Happy Easter

What springs to mind when you think of Easter?

For children, and for quite a lot of adults, I suspect, the first thing would be Easter Eggs. For others it would be the first signs of Spring with new life to be seen in the fields around the benefice.

However, the new life we celebrate at Easter does not depend on what we see around us. On Easter Day we shall celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. As St Augustine wrote many hundreds of years ago, “We are an Easter people, and Alleluia is our song.” On Easter morning we will join with countless Christians around the world in joyfully exclaiming, “Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, Alleluia!”

The resurrection is at the heart of our faith. If Jesus had just died on the cross, that would have been the end of his teaching. It is the fact that he rose again that showed that he was truly God and that gave his disciples the strength to proclaim the Good News. It is the resurrection that gives Christians the ability to carry on His work 2,000 years later.

So what we celebrate on Easter Sunday is Jesus passing through death and rising to new life. This gives us all the chance to start afresh through belief in Him

A Very Happy Easter to you all

Gerry Willis (Reader, King’s Wood Benefice)

The Table

The table in our dining room, Where daily dinners are consumed; Where Mother serves her wondrous pies! Where candled cakes light birthday eyes!

That table in our dining room Now stands against our fiery doom; Beneath it, we, in trembling fear Can feel the shocks as bombs fall near.

That table in our dining room Unseen within the blackout gloom Dark sentinel of precious lives As, overhead, the bombers dive.

The table in our dining room, It could, maybe have been our tomb! Protects us from our foes up there Supported by our fervent prayer!

The silence comes – the planes are gone We thank the Lord with joyful song As we emerge from our cocoon – The table in our dining room.

By Nigel Beeton Challock Summer Fair

Important Statement as a result of the Governments guidance issued regarding the Coronavirus pandemic.

It will probably come as no surprise that our Fair originally planned for 20th June 2020 will now be POSTPONED until 5th September 2020.

Please also note that the planned helpers meeting on 27th March was also cancelled and will be rescheduled once we have been given the all clear.... hopefully in the not too distant future.

We had thought that our fund raising Grand Raffle could still go ahead on 20th June but following the introduction of “Social Distancing” this too has now been postponed to 5th September 2020.

After a few months of this social distancing this will hopefully be an opportunity for the village to get together once again and celebrate the end of the Coronavirus! Stay safe and keep well Everyone!

Thank you for your understanding

John Burden On behalf of the Friends of Challock Church and the Fair Sub Committee.

Coronavirus/COVID-19 - Scammers active in Kent!

Scammers and criminals are already looking for opportunities to scam people as a result of the Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic. Happily, there are many more stories of kindness and generosity but we want to make people aware of the scams as they emerge – which they seem to be on a daily basis.

We have received reports from Kent Police of people door-knocking and claiming to be from the Health Authority.

What happens:  The criminal knocks on your door.  They claim to be from the Health Authority.  They offer to do COVID-19 testing on residents.  There are also reports of the criminal offering to take the residents temperature.

THIS IS A SCAM!

What to do:  Do not let them in.  Do not allow them to take any money or details from you.  Report to Kent Police on 101.  If you ask them to leave and they don't, contact the police on 999.

Please warn vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours.

Be cautious - scammers take advantage

Report There has been a report of an elderly Kent resident who lost money when they gave their bank card to someone who offered to do some shopping for them. They received one of these cards through their door and an individual offered to help, however, they actually stole money from the resident and were not seen again.

Payment Don’t ever give your bank or card details to anyone, even if you think you know them very well. You could either agree to pay in cash after they have delivered the shopping or pay them online if you have the facility to do so. Or maybe you could agree another method of payment - but never give your bank or card details.

Five hundred years ago, on 6th April 1520, Italian Renaissance artist and architect Raphael died in Rome of an unknown illness. He was 37.

Born Raffaello Sanzio at Urbino, he was orphaned at the age of 11 and led something of a nomadic life. He was immersed in neoplatonic philosophy, as was the pre-Reformation Church of his time, which combined wealth, intrigue and political power, often to the detriment of spiritual coherence.

