6 Belfry News

Gill Duffy recently gave me an interesting article by D. Rondeau in which the author writes about the five bells of Gedney cast in 1794. He mentions that he was unable to go back earlier than this time. I had a similar problem when I visited the Lincoln Archives as unfortunately the Gedney Town Book 2 comes to an abrupt end at the year 1788. There are no records for later years, which was most disappointing as I really wanted to investigate the casting of these bells. Why was this work carried out and who paid for such a major undertaking , which in to- day's money would cost in excess of £100,000?

Without doubt the five cast in 1794 were not the first in the tower, being recasts of an earlier ring of four bells. This is substantiated by records of a visit to Gedney by Thomas Hedderly ( a Nottingham bell founder) on April 29 1747 when it was " Agreed at---- with Thomas Hedderly for ye running of ye fourth bell" There follows a list of payments with the words "was received ye old bell". It therefore seems that an older No 4 bell was recast by Hedderly at this time. Of course the words "ye fourth bell" suggest that there may have been a fifth bell, a tenor, but this is not proven-one has to be so very careful in jumping to conclusions. Suffice it to say, these earlier bells were broken up in 1794, either at Gedney or after transportation to Downham Mar- ket and the metal used to cast the five new 1794 bells still in service today. Their tone is partic- ularly good, each bell being in tune with itself sounding as well as its fundamental note, an octave hum, a minor third and a fifth. Very unusual for bells cast in those days as at that time tuning was not properly understood. Founders could get the fundamental note correct but not the "hum", minor third and fifth harmonics, resulting in rather poor sounds.

Thomas Osbornes' Downham Market foundry operated from 1779 to 1832 when it was sold to Thomas Mears of . Five of the bells at and the excellent ring of ten at Wisbech are products of this foundry and there are others still in use around the county and further afield. Although the foundry has long gone its site is known from the aptly named Soundings Alley" close to the centre of modern Downham and a lasting reminder of a suc- cessful enterprise. John Bennett

The Bell Ringers Christmas Dinner

Tuesday, December 10th was the occasion of our sixth annual Christmas Dinner, this year held at the Rising Sun, Gedney Drove End. Twenty-three ringers and friends from and Gedney, with visitors from Lutton, Spalding and enjoyed an excellent carvery followed by a choice of desserts. We look forward to a successful 2020 but do need recruits if we are to keep our bells ringing. Anyone interested in "having a go" at what is an interesting and healthy exercise?

7 FLEET CHURCH

Many thanks to everyone who has signed up for this year. To date 137 numbers are in the pot!

Fleet Church 50/50 Club

January WINNERS 1. Karen Powell No. 61 £25 2. Audrey Howell No. 79 £15 3. Ann Cutler No. 44 £5 Thank you to all the people who support this method of raising funds for the church

CHRISTMAS SERVICES

We were delighted to welcome pupils from Fleet Wood Lane School for their Carol Service, which was also very well attended by parents and grandparents. The Christingle Service for Years 5 and 6 is now becoming an annual tradition that is thoroughly enjoyed by the children who delight us with their excellent participation. Many thanks also to those who came to our Church Carol Service and to the Eucharist on Christmas Eve. RECYCLING OF CARDS

Unfortunately Peter Graper is no longer able to recycle cards for sale at Fleet Church. Very many thanks to all of you who have, in the past, given cards for recycling. It has been very much appreciated and has, over the years, raised a sizeable amount for the church.

CHRISTMAS ITEMS IN FLEET CHURCHYARD

This is to remind you that all Christmas wreaths and other items should be removed from the churchyard, please, by 2nd February, which is Candlemas. This marks the end of the Christmas season

FLEET WOOD LANE PRIMARY SCHOOL

If you go to Tesco in Holbeach you may have noticed that Fleet Primary School is one of the designated organisations that is collecting blue tokens. With the funding they will hope to “bring the classroom outside, encouraging enrichment, enquiry and fun, whilst learning by creating an area where children can explore outside in a safe environment.” Please do consid- er supporting this project by placing your tokens in their box at Tesco.

