Participants’ relationship Matinee on Friday 31 August at 3pm and development with Talawa does not end with the initial intensive 4‐week programme, as the Company continues to offer free support to participants as their careers develop. I came to TYPT looking for the empowerment to develop as a performer and writer, and I certainly succeeded, we all did. Talawa’s enduring faith in developing new artists is remarkable and for my own journey TYPT was the biggest part of that. Talawa Theatre Company Talawa is the UK’s primary Black led touring theatre company. Our work is informed by the wealth and diversity of the Black British experience, through which we create outstanding work by cultivating the best in emerging and established Black artists. We invest in talent, develop audiences and inspire dialogue with and within communities across the UK and internationally. By doing so we enrich the cultural life of all. Artist Development Programmes In addition to its productions, Talawa Theatre Company broadens the spectrum of work created by Black British artists by commissioning new writing, and the development of ideas through seed commissions. These programmes fall under Talawa’s MAKE initiative: A UK wide community of Black theatre makers empowered to create their own path through a range of development activity. Talawa MAKE activity includes: • Support for emerging and established writers, such as the Script Reading Service, Talawa Writers’ Programme and Talawa Firsts, an annual Festival showcasing new plays and work by Black writers and theatre makers • Studio Firsts, a space for artists and individuals to create new work • TYPT, our annual collaboration with emerging theatre makers • Skills development workshops and outreach activities, introducing people to careers in theatre

MAKE is supported by the Esmée Fairbain Foundation

Support Us For 30 years, Talawa has produced shows with leading roles for Black actors, addressing the lack of opportunities for Black actors on British stages.

Today, a lack of networks, confidence and personal and economic circumstances are just a few examples of the barriers that still exist for Black artists entering the theatre industry. Our vision is for a theatre industry, which is diverse and representative of the UK’s Black population. Talawa is a registered charity. We re-invest box office income, fundraising or earnings from hiring our space into our work.

Your donation will help us to: • Create productions that tour the UK every year • Read 150 brand new plays every year through the script reading service • Work in the community, introducing theatre skills to individuals and groups of all ages and backgrounds • Support emerging artists through Talawa Writers’ Programme, TYPT, Talawa Firsts and Studio Firsts, which form part of our MAKE community