Raphael’s work, however, was of the highest quality. Best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican, he achieved tremendous clarity and lucidity, trying to develop a calmer more accessible style than Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

He spent his early years in various North Italian centres, then absorbed a great deal from the artistic hub of Florence before spending a celebrity-style last 12 years in Rome, working for two Popes. He eventually put together an impressive – possibly uniquely large – workshop of 50 pupils and assistants.

He never married, but was deeply attached to ‘La Fornarina’ – Margherita Luti, the daughter of a baker from Siena. His grand funeral was attended by large crowds, 4 cardinals in purple carried his body & he was buried at the Pantheon his own request. 23

The Lifeboat Project The Lifeboat project has been set up by Changing Minds Kent CIC to support those affected by and currently living in isolation because of the Coronavirus.

Like most voluntary organisations, we rely heavily on delivering our programmes to ensure we can sustain our services to the local community. During these coming weeks, we are remaining positive and determined to provide a range of innovative services to ensure we can thrive and continue to support those most in need.

To ensure we can make this happen, we need your support – We have developed the Lifeboat project to support the most vulnerable, and equally help sustain our current service provision. We have set up a ‘Go Fund me Page’ to ensure we can generate generous support to roll out these vital services. www.gofundme.com/f/the-lifeboat-project-corona-virus-relief

Changing Minds Kent currently provides social inclusion and skills development opportunities for individuals living in Kent from our social hub, "The Lodge" based in Westgate-on-sea.

Usually we provide a safe and relaxed environment for individuals to connect with others, improve their overall well-being through our range of activities such as gardening, sports, mindfulness, cookery and much more.

What will we be offering?

Whilst we are remaining calm and upbeat, for others this can be a daunting and challenging time and can impact an individual’s mental and physical wellbeing. Our support will include:

 Mental health support, advice, anxiety management, food and essentials for the local community throughout the Corona virus Pandemic. This will consist of weekly podcasts, videos discussing all things wellbeing, exercise, nutrition and more!  Free delivery of care packages for those in isolation in our community, including food, toiletries & entertainment (Crosswords, card games, colouring books, etc).  Establish a phone line for those seeking a friendly chat / video chat if possible.  Set up a social media hub for individuals to access for tips on combating loneliness whilst in isolation.  To grow and adapt the project alongside the ever-changing situation to provide support for as many affected individuals as we can possibly reach.  We will also be developing some ‘Virtual Training packages’ in exchange for donations so please watch this space.

I would be most grateful if you are able to promote, share and support this cause to ensure we can support all those that are affected.

Stay At Home To Stop Coronavirus Spreading Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. For more detailed Information please go to: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

 Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible  One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household  Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person  Travelling to & from work but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

Important - These 4 reasons are exceptions – even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

Staying at home if you're at high risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus Do  Stay at home at all times – do not leave to buy food, collect medicine or exercise  Stay 2 mtrs (3 steps) away from other people in your home as much as possible  Get food and medicine delivered and left outside your door – ask friends and family to help or register to get coronavirus support on GOV.UK if you need it  Prepare a hospital bag, including a list of the medicines you're taking – in case you need to go into hospital  Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds  Make sure anyone who comes into your home washes their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds  Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available  Clean objects and surfaces you touch often (like door handles, kettles and phones) using your regular cleaning products  Clean a shared bathroom each time you use it, for example by wiping the surfaces you have touched

Don't  do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family, unless they're providing essential care  do not stop taking any prescription medicines without speaking to your doctor

Staying at home if you or someone you live with has symptoms of coronavirus How long to self-isolate If you have symptoms of coronavirus, you'll need to self-isolate for 7 days.

After 7 days:  if you do not have a high temperature, you do not need to self-isolate  if you still have a high temperature, keep self-isolating until your temperature returns to normal

28

You do not need to self-isolate if you just have a cough after 7 days. A cough can last for several weeks after the infection has gone.

