THE BENEFICE OF St BENEDICT The Parishes of Ashmanhaugh, Barton Turf, Beeston St Lawrence, , Irstead and Neatishead

Rector: The Rev’d David Smith 01692 630216 [email protected]

From your Parish Priest In drama, TV shows, and literature, a particular phrase has become almost ubiquitous whenever someone needs to answer a question but leave the hearer or reader to let their imagination run riot. “Where are you from? Where did you grow up?” “. . .It’s complicated!” “How are things with your new boyfriend?” “ . . .It’s complicated!” Teacher: “Why haven’t you done your homework?” “. . .It’s complicated!” Or even: “When did you stop going to church?” “It’s complicated!” “It’s complicated” has become a code for all sorts of things: “You really wouldn’t believe me even if I told you”. “Trust me – you don’t want all the gory details”. “I haven’t got a good excuse, so I’ll leave you to imagine one for me”. Our ancient ancestors, in the absence any other knowledge, understood their environment and universe in terms of basic entities; earth, air, fire, water. As we became more aware, and learned more of creation, our understanding became ever more complicated. Ask a physicist why the bath water runs away clockwise, they may try to explain the Coriolis effect due to the earth’s rotation, but they’ll probably start by saying “It’s complicated”. Ask a material scientist how diamond, graphite, and soot can all be pure carbon and yet look so different . . . . .well - it’s complicated! The advances in modern science and knowledge mean that our world seems ever more complex, and yet ever more wonderful and to be marvelled at. We also take more and more of this technology for granted and assume it will always work, despite the fact that – it’s complicated! We can phone our friends or relatives anywhere in the world from our mobile phones, and then get cross when it doesn’t connect, completely forgetting the enormously complex networks and equipment necessary to make it happen. We have come to take the complicated for granted. When Moses received the commandments on Mount Sinai, there were only ten, but it wasn’t long before they spawned a plethora of additional explanatory clauses (read Deuteronomy and Leviticus!). In contrast, Jesus taught us to go back to basics – to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves. As Christians, we cannot, and should not, ignore the complexity of our modern world, and the complicated and difficult situations it can present for us to navigate and interpret: relationships, faith, government, environment, etc, etc. However, I don’t remember anywhere in scripture where Jesus ever replied “It’s complicated”. Sometimes challenging, sometimes questioning, always caring, and always with the underlying principle for our Christian life – “love God and love your neighbour as yourself”. Why are so many people unable to grasp this simple principle? Well – it’s complicated! David

YOUR MAGAZINE NEEDS YOU! Can you help? The NIB needs volunteers to help edit and manage the magazine. If you could spare just a few hours each month, we would love to hear from you. The Magazine Team

NIB Donations You will find a little brown envelope in your magazine this month. Please support us by giving a donation, however small. There is a collection box in the White House Community Shop, Neatishead or send to me at the address found at the bottom of the adverts. Thank you to those of you who have already made a contribution. The NIB team is most grateful for your help. Yvonne Kendrick World Day of Prayer – St Peter’s, Neatishead This year’s service will take place on Friday 6th March at 9.45am at St Peter’s Church, Neatishead and will be followed by refreshments. Women of Zimbabwe have prepared this year’s service and they encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’ with them as they continue their often turbulent journey towards full reconciliation. World Day of Prayer is an international inter- church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. Rev’d David Smith

Easter Lilies We will again this year be decorating our churches with lilies at Easter. If you would like to make a donation towards their cost in memory of a departed loved one please contact Gail Murrells on 631427 (for St Michael’s, Irstead), Jane Fowle on 630249 (for St Peter’s, Neatishead) and Wendy Price on 536183 (for St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf) by Friday 27th March. Thank you.

St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf We had great fun at our Christingle service and tea party and raised just short of £137 for the Children’s Society. It was lovely to see so many there. Our coffee mornings begin again in March, the first one being on Saturday 21st March from 10am to 12noon. Come and enjoy a cup of coffee and a scone, look at the books on the book stall, buy from the produce table and enjoy a good chat and time of fellowship. On a more mundane note church cleaning will take place on Friday and Saturday 27th and 28th March from 9am. Coffee will be provided. Come and help if you can. Finally the fete meeting for planning this year’s fete will take place on Monday 23rd March at Barton Hall at 10.30am. If anyone feels that they can help at the fete in any capacity do come along to the meeting. The more helpers we can get the better and we are always looking for new ideas. Barbara Pilcher

