Tony Bergeron enters his second season as an assistant coach on Matt McCall’s staff in 2020-21. Bergeron joined the Minuteman program after winning over 400 games coaching prep and high school basketball, most recently at Woodstock Academy (Conn.).

During his first year with the program in 2019-20, Bergeron helped guide the Minutemen to a three-win improvement from the prior campaign with a 14-17 overall record, including an 8-10 mark in league play to finish the year with their most conference wins since the 2014-15 season to earn the No. 8 seed in the A-10 Tournament, its highest seed since 2015. UMass was playing some of its best basketball of the season, with wins in four of its final six games of the regular season, until the Atlantic 10 Tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Led by freshman Tre Mitchell, who became the sixth player in team history and first since 2004 to be named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, UMass earned a first-round bye to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2016 and won 11 games at the Mullins Center. Prior to that, he led American Christian Academy (Pa.) and Wings Academy (N.Y.) to USA Today Top-25 rankings and helped The MacDuffie School to a NEPSAC Class E title. For nearly 15 years, Bergeron worked as a program director for the Five-Star Basketball Camp, a camp that has helped produce over 500 NBA and over 10,000 Division I players.

Bergeron graduated from The King’s College in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.

Lucious Jordan enters his second season as an assistant coach on Matt McCall’s staff in 2020-21, and fourth overall with the UMass basketball program. Jordan spent his first two seasons in Amherst as the director of operations before being promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2019-20 season.

Assistant Coach Jordan arrived at UMass after one year as the director of operations at his alma mater, Albany, in 2016-17. Prior to Fourth Season | Albany ’06 his time with the Great Danes, Jordan spent three seasons as an assistant coach nearby at Siena College, where he helped the Saints to a pair of CBI berths.

Before helping guide the Saints for three years, Jordan was the director of operations at James Madison University during the 2012-13 campaign. While working with the Dukes, Jordan oversaw team operations as James Madison won the CAA Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Jordan was formerly the coach of the Albany City Rocks AAU Team in 2010 and 2012 while he also guided the Green Tech Charter High School freshman team.

Jordan was a two-time co-captain of the Great Danes and key cog in the 2005-06 team’s success as Albany won the program’s first-ever America East Tourna- ment. The America East All-Conference selection finished his career that also spanned two seasons at Loyola (Md.) with 1,418 points. After graduating with a degree in communication and sociology, Jordan traveled overseas and competed in the Netherlands for the Emmen Eagles while he also laced up for the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association from 2006-09.

The Capital Region standout played scholastically at Colonie Central and was inducted into the Capital Region Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

As a collegiate player, Wheeler was a candidate for the John Wooden Award and was named the New England Coaches Association Bob Cousy Award winner.

After wrapping up his career at Rhode Island, Wheeler was drafted by the in the 1998 NBA Draft and played for the during the 1998-99 season. Wheeler also played professional in the CBA, the ABA and overseas from 1998-2008.

Brian Grossman enters his second season as the Director of Basketball Operations on Matt McCall’s staff, and fourth season with the program. Grossman spent his first two seasons as the Director of Video Operations before being pro- moted at the start of the 2019-20 season.

Grossman arrived at UMass prior to the 2017-18 season following two seasons as the graduate assistant at Arizona State from 2015-16, assisting the Sun Devils in numerous capacities while working closely with head coach Bobby Hurley and associate head coach Rashon Burno. He graduated with a Master’s Degree from Arizona State in May 2017.

Prior to heading to Tempe, Grossman earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. During his senior season, the 6-foot-2 guard helped the Bears win the 2014 MASCAC Championship and reach the NCAA Tournament.

Grossman is a native of Duxbury, Massachusetts, where he played scholastically at Duxbury High School. He holds Brian Grossman additional administrative experience as the director of operations for Zero Gravity Basketball in 2014-15, when he Director of Operations worked alongside Chief Executive Officer Greg Kristof. Jacob Kurtz enters his second season as the Director of Scouting/Video on Matt McCall’s staff, and fourth season with the program. Kurtz spent his first two seasons as the Assistant Director of Operations/Assistant to the Head Coach before being promoted at the start of the 2019-20 season.

Prior to arriving at UMass, Kurtz spent two seasons on McCall’s staff at Chattanooga as the Mocs’ video coordinator. While at Chattanooga, Kurtz was responsible for the breakdown of team video throughout the season. He filled the role of assistant to the head coach during both of McCall’s seasons leading the Mocs.

Kurtz’s tenure in Chattanooga marked his second stop with McCall as Kurtz was a student-athlete at Florida during McCall’s time with the team. After Kurtz started as a team manager in 2010-11, he was elevated to walk-on and eventually moved into a part-time starting role as a senior. He was named to the 2015 SEC Community Service Team.
