Palace and the grandiose Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, both of which we’ll see on this trip. Their stunning designs combined both international and local elements, and the unique resulting style become known as ‘Chinese Art Deco’.

Over this weekend, we’ll trace the history of the ‘Nanjing Decade’ through visits to fabulous old cinemas, universities and neighbourhoods that were built in this style, as well as other surprises like Soong Mei Ling’s sumptuous former ‘palace’ and the Linggu Pagoda, where a traditional Chinese exterior gives way to a stunning modernist interior.

The tour will be guided by Historic Shanghai founder members Tina Kanagaratnam and Patrick Cranley, leading experts on 1920s and 30s China. In addition to designing and leading countless historic walks over the years, they organized the first ever Art Deco World Congress to be held in Asia, in Shanghai in 2015. You are in the very best historical hands possible here, we assure you!

Sunday, June 27th After breakfast we take on the formidable Purple Mountain, home to some of Nanjing’s best sights. We kick off with the epic Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, designed by Lu Yanzhi and Chinese American Poy Gum Lee, and the adjacent art deco music stage, slightly reminiscent of the Hollywood Bowl. We’ll also visit the Mei Ling Palace, a 1931 villa in a gorgeous Chinese Art Deco style that President Chiang is said to have built especially for his wife. Built in the early 1930s, the Linggu Pagoda has a traditional Chinese look on approach, but the interior features a bold modernist style that could only have come from this period. Those willing to climb the nine floors will be rewarded with sweeping views back across the forested slopes of Purple Mountain.
