IN MANY INDUSTRIES, new competition is disrupting the way business is conducted. Think department stores and cable television. Now the $12 trillion mutual fund industry is threatened too. Since 2007, mutual fund assets have grown less than 50%, while the collective amount invested in exchange-traded funds—baskets of securities that can be traded like individual stocks—has more than tripled, to $2 trillion. Traditional mutual funds are suffering from the growing popularity of low-cost passive investing.

X-Ray: Exxon Mobil ITS STOCK HAS WITHSTOOD THE GLOBAL OIL CRISIS—FOR NOW. by Ryan Derousseau

While consumers have delighted in plummeting prices at the pump, the same can’t be said for Big Oil. Energy stocks have sunk 24% since last summer, when crude prices peaked before being cut in half. Shares of Exxon Mobil, though, have held up well, falling just 10%. That’s because the country’s biggest oil company has worked hard to diversify from drilling—to natural gas and businesses that benefit from falling oil prices, like refining. Yet some of those ancillary endeavors face their own challenges, and analysts don’t expect oil to stay this low forever.
