FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- REGINA, APRIL 12, 1982
Former Saskatchewan premier T.C. Douglas will be in Regina May 5
to deliver the inaugural Woodrow Lloyd Lecture at the University of Regina.
Douglas, M.P. for the British Columbia riding of Nanaimo-Cowichan
from 1968-1980, will talk about "Woodrow Lloyd: The Man" at 7:30 p.m.
in the Education Auditorium.
The Woodrow Lloyd Lecture will be an annual event to commemorate
former premier Woodrow Lloyd's contribution to Saskatchewan education.
Premier from 1961 to 1964, Lloyd occupies a special place in the
University of Regina's evolution. His words at the laying of the
cornerstone of the first building on the new Regina campus have been
substantiated during the University's brief history: "If our need
had just been more classrooms and laboratories, this might well have
been achieved elsewhere with greater ease and good effect. But something
different can be done here -- different and worthwhile and needed."
As the first Woodrow Lloyd lecturer, Tommy Douglas shares with
Lloyd the experience of being premier of Saskatchewan and the distinction
of contributing to the political, social and economic life of this
province. Collective bargaining for civil servants, voting privileges
to those 18 years of age, the Saskatchewan Bill of Rights, universal
public hospitalization and public automobile insurance are part of the
legacy of Douglas' tenure as premier. Under his leadership, the
Saskatchewan CCF introduced North America's first universal public
medical care insurance plan, inaugurated in 1962.
Moving to the federal political scene in 1961, Douglas was elected
federal leader at the New Democratic Party's founding convention,
a position he held until 1971.
