WINFRED T. BACKUS (Winnie) is a native of Middletown, Delaware and a graduate of Louis L. Redding High School where he was a Track & Field Athlete and a three year starter in Football and . Winnie was selected to the First Team All-State Basketball Squad for the 1957-1958 and the 1958-1959 seasons. Backus scored 1039 career points. He played in the 1959 Blue/Gold All Star Game and qualified for the All-State Track & Field Finals in that same year. After graduating high school, he attended Delaware State College (now University), worked and played in the Industrial League. Winfred retired from the Chase Manhattan Bank.

NATHAN J. EVANS is a graduate of Wilmington High School, Wilmington, Delaware, where he ran cross country and was captain of the Varsity Basketball Team. He made the winning shot during the last three seconds of the Boys’ Basketball State Championship Game to give them a 57-56 victory. He enrolled in Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina and after graduation, accepted a teaching and coaching position at Lower Richland High School (LRHS) launching a 41-year tenure as a teacher and coaching Tennis, Wrestling and Football. From 1992-93 Nathan was the LRHS B Team Coach and from1995-1996 he was the LRHS JV Coach. In addition to teaching and coaching at LRHS, he was the JV Basketball Coach at CA Johnson High School in Columbia, South Carolina. With a busy teaching and coaching schedule, he managed to earn a Master of Education Degree in 1994. Nathan was selected LRHS Teacher of the Year for the 1993-94 school year and was nominated for Who’s Who Among Teachers nine times.

VINCENT L. GARLICK is a native of South Wilmington, in Delaware, where his Basketball career began. In 1978. He enrolled at Newark High School as a part of the State of Delaware Desegregation Program. Newark High School won its first Boys’ Basketball State Championship in 1982. Today his boys’ Basketball Statistics are among the top 5 in all major categories at Newark High School. His college career consisted of two years (1982-1984) at Penn State University and two years (1985-1987) at Delaware State University (DSU). During his junior year at DSU he received First All Tournament Honors at the Ball State University Cardinal Varsity Holiday Tournament. During his senior year at DSU, he led the team in scoring (averaging 13.1 points per game) and received Third Team All MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) honors. Vincent served as Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at Sanford High School winning the Boys’ Basketball State Championship for the 1990-1991 season repeating as Champions for the 1991 -1992 season.

TIMOTHY M. GRAY, SR. attended Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. Delaware where he played Football, Wrestled and ran Track. He was a three-year starter in Football as a Nose Guard and Linebacker. In his junior year, 1979. He led the state in sacks, and was selected 1st Team All-State Defensive Team in1979 and 1980. Tim was selected to the Gold Team for the Blue/Gold Game and served as team captain. He also served as team captain for the Cape Henlopen Vikings, where he led the team in tackles and interceptions and received the Samuel Russell Jr. Award for Most Valuable Team Player. Tim was a two year starter at Delaware State University (DSU) in Dover, Delaware, recording 10 sacks, 5 interceptions and 5 blocked kicks on special teams. He coached at DSU 1 year, and Dover High School from 1998-2000, recording a 19-1 record with the JV. Team. JOHN C. MARTIN, SR. started his career at Kittrell College before moving to Fisk University as Associate Professor of Physical Education, coaching Track & Field and Cross Country Teams and served as Athletic Director. He served as President of the NCAA Track Coaches Association, Chairman of the NCAA Division III and coached for the Guyana South American Track & Field Team. He also directed the NCAA Regional Championships and NCAA Division I-AA Southern Regional Playoff Games. In 1986, Martin was appointed Director of Athletics at Delaware State College (now University) and remained in the position until 1996. During Martin’s tenure, The Hornets men’s and women’s programs captured 11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, (four MEAC Football Championships (1987, ’88, ’89, ’91), Volley Ball (1986), Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field (1987), (1989), Men’s Cross Country (1989), Women’s Cross Country (1990) and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field (1992). A Program was formed in 1992. John was inducted into the Delaware State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

WALLACE JAY MAULL attended Cape Henlopen High School from 1976-1979. He earned the position of starting Quarterback in1976, holding that position throughout his high school career, leading Cape Henlopen to its first State Football Championship appearance in school history. Graduating in 1979, Jay was accepted and began his college career at the University of New Haven in Connecticut receiving athletic scholarships for both Football and Track & Field. He played the Quarterback position for 2 seasons before playing the position. Some accomplishments included Eastern College Athletic Conference “Player of the Week” as well as being ranked 88th out of the top 100 Collegiate Sprinters in the 55 meter dash in Indoor Track & Field. After graduation, Jay became an assistant football coach at Delaware State University, before returning to Cape Henlopen and getting involved in Football and Track & Field Programs. From 2004-2007 Jay relocated to Illinois Collins School District where he became part of the coaching staff, before returning to Delaware to become part of the Sussex Tech High School Football Coaching Staff. In 2010, he returned to Cape Henlopen High School to coach Varsity Football and Track & Field.

