Individual Note She was probably born c1857, the daughter of Charles Maher.

She was probably unable to read and write until after 1901, as between February 1880 and March 1890 she signed the marriage register and her children's birth and death registration entries by making a cross as her mark and the 1901 Census records her as being unable to read. However the 1911 Census records her as being able to read and write.

She is recorded on 31 March 1901 in the 1901 Census of Ireland living in a three room house at Tombreane, Co with her husband and children Andrew, Charles, Thomas and James. Household Return Form A (number B17) records her name as Margaret Alwell; being the Wife of the Head of Family; Roman Catholic; unable to Read; Aged 44; Female; Married; and born in .

She is recorded on 2 April 1911 in the 1911 Census living in a two room house at Tombreane with her husband and sons Charles and Thomas. Household Return Form A (number B18) records her name as Margaret Aldwell; being the Wife of the Head of Family; Roman Catholic; able to Read and Write; Female Aged 53; Married for 31 years, having had 6 children of whom 5 were still living; and born in County Carlow. The property had a Piggery, a Fowl House and a Shed.

On 4 June 1912 she appeared in the Petty Sessions Court charged with causing to be used a vehicle on the public street without lights. She was convicted and fined £6 and 1 shilling costs, which were duly paid. [Petty Session Court Book reference CSPS 1/8754].

She died on 30 August 1920 at Tombreen, Co Wicklow. Her Death Certificate records the Date and Place of Death as 1920 Thirtieth August Tombrean; Name and Surname as Margaret Alwell; Sex as Female; Condition as Married; Age last Birthday as 65 years;Rank, Profession or Occupation as Labourer's wife; Certified Cause of Death and Duration of Illness as Carcinoma of head of pancreas 3 months Certified; Signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant as James Alwell Tombrean Present at death; and When Registered as Eighteenth September 1920.

For Magaret - Name and Surname as Margaret Maher; Age as 22; Condition as Spinster; Rank or Profession as Servant; Residence at the time of Marriage as Tombreane; Father's Name and Surname as Charles Maher; and Rank or Profession of Father as Labourer. James signed the Marriage Register with Margaret signing by making her mark [with a cross]. John Keogh and Eliza Hupwell witnessed their marriage.

After their marriage, they lived at Tombreen, Co Wicklow between 1881 and 1920, with James continuing to live there until his death in 1928.