If you live with someone who has symptoms If you live with someone who has symptoms, you'll need to self-isolate for 14 days from the day their symptoms started. This is because it can take 14 days for symptoms to appear.

If more than 1 person at home has symptoms, self-isolate for 14 days from the day the first person started having symptoms.

If you get symptoms, self-isolate for 7 days from when your symptoms start, even if it means you're self-isolating for longer than 14 days.

If you do not get symptoms, you can stop self-isolating after 14 days.

Symptoms and what to do Do not leave your home if you have either:

 A high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)  A new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Stay at home.

Use the 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do. Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.

Get an isolation note Use this service if you have been told to self-isolate because of coronavirus and you need a note for your employer.

https://111.nhs.uk/isolation-note

This service is only for people who:

 have symptoms of coronavirus  live with someone who has symptoms of coronavirus

If you have symptoms of coronavirus, the first thing you need to do is get health advice. If you have not already done this, use the 111 online coronavirus service

If you have to stay at home but feel well enough to work, ask your employer if you can work from home. If you can work from home, you will not need an isolation note.

You can also use this service for someone else. 29

Nature Notes Whilst there are many more flashy flowers for us to admire this time of the year it is the Lesser Celandine that I draw your attention to. Lesser celandines are quite common and are to be found in usually damp shady places, a walk down Mill Lane shows them in abundance, in such shady margins there is an abundance of leaf but few flowers whereas on sunny banks such as roadsides they form a blanket of colour. Lessor Celandine This plant is a hairless perennial whose yellow flowers possess narrow, very glossy petals that may fade white also close during dull weather. Its leaves which are heart shaped are dark green together grow from a small bulb; it can be a bit tiresome if you get it in the garden.

Lesser Celandines are members of the buttercup family and its Latin name is Ranunculus Ficaria. There is also a Greater Celandine Chelidonium majus to which the lesser is not at all related. I realise that we are all somewhat scared by Latin names but the foregoing aptly illustrates how confusing the use of local names can be when Lessor Celandine identifying plants.

The use of Latin nomenclature is universal and therefore common to all people and we can thank the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus for his pioneering studies during the 18C.

He was a professor at Uppsala University who studied widely in the Swedish countryside resulting in a classification of numerous plants and animals until his death in 1778.

Wye Surgery Patient Participation Group

ONLINE CONSULTATION

On March 16 Wye Surgery went live with the new online system for contacting your GP. replaces ‘Ask my GP’. It may be accessed through the surgery website (wyesurgery.co.uk) and it enables patients to submit their symptoms electronically 24 hours a day 7 days a week and receive a reply by the next working day either by text message, email or telephone. was piloted by GP practices in the West of England and is now used by over 1200 GP practices, including other practices in the Ashford Primary Care Network.

The app requires patients to answer a series of questions and the answers will sign-post them to the most appropriate care, including a face to face appointment, self-help, advice from a pharmacy or a simple administrative response (a sick note or access to test results without the need for an appointment). includes a Red Flag alerting system that identifies potential critical illnesses and fast-tracks GPs’ responses.

One advantage of the new system is that it will remove the need to queue up on the telephone at 8 o’clock in the morning, as it can be submitted at any time of the day or night. It is also timely, as surgeries are facing unprecedented demand as a result of the corona virus pandemic. will allow patients to have access to clinical advice from GPs without having to come into the surgery, reducing the risk of infection spreading to other patients and/or to surgery staff.

The new system should reduce waiting times before clinical decisions are reached and could release more GP time for face-to-face appointments. is a more advanced system than ‘Ask my GP’ as it allows more space for free text to describe their symptoms. It is also safer for the patient allowing the Dr to identify urgent cases quickly, rather than risking them being the last in a telephone queue when all the appointments are gone for the day. Clearly, not all patients can use the Internet and there are separate arrangements for children under 6 months old.

