Wild Rose Public School October 2016

Principal’s Message:

This week saw us host our second Run in the Wild Cross Country Race. As the school grounds filled with smiling young faces and happy staff and parents the phrase “what a beautiful school” was heard more than a few times. With all the positive vibes being felt a quick look around reminded me why we are so lucky to call Wild Rose our own. A handful of School Community Council members had been with us since earlier in the morning, preparing to provide a canteen with affordable treats for the runners, student volunteers from Wild Rose were scattered around the course and yard helping out and staff and students were on hand to cheer on our Warrior runners, not to mention those from other schools. All this took place in a setting of fall with leaves changing color and green grass surrounded by (thankfully) harvested fields of stubble.

We consider ourselves lucky not only because of our setting but more because of the people which make Wild Rose special, the culture of our school is one of high expectations both academically and behaviorally. This is something we do not take for granted and know that it needs fostering and attention so that students in our school can continue to carry forward this strong tradition. The students of the school will soon become very familiar with what the staff has termed the “WARRIOR Code” which outlines the expectations we have of all students and staff at Wild Rose. The WARRIOR Code is already being used as a talking point with students over both positive and negative behaviors and in time it will be supported by rewards and celebrations.

School startup also brings about the most important event in our calendar as we prepare for and celebrate the Walkthon; which serves as our sole fundraiser throughout the year at Wild Rose. The Walkathon continues to provide students of Wild Rose with opportunities to develop a range of literacies in and out of the building. Experiences out of the building vary from physical (teams, swimming, skiing/snowboarding, etc.) to the arts (live theatre, dance) and fully supports our year end trips for all grades. Within the building the Walkathon supports student learning with supports of student learning such as the sound system in the gym and also the 3-4 classroom last year. This year we will continue to expose students to new and unique experiences such as the North Battleford Recreational Center and a presentation of the play “Elf” in Prince Albert later this fall. At the school we will continue to develop our outdoor classroom with the addition of garden boxes which will be ready for use in the spring. The Walkathon also helps us extend student experiences through new titles in our libraries and fund such rewards for student participation as the Summer Reading Program where

Summer Reading Challenge Winners 2016 students who completed the challenge this summer had a chance to visit a bookstore and pick out a book for themselves and the library.

We have decided to carry on the can/bottle donation program in conjunction with Walkathon due to its successful contribution of over $600 to the Walkathon last year. Students are encouraged to reach out to friends, family and neighbors in an effort to contribute to the total, a responsibility that cannot be overstated. In support of students going out and gathering pledges the staff of Wild Rose continue to offer incentives to the students as they bring money in for the cause. Incentives this year include mystery bags, ice cream treats and numerous opportunities to have a little fun at the staff members expense! Not the least of which will be yours truly taking a polar ice dip in Sturgeon Lake if the students can raise $10,000! The top money earners will have the best chance at winning our grand prizes of either a movie package, reading package, Raider flex pack or tickets to see the League Champion Rush play in !!!

That said, we are looking forward to another fantastic year of learning experiences at Wild Rose and know that with the continued support of our school community ensures a unique and enriched educational experience at Wild Rose.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Danielle Young back to our Gr. 3-4 room after a year off and also Mr. Kirk Pilon to our school in the Gr. 7-8 room. Their energy and creativity have already been contagious in the school and we know their contribution to the school will compliment that of our already strong staff. Also joining our bus driver fraternity is Mr. Joseph Raiter, welcome to Wild Rose Joseph!

Please have a great fall, stay safe during this busy time on the farm and we hope to see you all for pancake breakfast on October 14th.

Outdoor Classroom

We continue to develop our wonderful learning space outside the school walls in the form of our Outdoor Classroom. We have completed the addition of four permanently mounted picnic tables which were funded by an SRPSD grant, the SCC and Walkathon funds. At the same time we were able to add our Free Little Library which was donated by family of Mrs. Klaassen and will offer students and community members the ability to take and leave books year round any day of the week! Next up are our plans to develop the learning garden aspect of the plan. We have started to collect information on building the boxes but are still in need of a few items, if community members are able to help please contact the school. We are still hoping to find:

 Used water troughs, do not have to be in perfect condition as we will cover them with wooden boxes.  A large water tank for collection of rainwater.  Soil for the garden boxes.  Use of a skid steer or some equipment capable of doing some leveling in the area where the boxes would be placed. Kindergarten: Mrs. Klaassen

There are many exciting learning activities planned for kindergarten in the month of October! Please take a close look at the kindergarten monthly newsletter for information regarding harvest soup day (Oct. 5), special colour days, pumpkin explorations and orange and black day at the end of the month (Oct. 31). We have been showcasing our learning in kindergarten through Seesaw, our online portfolios. If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for your child’s account yet, I encourage you to do so as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on sharing the excitement of our classroom with your child! Just a reminder that there will be no kindergarten on Thursday, October 13th. We have switched our K day to October 14th so the students can join us in the Walk-a-thon. The kindergartens have 2 classroom incentives for the walk-a-thon. They will earn a Happy UN- Birthday Party once they reach their class goal of $700 and a PJ/stuffy day at $900. We would love for families to come out and join us on our walk and be sure to stop by for a delicious pancake breakfast on the morning of the 14th! I look forward to connecting with everyone during our parent night on October 27th and the students will be looking forward to showing off what they are learning at school!

