© Copyright 2016 NAHA Aromatherapy Journal Spring 2016.1 4 Editor’s Note Spring I still haven't got used to spring arriving earlier here in Sedona, Arizona than it does in England, even after living here for ten years. However, although spring arrives at different times in different parts of the world, it arrives with an energy not seen in the other three seasons of the year. I watch each plant struggle through its growing stage, nurturing seedlings along the way, to hopefully blossom with the arrival of summer. So much energy is put forth into the act of growing that it is no wonder that spring is a season when we all–plants and humans alike–perhaps need the most energy, after waking from the slumber of winter.

And it is this thought that is reflected in several of our writers' articles in the 2016 spring edition of the NAHA Journal. Shanti Dechen writes about Spring Rejuvenation and the Wood Element of the five-element theory and how to cleanse with essential oils and plants; Amber Duncan provides us with some aromatherapy blends for the growing stages of pregnancy; and in my interview with Demetria Clark, I review her book, Aromatherapy and Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Breastfeeding. Some cleansing and energizing spring aromatherapy recipes are provided for you by NAHA's directors; and Roxana Villa gives you an insight into the detoxifying herb turmeric and how to use it as fragrance and flavor.

We also examine some complex medical issues and how aromatherapy may help; new writer Sandra Nosek discusses the use of aromatherapy for the symptom management of bipolar I disorder; regular writer Dr. Joie Power shares her experiences of working with aromatherapy and brain injuries, and how it can be used in the rehabilitation process; and PhD student Lisa Daly discusses using aromatherapy for disorders that affect mood, thinking, and behavior.

Elizabeth Ashley writes this time about aromatherapy for sinus infections, a common occurrence at this time of year as trees and other plants begin to bloom. This theme also comes up in Jade Shute's profile of green myrtle essential oil, with some essential oil recipes to help to clear the sinuses and the respiratory system.

Spring: A time to rejuvenate, cleanse, energize, and grow. See how essential oils and aromatherapy may help you with one or more of these themes in this, our latest, edition of the NAHA Aromatherapy Journal!

With aromatic blessings, Sharon Falsetto

Why Should You do an Internal Cleanse?

Cleansing the body gets rid of excess waste and dis-ease; it rejuvenates the vital energy of physical, mental and emotional well- being. Signs of internal toxicity can include: headaches, backaches, allergies, skin rashes, constipation, fatigue, immune weakness, insomnia, digestive issues, frequent colds, and general inflammation and weakness. What once was called manic depressive is now called bipolar disorder. “Every year, 2.9% of the U.S. population is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, with nearly 83% of cases being classified as severe.”5 There are three different types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I, Bipolar II and Cyclothymic Disorders. The focus of this article will be on Bipolar I Disorder. “Bipolar I is considered the most severe form of bipolar disorder, largely because of how intense and incapacitating the mania can be.”6 Mania is defined as “…heightened mood that can be euphoric or irritable and indeed as the mania progresses, irritability becomes more prominent and can eventuate in violence.”7 Disorganized thoughts, delusions, hallucinations, recklessness, impulsivity, increased risk- taking, and hyper-excitability are some of the symptoms of mania. There are eight sinuses; four pairs of:

Frontal (at the top of the bridge of the nose).

Ethmoidal (further back inside of the head in close proximity to the tear ducts).

Sphenoidal (furthest back in the head, by the optic nerve and pituitary on the side of the head).

Maxillary (under the cheek bones).

The sinuses are air-filled cavities designed to warm and filter air. These air pockets also prevent your head from feeling too heavy. They drain into the nose so when mucus builds up it trickles down the nose. Likewise if the nasal cavities swell, or become inflamed, it is harder for the mucus to drain; it backs up, causing Allergens congestion.