St Peter’s Church Neatishead needs you! On 15th March at 10.30am our annual church meeting takes place at St Peter’s Church, where we will review information about what has happened during the previous year. However, we do not wish to dwell on the past but to look to the future and how we can sustain the day to day life of our church in our community for the coming year and help those individuals within our parish who require our support. At the annual meeting we elect our church warden(s) and this is the responsibility of the whole parish not just those on the church electoral role, although you must be present at the meeting to be able to vote. To vote for the Parochial Church Council members you are required to be on the church electoral role but that can be organised. We do sincerely invite everyone along to our meeting to have their say. If the meeting itself does not interest you but you would like to be involved in one of the many ways to assist our council members it would be much appreciated (do give me a call) – we are currently a very small team which means that a lot of work falls to just one or two in running the church on a day to day basis. I look forward to seeing you. Pauline Simpson (Church Warden) 07818 599303 2

Sound travels The sound of Barton Turf’s church bells has carried over the village fields for many years. But could it now be possible to hear them as far away as ? The answer is yes. A project is underway to form a sound archive of all the county’s many church bells. It will be housed at the Mancroft Ringing Discovery Centre, where visitors will be able to ‘ring their way round ’ via the new ringing simulators. Our six ancient bells were each separately recorded for the archive last month. Wendy Price

St Swithin’s, Ashmanhaugh Easter will be with us soon so please do note the services that will take place at all the churches in the benefice. There will be several throughout Holy Week and on Easter Sunday itself so there will be a time and service to suit everyone. Details of these will appear in our magazines shortly. Do please note now that the Service of Light will be held at St Swithin’s on the night of Saturday 11th April. I would really encourage anyone who hasn’t been before to come, it is such a wonderful service, but wrap up warm as some of it occurs outside. There will be no Easter Day service at Ashmanhaugh, but all the other churches in the benefice will have a service so no one needs to miss out. On that note please could anyone who wants an Easter lily in St Swithin’s to mark the memory of a loved one please let me know by Friday 20th March. The cost will be approximately £4.50. There are no social events planned for March. Anne Mulhall, Church Warden, 01603 784874, [email protected]

St Benet’s Hall Coffee Morning The February coffee morning was a great success with several new faces and £181.89 was raised towards the upkeep of the church. The next date is Saturday 7th March at the usual time of 10am to 11.30ish. There will be homemade cakes, plus books, raffle and of course coffee and scones so do come to meet old friends and make new ones. Gillian Jeckells

Friends of St Benet’s Abbey As many of you will recall, 2019 was a very special year for St Benet’s Abbey. Several events took place to celebrate one thousand years since the founding of the abbey. The Friends of St Benet’s Abbey (TFOSBA) was first formed in 2014 arising from a Norfolk Archaeological Trust project. The Friends have a valued role in maintaining and promoting St Benet’s Abbey as a special place. The committee plays an important role and we need your help. We are looking for a publicity and events champion to join the friendly committee. Could this be you? For further information and a chat about the role please contact me. Tina Clinch, 536890

Wanted – Norwich Foodbank Volunteers We are seeking volunteers who can spare a couple of hours per month to help out on a Thursday morning at the Wroxham & Hoveton United Reformed Church. For more information please contact Hannah Worsley on 01603 251733 or email [email protected]. Hannah can give you all the information about the centre and our work serving people in crisis with a supply of food and essential toiletries. We also offer a hot drink and a listening ear to our clients. You will find this work very rewarding so please come and join us. Irene Thompson, Foodbank Coordinator for Wroxham, Barton Turf

Friends and Neighbours On 9th January Louisa Dreisin came to talk to us about homeopathy. It was most interesting and informative, a subject that was very new to most of us. On 23rd January it was a quiz and mardle morning and also time to pay our annual subscriptions. Forthcoming events for club members: 12th March, a talk from Paul Roberson FBHI. His subject is ‘My life as a clockmaker at the Palace of Westminster (including Big Ben)’. We are all looking forward to this talk. On 26th March we will be entertained by the Silver Tones with Margaret Bond and friends.