Online consultation services do require a change of culture and mind set as we move away from the traditional face-to-face visits to the Dr, but online technology is capable of offering innovative new ways of maximising the clinical resources we have available.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING. Pat Crawford provides the RURAL FOCUS PRESS GROUP COMMENT AND ADVICE COLUMN

A recent BBC report investigated the threatening changes taking place in Mongolia – a country about which we don’t normally hear a great deal. Apparently over the last 70 years Mongolia has experienced higher temperature rises than the world average. According to the UN this, combined with overgrazing, has resulted in a quarter of Mongolia’s grasslands turning to desert. As the world’s second largest producer of cashmere for which demand continues to rise, Mongolia is faced with the problem of raising more goats which produce the fine wool while at the same time reducing environmental impact.

The British government has changed its mind about onshore wind farms receiving public money. Funding was withdrawn in 2016 when David Cameron was prime minister but, with the 2050 target for net emissions growing ever-closer, the government has said that solar and onshore projects can take part in the low-carbon auctions that award energy contracts.

The government’s Urban Tree Challenge Fund has resulted in 13 projects being given the go-ahead as result of which 22,000 large and 28,000 smaller trees will be planted in England. The initiatives will each receive a share from a £10 million pot. The fund is administered by the Forestry Commission whose chair, Sir Harry Studholme, said "Not only do trees in urban areas help to improve wellbeing but they also offer benefits in many other ways, like helping tackle climate change and mitigating flood risks”. Meanwhile increasing numbers of British gardeners, combining consideration for the environment with desire to produce food, are planting fruit trees.

‘Business’ and ‘the environment’ clashed when the Court of Appeal blocked Heathrow’s proposed third runway on grounds that the Government had failed to take account of its commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Regarded as a massive relief by environmentalists, some leading business leaders are warning that failing to proceed with the project will have vast impact that will destroy the hopes of a global Britain.

The Rural Focus group would like to remind readers that every tiny individual effort to reduce carbon emissions helps to produce a vast collective contribution.

Footnote. The Rural Focus Group includes representatives/individuals from the National Farmers’ Union, Country Landowners’ Association, Action for Communities in Rural Kent, The English Apple Man, Hadlow Rural Community School, Greenwich University, Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, Kent Farmers’ Market Association, Friends of the Earth, Kent Young Farmers, Professor Ian Swingland, Produced in Kent, Men of Kent and Kentish Men, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, Kent Tree and Pond Partnership, East Malling Research, et cetera. The Group, set up by Pat Crawford who is the main sponsor, is supported by Professor Chris Atkinson, David Bartholomew Photography and Kings Hill Marketing Consultancy Ltd. Other rural-related groups are invited to apply for membership. Please direct enquiries to: [email protected]

Unprecedented Times - Support Available In what are unprecedented times Ashford Volunteer Centre have endeavoured to help where we can to highlight support mechanisms still in place and those offers of support coming in. In partnership with we request that offers of support are recorded and viewed centrally. There may still be opportunity for ad-hoc and specific links but this approach may ensure more offers and needs are matched. Ashford Volunteer Centre cover the whole so do help us help all those in need – urban and rural.

There is a new online form from Ashford Borough Council for community groups to register what they are doing with the council – so the council has an up to date record of this and can contact groups directly. We would appreciate if you can utilise this form but also share with any others in your communities who may also be offering support.

Just put ashford.gov.uk coronavirus help for the community into your favourite search engine (Google, Bing etc) click on the first result, alternatively go to

The provision of an after school club, which is OFSTED approved, allows parents access to affordable childcare and it provides the children (aged between 4 and 12) with a safe place to be whilst their parents are at work. This also benefits the wider community by helping rural schools stay open.

Neighbourhood Watch

I hope you find yourselves well and coping with these difficult and challenging times. I have not had to write to you too much recently because things have been pretty steady and calm in our area.

I have listed below the constant same reminders to be alert to which still plague many other parts of the Ashford District.

