Welcome to our town’s first ever arts weekender.

Over the course of three days this September, artists and creative people around Burnley are opening their doors, giving everyone a unique opportunity to see their work, share their passion and celebrate the arts. Whether you’re seriously creative or just mildly curious, we hope there is something for everyone in this programme of workshops, talks, demos, discussions, exhibitions, tours and performances.

Openings has been put together by Burnley’s creative community, to showcase what they’re up to – we hope you’ll get stuck in. Events are free, unless highlighted and advance booking is essential for some events. Please check each event listing for detail. Ready? Let’s Go! Writer in Residence

Winston Plowes Our festival writer will become an embedded poet and word artist in Burnley throughout Openings. He will be turning over stones, scratching the surface and shining a light on the obscure and interesting, celebrating our town and tickling its fancy with his metaphors. Winston will be helping people discover beauty under their noses, listen to the silence in secret corners and see Burnley from a different perspective.

Winston Plowes shares his floating home in Calderdale with his seventeen-year-old cat, Sausage. He teaches creative writing in schools, universities and to local groups while she dreams of Mouseland. His latest collection, Tales from the Tachograph was published jointly with Gaia Holmes in 2018 by Calder Valley Poetry.