8 FUTURE OF ST MARY MAGDALENE, FLEET

Everyone who reads this magazine regularly will know that the Mid Elloe Benefice of four parishes does not have a priest at present. We are very fortunate to be able to continue with regular services on Sundays, as well as other services, such as funerals and Christmas services, with visiting clergy, who are officially retired or who are serving in other parishes. There have been many meetings, discussions and work go- ing on behind the scenes to find a solution. When the post was advertised last year there were no applicants. The post is being re-advertised in the Church Times in Jan- uary. We are very grateful to Revd Canon Rosamund Seal for guiding us through this difficult process. It has been a struggle to keep things going during the past year.

An additional problem for Fleet is the struggle to finance the costs of maintaining the building and churchyard in good order; of paying the everyday costs of heating and lighting the building; of funding repairs; of ensuring we uphold our values of mission and outreach; and even more significantly paying our Parish Share to the Diocese, which in itself has financial problems. Last year we only managed to pay a third of our Parish Share, whilst the other parishes in our Benefice paid theirs in full.

We are very grateful to those who do support us with our specific fundraising: Flow- er Festival, Arts and Crafts event, 50/50 Club. We also have access to some funds such as Mary Bass Charity, Fleet St Mary Magdalene Trust and the Parish Council, but all this does not add up to something in the region of £25,000 needed each year to make ends meet.

We are hoping to improve the fabric and facilities of the building. At present we are investigating the possibility of building a toilet and refurbished kitchen area so that it would become easier to provide adequate facilities for a wider range of functions.

If you feel any connection at all to this beautiful church, which has survived for cen- turies, we wonder if you might contribute a small amount each month or annually through the Parish Share Giving Scheme, which allows the contributions to be Gift Aided if possible. Would you consider giving even £5 a month, £100 a year or per- haps more?

I am not writing this in any official capacity. My husband and I do not live in Fleet Parish but over the past few years we have cared a great deal about the church, as a place of worship, a beautiful building and a source of outreach and mission to the local community. Please let me know if you are willing to support Fleet Church just a little more in 2020, so that we can feel there is a sustainable future for it.

SCHOOL CHRISTINGLE SERVICE

The Christingle Service took place on Wednesday 18th December. The Christingles were made at Gedney School in the morning and the Church service took place in the afternoon.

As the children sang their carols, particularly the Christingle Carol, the candles were lit and the children encircled the congregation of parents and friends with a ring of light. The glow of the candles in the children’s faces was just magical.

CANDLE-LIT CAROL SERVICE

It was lovely to welcome so many people to our Carol Service in December. Around one hundred and eighty people came to hear again the story of Christmas and sing the wonderful carols. We were pleased to be able to light the church path again despite the weather forecast.

Thank you to everyone who helped in the preparations for the Carol Service and those who came on Monday to tidy up. Definitely a case of ‘many hands make light work’!

TABLETALK LUNCH

December and January lunches were both very well attended. Those attending the December meal enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch. The children from Gedney School then came and entertained us with some carols. Some of the younger ones then came and chatted to the diners. It all made for a lovely atmosphere.

January diners were served a beef casserole followed by fruit bun pudding. The lunches are held monthly and are an opportunity, particularly for those who live alone, to have a chat whilst enjoying a meal. If you know anyone who might be inter- ested then please do contact either of the numbers below.

The next Tabletalk Lunch will be held on Wednesday 12th February at the usual time of 12 for 12.30 in Gedney Church. Please book your place by contacting one of the following:-

WREATHS, FLORAL TRIBUTES AND VASES

On behalf of the Parochial Church Council could we please remind everyone that Christmas wreaths and floral tributes should be removed from the Churchyard by 2nd of February, which is Candlemas and marks the end of the Christmas season. It is then that all decorations are dismantled and put away.

As mentioned in the December newsletter, the Churchyard grass seems to start grow- ing earlier each year and it would help considerably if tributes were removed before the grass cutting season commences. Please note that vases and other ornaments should only be placed in line with the gravestones so as not to obstruct the mowers, nor become damaged.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

‘The Lord’s unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise’. Lamentations ch.3 vs.22-23.

In a collection of poems lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC and its aftermath of ruin and exile for its people, the prophet in this verse strikes a note of trust in the Lord and hope for the future.

However bleak our present circumstances, we have to take the long-term view and maintain a steadfast trust and hope in our Sovereign Lord, who is forever faithful to his promises.