DANA C. ROANE is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and attended Howard High School where she played basketball and was the starting guard for three years. She was selected to the Blue Hen All Conference Team from 1994-1996. Dana led the team in assists and steals. She is also the second All Time leading scorer in Howard History. She scored over 1000 career points in three years making her the leading scorer for each of those years and was voted Most Valuable Player her Junior and Senior Years. From 1996-2000, Ms. Roane played the guard position and was floor leader for the Delaware State University Lady Hornets. In 1996, Dana was selected to the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) All Rookie Team as a freshman. For the 1999- 2000 season she led the team in 3 point shots with 34, 63 assists and was second in steals with 47. In 2000, Ms. Roane graduated with a record setting career.

HOLLIS L. SMACK, JR. is a graduate of Woodbridge High School in Bridgeville, Delaware where he was a Basketball, Baseball and Cross Country Athlete from 1984 to 1988 before playing Basketball at the Delaware Technical & Community College Stanton Campus in 1989. Hollis was selected to the 2nd Team All-State Cross Country in 1986, and received Honorable Mention All State Basketball in 1987. During the 1978-1988 school year he received All Henlopen Conference Basketball Honors and was the Woodbridge High School Male Athlete of the Year. Also in 1988, Smack was All-Henlopen Conference in Baseball and selected to Blue/Gold Teams in Baseball and Basketball. Hollis attended Delaware Technical & Community College on a Basketball Scholarship for one year prior to joining the United States Army. He has coached Basketball in the Seaford Recreational League and the Delaware Lady Sharks Basketball Team of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Newark, Delaware. MATTHEW H. SPENCE, JR. attended Indian River High School in Dagsboro, Delaware where he was a key player in the back to back Henlopen Conference Championships and the 1980 &1981 Delaware State Boys’ Championships in 1980-1981. Their season record was 44 wins and 6 loses. From 1989-1991 he coached junior varsity boys basketball at Indian River High School. From 2004-2008 he was the assistant coach at Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown, Delaware and the assistant coach at Wesley College from 2008-2010. Matthew coached junior varsity boys at Seaford High School from 2018-2019 and is currently the head coach for Seaford’s Middle School Basketball Team. His Worm’s Quality Carpet Care, LLC has supported the program for 4 years by buying shoes, pizza’s clothes, etc. Matthew was Site Coordinator for the Georgetown Basketball League where over 120 kids participated 4 nights weekly for 6 to 8 weeks.

STEPHANIE TOLSON-SCOTT played Basketball for Lake Forest High School, Felton, Delaware, from 1980 to 1984. As a Freshman on the Varsity Team, she was All-Conference and All-State from 1980 to 1984. She was the first athlete at Lake Forest High School to attain a 1000 point career. Stephanie was also on the Girls’ Softball Team from 1981-1984 and received All-Conference Honors each year. Stephanie started coaching in 1997 as Head Coach at Dover Air Base Girls’ Team and later became the Assistant Girls’ Varsity/ Head Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach at Lake Forest High School. Stephanie was Founder/Director of Girl Little Spartans Basketball Program and the Pat Borowski Basketball Classic Tournament at Lake Forest High School. She was Vice-President and Head Coach of Delaware Magic Girls’ Program and Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at W.T. Chipman Middle School. Stephanie was Assistant JV Boys’ Basketball Coach at First Academy and Head JV/Assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach at Dover High School receiving Coach of the Year Honors. Stephanie serves on the DIAA Girls’ Tournament Committee.

JOHN GREGORY TAYLOR was born in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey and attended Pennsauken High School prior to entering Delaware State College (DSC) (now university), where he scored 42 touchdowns and 33 receptions over his DSC career. At the end of John’s college career, he was tied for the most career points in the conference, 254. He was named MEAC Conference Player of the Year in 1985, all MEAC First Team in 1985-1986 and drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1986. John led the in punt return yards in 1988. In his nine NFL seasons, Taylor recorded 347 receptions for 5,589 yards and 43 touchdowns. He gained over 1,500 yards and two touchdowns returning punts and 276 yards returning kickoffs, was selected to NFL Pro Bowl Team twice, and has three Super Bowl Rings (1988, 1989, 1994). His combined total of 94 punt return yards in those three games are the most by any player in Super Bowl History. He may be best known for catching the winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana during the final seconds of Super Bowl XXII in 1989. John has been inducted into the Delaware State Sports Hall of Fame, the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, and the Black College Football Hall Of Fame.

CHRIS H. WEBB sports career began at Seaford High School, Seaford, Delaware from 1973 to 1977. Chris played three sports, Football, Basketball and Track & Field, earning 11 varsity letters. In his senior year, he was selected captain of Seaford High School’s first State Tournament Football Team, its Tournament Basketball Team and the State Champion Track & Field Team. As a Free Safety he was selected to the All Henlopen Conference, All-State and All-Delmarva Football First Teams. In Basketball he was All Henlopen Conference First Team and Second Team All-State. Chris played in the Blue/Gold Football Game and the Blue/Gold Basketball Game contributing to wins in both games. In Track & Field he excelled in both long and triple jump as well as on the 4x100 and the 4x200 Relay Teams. Chris attended Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) were he played Varsity Football and Basketball. He later graduated from the where he became a weightlifter and currently holds State and Regional Records for Master 111 (55-60 years of age) in the bench press (430 lbs.), the squat (500 lbs.) and the dead lift (600 lbs.).
