Entering his fourth season as head coach of the Pioneers, Andreas Lindberg looks to continue to develop the men’s soccer team into an East Coast Conference and NCAA Championship cailber program. Lindberg led the 2012 Pioneers to one of the fi nest season head coach andreas lindberg in school history, as the team fi nished with a program-best 17-3-1 record and an NCAA Second Round appearance. Th e Pio- neers swept the ECC major awards as Lindberg was again named ECC Coach of the Year by his peers. Th e Pioneers were ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 for much of the season, as high as No. 3 in the nation at one point before fi nishing 12th in the fi nal rankings. Last season saw the Pioneers advance to the ECC Cham- pionships for the second year in a row, where they were elimi- nated by eventual champion Dowling in a 1-1 contest that was decided by penalty kicks. LIU Post fi nished 2010 with a 7-8-2 record. Lindberg had a standout fi rst season that included an ECC- Championship and a 12-5-2 record, along with an East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honor. 2009’s season’s success was a fi ve-win turnaround from the previous year, and saw the Pioneers advance to the champion- ship game in the ECC tournament, defeating Dowling College in penalty kicks to earn the championship title. Lindberg was named the 12th coach in program history in April 2009 after previously serving as head coach of the men’s soccer program at LIU-Southampton from 2002-05. Lindberg posted a cumulative 30-14-7 record during his three-year tenure at Southampton. He led the Colonials to the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2002 and was a runner-up in the ECAC tournament. Lindberg also assisted current LIU Post women’s head coach, Mark Dawson, with the Southampton women’s program in leading the Colonials to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division II Championships as well as an ECAC championship. In addition to his duties as LIU Post men’s soccer head coach, Lindberg is currently a head coach at the Met Oval De- velopmental Academy, a member of the USSF Developmental Academy. He has been a member of the staff since 2007 and is responsible for coaching and training top-level 15-18 year olds in the tri-state area and communicating with United States National Team scouts. Lindberg also serves as the head coach of the of the USL Professional Development League. He is certifi ed by the National Soccer Coaches Association of Ameri- ca (NSCAA) with an Advanced National Diploma, and has a US Soccer ‘B’ License, and also serves as the regional site director of the Farmingdale Future Stars Summer Camps, where he manages and supervises up to 1,200 kids weekly who participate in the camps. Lindberg graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Business from Southampton College in 2002, and received his MBA from LIU Post in 2004. He attended the University of Leeds in England for a year, before transferring to . While at Hofstra, Hulse served as team captain for three years, and graduated in 2004 with a degree in English and American Literature. Hulse’s most recent coaching experience includes stints at the Long Island United Academy, the New York Olympic Development Program, and the .

DAVID STAPLETON Assistant Coach • Fourth Season • Edinburg ‘99 David Stapleton, a native of Scotland, brings over 10 years of coaching experience to the staff . Stapleton graduated with a degree in Sports Studies from the Univer- sity of Edinburgh in 1999. He played collegiately for four years on the University men’s soccer First Team, and also played semi-professionally in the East of Scot- land Premier League. Stapleton currently holds his NSCAA Premier/USSF ‘B’ & NSCAA Na- tional Goalkeeping Coaching licenses, and has coached at the High School, Club & ODP levels for a number of years. Additionally, he is also a staff instructor for the LIJSL/NSCAA Coaching Academy, off ering licenses to local soccer coaches. Stapleton is a full-time director for Future Stars summer camps, and oversees year round summer camp operations on Long Island for various sports- specifi c weekly camp programs off ered in Old Westbury (Nassau) & Farmingdale (Suff olk). assistant coaches assistant DUSAN ERCEG Assistant Coach • Second Season • Southampton ‘00 Dusan Erceg, a former teammate of head coach Andreas Lindberg at South- ampton College, enters his second season as an assistant coach on Lindberg’s staff . Erceg anchored the defense while playing alongside Lindberg at the former LIU-Southampton College from 1997-2000. He led the Colonials to a #2 ranking in Division II, and was named an All –American in 1999. Following his collegiate career, he played for the of the Premier Development League, where he served as the team captain and helped the Flames to a league and national championship in 2001. Th e following year, he played for the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL Division 2, and helped the Rough Rid- ers to a national championship. Th e standout player then served as an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Knights in the PDL in 2006, as well as the Assistant Soccer Director at the Future Starts Camp in Farmingdale. Erceg and his wife, Paige, reside in Queens, N.Y. He joins the Pioneers after one season as an assistant coach at Farmingdale State College, his alma mater. Mendolia played four seasons at Farmingdale, earning All-Skyline honors as well as scholar-athlete accolades, and he also captained the Rams during his senior season. Mendolia has a wide range of coaching experience with the Stony Brook Soccer Club, coaching three diff erent teams as he earned the 2012 Coach of the Year title. He has also spent the past four years as the assistant soccer director for Future Stars summer camps. Mendolia received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management Technology from Farmingdale, and is currently attending LIU Post working towards a master’s degree in history. assistant coaches MARK DAWON Assistant Coach • Th ird Season • Southampton ‘95 Mark Dawson, currently in his third season as the head coach of the C.W. Post women’s soccer team, will also assist the men’s soccer staff . Dawson and Lindberg continue to join forces for a second go-round. Th e Mastic, N.Y. resident also served as an assistant coach with Lindberg’s Southampton’s men’s soccer program from 1996-2004, helping the Colonials to the “round of eight” in an NCAA Division II Championship tournament. Ending 2009 with a 12-6-1 record, Dawson’s sqaud earned its second consecutive ECC tournament berth under his guidance, falling just short of returning to the NCAA East Regional. During his debut season at the helm of the Pioneers, Dawson guided the Pioneers to their second consecutive East Coast Conference Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. With a record of 17-3-1, Dawson and the Pioneers tied the program record for wins, previously set during the 2007 sea- son. For his eff orts, Dawson was selected as the 2008 ECC Coach off the Year. Since 2004, Dawson has also coached in the Eastern New York Olympic Devel- opment Program (ODP) in the Under-12 to Under-19 age groups. Dawson serves as a physical education instructor in the William Floyd School District.

Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi- tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the LIU Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow. Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of LIU Post July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at LIU Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private liu post administration university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at LIU Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso- phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.” 2012 Men’s Soccer Media Guide 24 LIULIU POSTPOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2012 MEN’S SOCCER Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics Bryan Collins enters his seventh year as the Director of Athletics at LIU Post. Under Collins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels of athletic performance and academics.

Notable achievements during his tenure include 29 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 and 2012 women’s lacrosse teams and the 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s bas- ketball, women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and softball all participated in NCAA tournaments.

Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the instal-

lation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound system for the athletic administration stadium. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic fi elds have undergone improvements to their play- ing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff in 2009.

Collins’ biggest undertaking yet has been overseeing the Pioneer Spirit Campaign to raise funding for the brand new out- door stadium complete with brand new seatback bleachers, which will break ground following the 2012 football and fi eld hockey seasons and open in Fall 2013.

LIU Post boasts some of top-ranked programs in the country that frequently appear in national polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10: the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ ten- ure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. During the 2011-12 academic year, LIU Post student-athletes completed a department record 3,484 hours of service. He currently serves as the Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation – Long Island Kidney Walk.

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mis- sion statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, LIU Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program.

In 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orienta- tion seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete recognition dinner to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

In addition, Collins serves on the East Coast Conference Executive Committee and is also involved with the NCAA/ADA Mentoring Program. He currently serves on regional advisory committees for men’s lacrosse and baseball.

A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, persever- ance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.

Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (17) and daughter, Megan (12).
