His work is descended from the illustrative tradition of the early 20th century and runs through Alex Raymond, and Reed Crandall. Schultz works in a more naturalistic style than is typical of American but his art is by no means static nor is it slavish to photo reference. The images presented in "Carbon" are lush, dynamic and immersive. The skill on display here will inspire veteran artists while showing aspiring ones what can be achieved with discipline and dedication. I give this wonderful collection of Mark Schultz's work my highest recommendation.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Skipping straight to dessert and coffeeBy Richard A. TuckerAnother wonderful Flesk production seems like it should be old hat. It is not.The reason is that past publications, in this case Mark Schultz: Various Drawings line of sketch/art books, seemed to be as perfect as they could be. Then Mark and John Flesk go back to the drawing board and find some way to improve on perfection. They add another fold-out page, increase the page count... and best of all, they increase the page dimensions. Here we have the nice anti-ding gatefold covers, impeccable design and beautiful artwork, with a the process being the star as well as the resulting finished work. What is there to not recommend?Even the title of the book (series?), CARBON, speaks to the very simple act of making a mark on paper that will result, eventually, into a finished work of art. Carbon is the basic starting point but it can also be extended all the way to a finished piece of art with lush, varied tonal values and carry the illusion of those marks becoming something far more than two dimensional marks on paper. They can carry the illusion on to become genuine life, frozen in an instant, regardless of the thrashing activity being illuminated in that image, all is fixed through the window of the eye to the imagination in the brain. Once fixed there, it will remain.Every artist worth their salt should get this kind of production treatment. I hope more do.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. More Good Stuff.By Barton McGeeAnother excellent collection of Schultz's doodles and preliminary takes on his Xenoizoic Age characters and their "twins" in the Storms at Sea novella. Add this to your collection.

Following his acclaimed "Various Drawings" art book series, "Carbon" serves as the first of a new series assembling the best recent graphic works of Mark Schultz. The element carbon, common yet versatile, is the binder at the base of life on Earth as well as the source of the rich blacks that run through Mark Schultz's drawings. Similarly, the book "Carbon" binds an astonishing array of illustrative art rendered in brush and ink, graphite and carbon pencil, and it also introduces more color than ever before through the artist's increased experimentation with watercolor as an atmospheric element. This compilation showcases many new depictions of Schultz's lovely Pulpette heroines and scenes of grand adventure in otherworldly settings as well as an assortment of the preliminary drawings that develop into his finished works. The large format features four epic gatefold images, including a look at how Mark applies color over his black-line ink work. The vast majority of the art was completed over the last two years, with most of the fifty-plus pieces being published here for the first time.Schultz has produced art and stories for comics and speculative fiction for over twenty-five years. This volume represents his unique vision more than any other to date. As a special bonus, the artist's fascination with science is explored in his introductory text examining the process of working with a paleontologist to accurately depict Xenoceratops, a newly discovered dinosaur, accompanied by the preliminary drawings that evolved into the finished work.

About the AuthorMark Schultz is a storyteller by nature as well as by profession. His interests in adventure fiction and the sciences led him to create his awarding-winning comics series. He has illustrated a collection of Robert E. Howard's of Cimmeria and written the science primer The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA. Between scripting the weekly newspaper adventures of and producing images for his new personal art collection Carbon, he continues to chip away at the illustrations for his novella Storms at Sea.