Women’s Institute I know we have had a lot of rain recently and the rivers are flooded but that wasn’t the reason three volunteers from the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat were at New Victory Hall at our January meeting - they were there to give a talk on their activities, duties, equipment and clothing - and to tell us how they spent the £600 we donated last year. We hope never to have to use their services - bobbing about in the North Sea, awaiting rescue is probably not the time to ask where our money was spent! Actually, it was spent on life jacket canisters and visors. A trip to the Theatre Royal had been organised– “Made in Dagenham” - it dramatised the Ford sewing machinists’ strike of 1968 that aimed for equal pay for women - something for which the WI has campaigned for a long time. Monica Riley, 630336

Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf Community Heritage Group (NIBCHG) After the ‘full house’ at our January meeting for our Staithes presentation we are hoping for the same for the presentation on Wednesday 18th March at Neatishead School which will be on the events surrounding the withdrawal towards Dunkirk in 1940. This will be given by members of the campaign to raise funds for a memorial in Norfolk for the 97 soldiers who died at Le Paradis, including members of the Norfolk Regiment and our own Horace Yaxley from Irstead, whose brother George died a few days earlier in the same area. This is a fascinating and also very moving talk and is a fitting addition to our VE and VJ Day 75th Anniversary commemorations. Our planning for those commemorations on Sunday 10th May continue and we are keen to hear from anyone who has information about what happened locally either during the war or on VE Day and VJ Day. These memories will form part of our exhibition surrounding the War Time Incidents map created by the late John Yaxley and which will be on display at the New Victory Hall. Gareth Pritchard, Treasurer, 07881520063

NIBCHG are planning an exhibition of 1940s artefacts (fashions, furniture etc) over the weekend of the 9th and 10th May, commemorating the 75th Victory in Europe Anniversary. If anyone has any 1940s memorabilia that they would be willing to loan the group for the exhibition, we would be very grateful. Please contact Susan Lamb on 536240.

NABS – WORDS AND MUSIC… LIVE! THE SEQUEL WAML, as it is affectionately known, will be held at the NVH on Saturday 28th March at 7.30pm. After tea and large slices of yummy cake made by the NVH team, we all left with Richard’s recipes to try at home as well as being pleased that the afternoon had raised £610.10 for the charity Parkinson’s UK and £350 for NVH funds. Thanks and well done to all. Sally Church and NVH Events Team

The parish council have set a date for Saturday 21st March if you are interested in volunteering some time please contact our clerk for details.

Neatishead Parish Council Report The meeting held on 16th January covered such issues as pot holes in the roads as well as the entrance to the NVH car park, also the flooding issue in King Street. All these matters have been brought to the attention of the relevant bodies. The council noted with appreciation the efforts of volunteers clearing up rubbish from our road sides, in some cases quite a few strong lager cans! The poor condition of the public footpath around part of Alderfen Broad is to be reported to the NWT. Donations were discussed and approved for the Bowls Club, Community Gym and for the maintenance of St. Peter’s Churchyard. The illegally parked white van on the playing field car park has been removed. Finally, for the minutes in full please visit either the parish council web site or read them at either of the two noticeboards and please note the next meeting following this publication is on Thursday 19th March at the Neatishead Primary School Hall 7.30 pm. White House Stores Having missed posting an entry in last month's NIB, it seems a very long time ago, but here goes anyway...Thanks to everyone who supported us over Christmas, whether it was by coming to the village light switch on, ordering a turkey, or just frequenting the shop to keep us going in the quieter winter months. We have been selling some narcissi and cut daffodils lately which have been well received. We are always working to keep our stock refreshed, whether it be groceries, cards, gifts, etc. If there is anything you would like to buy from us that we don't usually sell, please do ask as we are happy to investigate new products. Just leave a note in our feedback book and we will get back to you. Thank you! Margaret Maxwell

