n 1981, San Francisco revived the Navy and Marine celebration known as Fleet I Week. This weeklong event has spread to ports on both coasts, and three years ago to Los Angeles. It is an opportunity for service members to see the city and to give back by providing community service hours. It is an opportunity for Angelenos to tour ships, enjoy concerts, see flyovers and other demonstrations, much of which is free. Preliminary reports from L.A. organizers estimate that more than 250,000 people (public and military) attended LA Fleet Week over Labor Day weekend (August 31–September 3) this year, making it one of the largest in the nation. The average age of a military vessel crew member is 25 and many are thinking about what they will do after completing their service. Fleet Week gives them a chance to have some fun, see what Los Angeles has to offer and, for us, we get a chance to show them what LAPD is all about! For the first time, the LAPD had a significant presence at LA Fleet Week. SWAT, Dive Team, K-9, Mounted Unit, Bomb Squad, Hazardous Materials and the Force Options Simulator (FOS) were all part of the LAPD display. The course, as described in the center’s catalog, instructs students on “how to treat yourself in a hot zone (ex. Active Shooter) when no one is coming to help or there is no time.” The physically demanding class combines classroom time with exercises.