Joyce Waterfall apologises to her friends and contacts for not sending them Christmas cards in 2019, because she finds difficulty in seeing to write. She does, however, wish you all a happy new year 2020!

An interesting aside… In his recent documentary Blue Planet II, David Attenborough high- lights an astonishing discovery made by the team on a submersible, 1000 metres down on the ocean floor: a series of springs bubbling up into the water inhabited by varied marine life. Compare the announcement with God’s question to Job in the Book of that name (written about the 6th century BC):

‘Have you been to the springs in the depth of the sea? Have you walked on the ocean floor?’ Job ch.38 v.16. Food for thought… 12 ST LUKE'S CHURCH

CANDLEMAS AND ASH WEDNESDAY

Two significant dates in the Church’s calendar will be celebrated during the month of February: 2nd February is Candlemas and 26th February is Ash Wednesday.

Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of her son Jesus. This day also marks the ritual presentation of the baby Jesus to God in the Temple at Jerusalem.

The Gospel of Luke says that Jesus was met by Anna and Simeon. Simeon held the baby Jesus and called him a Light to the World.

The festival is called Candlemas because this was the day that all the Church's can- dles for the year were blessed. On Candlemas night, many people place lighted can- dles in their windows at home.

Like some other Christian festivals, Candlemas draws some of its elements from Pa- ganism. In pre-Christian times, it was the festival of light. This ancient festival marked the mid point of winter, half way between the winter solstice (shortest day) and the spring equinox. Some people lit candles to scare away evil spirits on the dark winter nights. People also believed that Candlemas predicted the weather for the rest of the winter. Ash Wednesday is a Christian holy day of prayer and fasting. It is pre- ceded by Shrove Tuesday and falls on the first day of Lent, the six weeks of peni- tence before Easter. Ash Wednesday is traditionally observed by Western Christians: most Latin Rite Roman Catholics observe it, as do some Protestants like Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Nazarenes and Independent Catholics.

As it is the first day of Lent, some Christians begin Ash Wednesday by marking a Lenten calendar, praying a Lenten daily devotional, going to a church service and abstaining from a luxury that they will not partake of until Eastertide arrives. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of repentance ashes on the foreheads of participants to either the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or the dictum "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of a period of reflection and repentance.

Looking ahead to ‘Thy Kingdom Come’

The Revd John Leach (Growing Disciples Officer) writes...

This year we are once again encouraging our churches to join in with the global ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ (TKC) movement during the days between Ascension and Pentecost (21st – 31st May 2020). There won’t be a central TKC gathering in Lincoln Cathedral this year, and we hope local churches will make the most of the novena (period of prayer). There are things that can help you as you plan for this.

Resources

The main TKC website (https://www.thykingdomcome.global/) has a selection of videos which can be used to promote TKC in the parish, as well as a link to a further website (https://www.cpo.org.uk/ thykingdomcome) with ordering information for a selection of printed materials. We have a limited number of the Prayer Journals in the Resources Room (at Edward King House in Lincoln) that are avail- able free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

What might we do?

TKC begins with the conviction that prayer really does make a difference, and that the more focused and specific our prayers, the easier it is to see the difference they make. So we want to use this special op- portunity to join with the Anglican church (and many others) worldwide to focus our prayer on the mis- sion and growth of the Church, just as Jesus’ first disciples gave the same period to fervent prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit to equip them for their mission.

Individually – people might be encouraged to use a resource such as the Prayer Journal in their own daily prayers at home.

As a parish – parishes might wish to plan a season of morning, midday or evening prayers at which peo- ple can gather. They might also wish to consider whether the children’s resources would be useful in their ministry to local schools.

As a grouping – if your church is grouped with other churches, there might be an opportunity to gather together for prayer and worship. Pentecost Sunday (31st May 2020) is a fifth Sunday, when many groups choose to worship centrally rather than in individual churches.

As a deanery – it might be possible to organise a deanery service or prayer event at some point during the novena, or even a deanery service on Pentecost Sunday. If an outside speaker is required, we can help.

Now is the time to begin to plan for TKC. The diocesan Mission Team are here to help and encourage in any way we can.

For further help, or to request free copies of the Prayer Journal, please contact me by email ([email protected]) or call 01522 50 40 49.
