Ahoy Racers,  If so, what changes should be made from the previous formats? Rather than scheduling If you are a CYC member and participate in races on one evening every week, perhaps racing at the club, then this message is for you. every other week would be better so that we I’m Mark Van Doren, the newly elected 1st avoid spreading out our racing population Vice-Commodore, and I want to figure out how over too many dates and focus our racers on to improve our racing program so that it best fewer dates, hopefully resulting in better suits our active sailboat racers. I am convinced attended, higher quality races. that listening to the competitors is the key to  Maybe Thursday evenings are better than better racing and more participation, which Wednesdays? Maybe a weekend format should contribute to closer camaraderie among similar the one that the LWS uses would all club members. Towards that end, I am work best? scheduling a meeting for active racers to be held at CYC at 6:30 pm on January 5th. Everything  Maybe we should ditch the idea of having a will be on the table. CYC 1st Vice-Commodore These points are a few of the things that have been on my mind as I ponder the direction of CYC’s racing program. I’m sure that many of you have other ideas and I look forward to hearing them.

CYC Website Photo Submission! Thanks to Tom Sayres, the first photos were received on our new website feature– SUBMIT YOUR PHOTOS, under the Member section!!!! Here’s what Tom submitted:

“Niece Katie Caroline Sayres (from Germantown), now a freshman UT student joined Uncle Tom Sayres in the LWS race on Sunday November 20, 2016 on Stephanie and Tom's 21' little Spirit. Not only was this Katie's first time in a race, it was her first time on a sailboat, and she loved it! By the last mark of the second race, Katie took over in the low wind conditions and did a great job of rounding the mark at the helm, without incident. Fun Sailor's Group now has a new member. “

Remember, you too can upload photos to the website- http:// www.concordyachtclub.org/, Members, Submit Your Photos.

Catherine Trapp CYC Winter Gathering

The Holidays are over! It’s a New Year! Now, let’s have some fun! The CYC Winter Gathering festivities will be held on Saturday, January 21st! Social hour begins at 6 PM, and then dine on an Italian buffet featuring Meat and Veggie Lasagna, with accompaniments, starting at 7 PM! Adults $16, Children $5. A-L bring Appetizers; M-Z bring Desserts. And, after dinner, enjoy the smooth sounds of Left Foot Dave! AND, to have some major fun, there will be a “Boat Tote” contest!! What? Yes, a Boat Tote! Fill a tote with those “I simply cannot do without these” items for an overnight boating trip. No matter how quirky! Compete against your fellow CYCers for the most creative “must-haves” in your tote! So, your Boat Tote can be as magical, or as fundamental, as the imagination allows. Or as the need is met!

Also that night, CYC will be sponsoring a Career Fair, where members can sign up for 2017 Work Hours- be it Facility (like normal work parties), Racing or Social work hours. Mark Van Doren, Vic Tyler and I will be on hand with sign up stations for these work hours.

And speaking of signing up for Work Hours, we need help to insure this event is as awesome and fun as we plan! There are several areas where help is needed! So, contact me at [email protected] if you would like to help!

Thanks, Catherine!

NEWS FROM THE HARBORMASTER

Neil Quigley, Interim Harbormaster

Storage of dinghies on A-Frame racks - $10/month (6 months/yr)

The A-frame dinghy storage racks are the only assignable storage space for which the club has not consistently charged a fee for use: slips, moorings, trailer spaces, dry racks and storage lockers are all rented to members, but not the A-Frame racks. Therefore, in the interest of fairness, because they use club resources to build and maintain, and because the County has determined that the A-frame racks are taxable rental space, the Board voted on 13-Dec to begin charging for A-frame storage space in 2017.

The charge will be the same as for Dry Racks: $10/month per boat (but this charge will only be collected for the 6 'warm' months of the year, May- October, which is also when the lake level is up) i.e., $60 per year.

Since this change may prompt some members to make alternate storage plans at home, members will have until the end of January to remove their boat(s) if they don't want to be assessed this new charge. At the end of January, the Harbormaster will document which non-training fleet boats are still on the racks, and will ask the Treasurer to send invoices to A-frame users.

Finally, if you want to apply to use one of the vacant A-frame shelves, please do so via the on-line storage request page on our website (click here).

Sincerely, CYC Board and Harbormaster

Ponder This……..

Do sailors' sunglasses have to be seeworthy?

Is a leak in the back of a boat a stern warning?

If swimming is good for your shape, then why do whales look that way?

Daffynition- Clew: 1) Evidence leading to recovery of a missing sail. 2) Indication from the skipper as to what he might do next. 3) What a new sailor often doesn't have any of.

Humorous Boating Quote-

“Here, in Miami, amusement-seekers will come to the marina, set up folding chairs, and spend a highly entertaining day watching boat owners perform comical maneuvers such a forgetting to set their parking brakes and having their cars roll down the ramp and disappear, burbling gaily, below the surface.”