Wildlife Notes Last month I wrote about the lack of small birds on my garden feeders during this mild winter. I am pleased to say that my Goldfinch and Greenfinch numbers have suddenly increased, presumably as the amount of natural seeds in the wild becomes scarcer and I now have two Bramblings visiting. One of the consequences of the increase in finches is the re-appearance of the Sparrowhawk, a smart looking male bird which has sped past the bird table at least twice this morning. Like them or loathe them, and I can hear you shouting “why do they have to catch my garden birds?”, you cannot help but admire their flying skills. There are about 35,000 pairs of Sparrowhawks in the UK, their numbers having recovered from the effects of pesticide poisoning in the 1970s. The male bird is smaller than the female, as is usual with birds of prey, as it gives the pair a greater choice of available prey species when they are feeding chicks. Female Sparrowhawks will take prey as large as a Wood Pigeon whilst the males prefer sparrow or finch sized birds. So how do you tell the difference between the male and female apart from the size? The male has bluish grey wings and back with a contrasting orange tinged breast and face whilst the female is much browner coloured and has a white stripe or supercilium above the eye. Both have a bright yellow coloured eye and distinct barring across the white coloured chest. They are woodland birds adapted to fly amongst trees and their long tail allows them to twist and turn very quickly. When hunting they use the element of surprise, flying low to pick up speed and suddenly dashing out from behind the cover of a hedge or building. Despite their skilled technique it is estimated that only about 10% of feeding attempts are successful. A classic sign of a Sparrowhawk kill is a circular pile of feathers on your lawn where the prey has been partially plucked by the hawk before taking it off to somewhere safer to eat. Keeping your feeders close to bushes rather than out in the open gives the smaller birds more chance to escape into cover. March is the month to listen out for the first Chiffchaffs calling their distinctive song as they return from Africa and to look out for the first spring butterflies. The RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum needs you! Last year the RAF Radar Museum had another very successful year. Not only did we celebrate being open for 25 years but we grew in volunteers. We are open four days a week (and each Bank Holiday Monday) and we need more volunteers to join our happy band of over 60 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking especially for people to help in our lovely cafe on a Saturday and as room guides. We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80. We can guarantee that you will have an enjoyable time and make new friends and you will be helping a charity to keep going and help us continue to provide an award- winning experience to our visitors. We offer our volunteers a friendly place to come to and we organise an annual trip and a Christmas lunch as a thank you for all your time, plus there are free teas and coffees always available in the crew room. Why not visit us and find out more? For more information telephone the Manager (631485) or email: [email protected].

Love of The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum is proud to announce the success of a recent application for grant funding from Love of the Broads. The grant will initially be used to record volunteers' memories in regard to their service years at RRH Neatishead. Stage two of this project will be recording visitors and former Neatishead personnel who may wish to share similar stories. Manager Lynn Kerslake said she was delighted that this project has now come to fruition. Grateful thanks go to Love of the Broads as it now gives the Museum funding to purchase relevant equipment and funding to display these precious memories both in digital and audio format. Accepting the cheque in January in the Cold War Room at the museum were Trustees Carl Lamb and Nick Farmer, along with Peter Howe from Love of the Broads.

Music Study Days in Horning (Supported by the Horning Boat Show) The first of the Music Study Days this year, ‘Byrd to Britten – 400 years of choral music’ will take place on Tuesday 17th March. Between Byrd’s birth in 1543 and Britten’s death in 1976 a wonderful range of superb choral music was composed and has been preserved. Following plainsong of medieval times choral music developed through several stages to produce the rich tapestry available to us today. This will be followed by: ‘The Organ and its Music’ on Tuesday 19th May ‘English Church & Cathedral Music: 16th to 21st Centuries’ on Tuesday 21st July ‘Seven Important English Composers’ on Tuesday 15th September ‘An early celebration of Christmas’ on Tuesday 1st December All study days are held in The Mill Suite, Horning Village Hall, 10am to 3pm, The cost is £5 per study day and includes a ploughman’s lunch, teas, coffees and handouts. For further details and enrolment form please contact Dr Peter Boshier, Whitegates, 32 Lower Street, Horning, NR12 8AA, 630695, [email protected].

Ashmanhaugh & Barton Wanderers Cricket Club The 2020 season will soon be upon us and exciting developments are taking place at your local village cricket club. Our juniors (and their families) worked very hard through 2019 with bake sales, raffles and games to raise money for a brand new club bowling machine; two very generous donations at the AGM means they have reached their target and the machine can now be ordered! We are delighted! ABWCC are also pleased to announce that, due to an influx of players, a third senior team has been formed. This team has been entered into the Mid Norfolk Sunday League and is designed as a slightly less competitive arena to give our older youngsters a taste of senior cricket as they progress through the teams. Anyone interested in joining for a game or two, any age, any ability, please get in touch. There is no obligation to play every week, ideal for older retired players wishing to play occasionally with friends. Winter nets are already taking place for both seniors and juniors, all at Cromer Academy – details can be found on the club’s social media or contact the coaching team via the website and all comers are very welcome. If you would like any information or are interested in playing or sponsoring the club please contact us via the club website or Twitter/Facebook accounts.

George Stammers I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many friends and family who supported George and me through his illness and continued to do so after he died in November. Over £400 was raised for the Priscilla Bacon Hospice Appeal at George’s funeral and as a family we are going to hold a fund-raising event at Grove Cottage on 20th June in addition to sponsored runs over the next few months. If you would like to be involved in our fundraising efforts for this much needed local cause please get in touch with me. With thanks, Jane King, 630002.
