ROEBUCK BARRACKS

CLIENT: LIGHTAWAY LTD LOCATION: APPLETON ROEBUCK, SELBY, NORTH PROJECT VALUE: £20,000

Roebuck Barracks is a 6ha former Canadian Air Force site. It is located about a mile to the east of Appleton Roebuck in , to the south west of . The buildings on the site date from the 1940s/50s. The site was decommissioned in the 1960s and then was last used as a pig farm.

The site consists of a total of 49 buildings, surrounded by hard- standing, semi-improved grassland, tall ruderal vegetation and scrub. There are three small ponds on site, two situated towards the north and one towards the south. The site is bounded by an unmanaged mature hedgerow and surrounded by arable farmland, with small pockets of woodland 100 metres to the north and 400 metres to the south.

Proposals for the site include demolition of all structures on the site and redevelopment including the construction of sixteen large residential units. Total Ecology initially carried out an Extended Phase 1 survey, which established the need for further survey work due to the presence of suitable habitat for bats, great crested newts, badgers and reptiles, as well as the discovery of barn owl pellets.

An Ecological and Mitigation Enhancement Plan was then produced in order to guide the ecological aspects of the proposed development through the final planning and construction phases, and to draw together the ecological plans and opportunities for the site.