The key areas are:

1. Keep your main property secure at all times even if you are just popping out.

2. Keep sheds, garages and any outbuildings as secure as possible as tools stolen from here can often be used to break into main homes. Thieves may target these types of premises even more than usual as they will hope families are holding a few extra household good and supplies during this medical crisis.

3. Leave absolutely nothing on show in a parked vehicle especially at night. Vans and commercial vehicles with tools left in them are especially vulnerable.

4. Care with notes for delivery drivers, "I'm out all day please leave round the back "can be read by anyone. Also delivery drivers may well just leave parcels and packages outside homes as residents are "self isolating"

5. Care with bogus callers and distraction burglaries. These have even increased with persons using the coronavirus as an excuse to target people in their homes.

6. Be alert to scams by Landline telephones, mobiles, emails, letters and face to face on your door steps. As with 5 above beware of any calls by phone, email or in person using the coronavirus as a reason to carry out criminal actions

7. Do not hand over any monies or bank cards etc to strangers offering to get shopping if you are in isolation due to the virus or self isolation as a precaution.

To decent folk it is absolutely abhorrent that people could target vulnerable members of the community in these difficult times. They will!! To the criminal and selfish members of our community they will view this as a "business opportunity".

You will by now have heard of the tragic and dreadful incident that occurred in Ashford on Saturday when a young man received fatal injuries from a knife resulting in arrests and charges of murder. This has stunned Ashford and indeed the wider community and only strengthens the need for the Anti Knife Crime Campaigns and Seminars that have recently been run in Ashford. It is very worrying when you read, see on TV or hear of these type of incidents, when it occurs in our town it is scary and the police must ensure it does not become part of life in Kent.

Be Extra Alert & Vigilant Please During The Coronavirus Problems

Mick’s Computer Chat

What does Google know about me? When you search on Google, they keep your search history forever. That means they know every search you’ve ever done on Google. On it’s own that’s pretty scary, but it’s just the beginning of a very deep pool of data that they collect on people.

What most people don’t realize is that even if you don’t use any Google products directly, they’re still trying to discover as much as they can about you. Google trackers have been found on 75% of the top million websites.

Most people also don’t know that Google runs most of the ads you see across the internet and in apps – you know those ones that follow you around everywhere? That’s Google, too. They aren’t a search company – they’re a tracking company.

If you do use Google products, they track you even more. In addition to tracking everything you’ve ever searched for on Google (e.g. “weird rash”), Google also tracks every video you’ve ever watched on YouTube. Many people actually don’t know that Google owns YouTube; now you know. And if you use Android (yeah, Google owns that too), then Google is also usually tracking:  Every place you’ve been via Google Location Services.  How often you use your apps, when you use them, where you use them, and who you use them to interact with. (This is just excessive by any measure.)  All of your text messages, which unlike on iOS, are not encrypted by default.  Your photos (even in some cases the ones you’ve deleted).

If you use Gmail, they of course also have all your emails and contacts. If you use Google Calendar, they know schedule. There’s a pattern here: For all Google products (Hangouts, Music, Drive, etc.), you can expect the same level of tracking.

Oh, and if you use Google Home, they also store a live recording of every command you (or anyone else) has ever said to your device! You can check out all the recordings on your Google activity page. https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity

The Myth of “Nothing to Hide” Some may argue that they have “nothing to hide,” so they are not concerned with the amount of information Google has collected and stored on them, but that argument is fundamentally flawed. Everyone has information they want to keep private: Do you close the door when you go to the toilet, or cover your windows when it gets dark? Privacy is about control over our personal information. We don’t want it in the hands of everyone, and certainly don’t want people profiting on it without our consent or participation.

On an individual level, lack of privacy leads to putting people into a filter bubble - Who Decides What Websites You Visit? Getting manipulated by ads, discrimination - Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads, fraud, and identity theft. On a societal level, it can lead to deepened polarization and societal manipulation as we’ve unfortunately been seeing multiply in recent years. continued next month…..a solution?
