15 Years of Allstars

Ambition defines successful entrepreneurs and investors. Ambition sets apart the handful of pioneers that confront fundamental problems in the world’s largest industries and create innovations that transform business and society. However, the ambition of Europe’s leading investors and entrepreneurs has been questioned time and time again. This is why we have consistently set ourselves the objective of raising Europe’s ambition levels. When we brainstormed the concept of Investor Allstars in a basement in Shoreditch, the tech industry was on its knees, reeling from the dotcom crash, and Shoreditch was a long way from the hip, thriving destination it is today. It felt crucial to bring the ecosystem together to re-energise ourselves and define new ambition levels. We never dreamed that the event would reach the scale or age it is now at. Fast-forward 15 years and Europe has now produced three inspirational tech companies worth in excess of $10 billion each, and a further 54 pioneers worth in excess of $1 billion. These companies are having a profound impact on society, disrupting inefficient industries, creating tens of thousands of jobs and improving the lives of millions of people. Investor Allstars celebrates the entrepreneurs and investors that have created an ecosystem capable of fuelling these success stories. In a year that has been characterised by political upsets and market instability, the firms shortlisted for this year’s Investor Allstars have shown remarkable resilience. On average, the funds closed in the past 12 months by the shortlisted , growth and buy-out groups totalled $723 million, rising from $679 million in 2016. The total levels of Dealmakers in Technology investment activity have also remained consistent, with 431 deals made compared with 437 in the prior 12 months. The strength and resilience of the market demonstrates that Europe’s technology ecosystem is primed to enter a new league and become a dominant player on the global scene. We know how frenetic your schedules are, so thank you for supporting the event and taking the time to nominate. By collaborating and publicising the quite amazing success stories we are delivering, we will together take the ecosystem to the next level. Our deep gratitude must also go to our sponsors – Orrick, .ART, Barclays, Bird&Bird, Berenberg, Calibre One, CNBC, Cooley, JAG Shaw Baker, Shoosmiths and Taylor Wessing – and to our esteemed judges, who dedicated their time to debating the shortlists and selecting the winners. We truly love what we do and look forward to working with you to create even more global leaders of the future. Nick Fry Keynote speaker

Beginning his career with the Ford Motor Company, Nick worked in the UK, Detroit and Germany in areas including production and product planning. He moved to Aston Martin, becoming MD, and was responsible for its modernisation from a prestige but somewhat staid British manufacturer to the dynamic, aspirational global brand it is today. He returned to Ford, leading its European service division and then as product planning and business director. When Aston Martin was sold to private engineering and motorsport company ProDrive, he was appointed MD of the company. He helped lead its expansion into offering engineering services for the likes of Ferrari, as well as its motorsport success, winning World Rally and Sports Car Championships. Nick then moved to F1, as MD and then CEO initially with BAR Honda, which would evolve to become Brawn GP and eventually Mercedes Petronas. He restructured the Mercedes team on and off the track after its long-term absence from the sport. He built high-profile sponsorship deals, often in new industries, and led the team to its first race victory and subsequently World Championships both as a constructor and in the Drivers’ Championship with Hamilton. He also oversaw innovative marketing and commercial programmes. As a leader, Nick’s passion and drive for the best informs everything he and his teams do. Nick now heads up his own sports commercial and marketing advisory firm and continues to work in motorsport and with Mercedes F1. He was also appointed a UK business ambassador by the UK government and promotes British business expertise in engineering around the world.