Grade Three/Four: Ms. Young

Our class has been very busy this first month learning routines and getting to know one another. The grade 3/4 students are expected to read for 20 minutes each night and with a little math, choosing appropriate goals and working as a community they have decided to set a year goal to read 160,000 minute. Each Friday we add up everyone's minutes and subtract it from our goal, so far this year the students have already read 6,215 minutes! The students have also really enjoyed our home journals where they choose someone they will see that weekend and they write about what they learned that week, along with funny stories or questions. The students are very eager to read the letters Monday morning when they return them to school, it is great that all you wonderful parents support and take part in your child's learning.

We have also had a busy month of creating Cattail Dolls, Duck boats and leaf animals in our art class, the students have enjoyed using the environment around them to create great pieces of art. Looking into October the students will be working on independence and taking ownership and responsibility for their school work, reading logs and agendas. Please ensure that you are signing their agendas and reading logs nightly, these are great forms of communication and classroom goal setting.

Grade Five/Six: Mr. Basaraba

This month has been a whirlwind in the grade 5/6 classroom. Start up went very well and we are well underway and ready for October.

Our Science class has been an area of excitement studying the diversity of life. We have been learning how scientist classify and organize all living things on the planet. In Social Studies, we have been working through a chapter discussing how location and culture influence a person's identity as well as examining the history of West and Central Africa as well as . In ELA, we have been spending time reviewing the Daily 5 and CAFE strategies in the classroom and have been doing a unit on growing up by examining short stories and poems. In the grade 5/6 art class we are examining the pop art movement and experimenting with the different art forms. This year I also have the pleasure of teaching the grade 7/8 class Art. We are looking at social issues in society and how artists reflect this in their art. The grade 6 students in Career Ed. have begun looking at balanced decision making in regards to careers.

Some great news for the Walk-a-thon, our class has raised 711 dollars at the end of the first week. For an incentive the students need to make 1500 dollars in order to earn a pizza/pop/movie party for the class. I have also put forward as an incentive to the school that the top 15 will get a nacho bar for lunch one day. I am very excited for the rest of this year and I know that it will be the best one yet.

Grade Seven/Eight: Mr. Pilon

Is your child attending Wild Rose? Are they in grade 5/6 or grade 7/8? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, my name is Kirk Pilon and I may teach your child!

I am teaching grade 7 and 8 here at Wild Rose. I was born and raised in Prince Albert and am currently residing in the mighty metropolis of Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. Last year, I taught at TD Michel school in Big River. I am really looking to working here at Wild Rose and meeting all of you. I will be at the walkathon so make sure you stop by and say hello!

Our goal for the walkathon is a whopping $2000. If my determined students reach this goal, I will teach for a day in a T-Rex costume. Within the classroom, my students have an incentive that Mrs. Beaven helped to create- it's BINGO! When the students make a line, they will be able to teach 1 class of their choice. It won't be easy so make sure to help them out!

Math Corner: Miss Bompais

Welcome back to another great year at Wild Rose School! I am so excited this year to be teaching math again!!

Kindergarten Math – we have been focusing on counting as well as working with repeating patterns. We have done many fun activities with colouring patterns, singing and dancing using patterns, and beading. We have also been counting past ten, as well as we have learnt how to count to 5 in Cree!

Grade ½ Math – The students in grade one and two have been also working on repeating patterns, as well as increasing patterns. We have learnt how to create our own patterns, extend patterns already made for us, find the missing link in the pattern. We have also learnt about the core of a pattern, attributes and how to translate patterns to create the same pattern but using different a different object or shape. Skip counting has begun in the grade ½ classroom, and we are very excited to learn different ways to count objects!

Grade 4 – Patterns has also been the strand of focus in grade 4. We have completed an outcome that focuses on identifying and describing patterns within tables and charts, reproducing patterns that are in tables and charts, creating our own tables and charts, and solving problems that include patterns. We have learnt about the importance of pattern rules, and how patterns are common in our everyday lives. We have also begun working on finding the missing piece of an equation, using common arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Grade 5/6 – In grade 5/6 the pattern strand is the strand of focus currently. We began the year with looking at patterns that occur in charts and tables, and finding the pattern rules that go along with these tables. From there, we can now create expressions and equations using variables! Variables was a new and exciting topic in grade 5, and we are beginning to learn why and how we use these fancy letters in math!! We will continue working with variables, throughout this outcome, as well as many outcomes in the future!

Grade 7 – Divisibility rules and the exciting phenomenon that occur with division was the first outcome that the grade 7s completed this year. It was neat to learn about the different rules that can be followed, to find out if a large number can be divided by a number 2-9, without actually having to do the division. Ask your child about the different rules, as they are pretty nifty! We have moved on to looking at different patterns within charts and tables, and how to make equations using variables out of the pattern rules that follow in the charts. We are then going to begin to graph the findings, and look at the data to solve problems.

Library News: Mrs. Schutte

I would like to invite you into the library and see the new look, the students are loving the new comfy furniture to cuddle up in and read their books.

We are hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of October 24 to October 28, the fair will be open during interviews. Thank you for always supporting the Book Fair, which gives us the opportunity to purchase books that the students are asking for. Please stop by and see what the students are reading and what is new in children’s literature.

Story Time will begin on Tuesday, October 4 at 9:00 – 10:00. This is a time for our preschoolers to become familiar with the school and hear stories and songs that they will learn to love and get their little hands moving with crafts for them to do. Please let all our preschoolers know so that they can come and get to know children and the school as they prepare to become students at our wonderful little school. We end the hour with snacks the parents provide and the opportunity to sign our library books.
