ANNUAL REPORT 2017 MISSION ARTIST VISITS Free Arts NYC empowers youth through arts and mentoring programs to develop their creativity, confidence, and skills to succeed The Museum/Studio Visit Program creates opportunities for teens to have access to leaders in the NYC visual arts community. Youth and mentor pairs meet monthly to tour artists’ studios, participate in creative workshops, and OUR PROGRAMS build visual literacy. 2017-2018 artist visits include Christopher Wool, Sheree Hovsepian, Lawrence TEEN ARTS PROGRAM (TAP) Weiner, KAWS, Eddie Martinez, and Sarah Dineen.

Teens ages 14 -19 explore the arts as a potential academic or professional goal. Together with their mentors, they visit artist studios and museums, develop portfolios for school applications, attend career training workshops, and work at paid internships.

FREE ARTS DAYS (FAD)

Youth ages 6-13 pair one to one with volunteers at a “pop-up” arts festival for an afternoon of art-making and exploration with a supportive adult mentor. •Family Free Arts Days Volunteer as a family! Each family is paired with one or two youth for a day of collaborative art making and play.

•Museum Free Arts Days Tour a museum or cultural institution with your buddy, guided by a trained museum educator.

•Art Parties Adults-only volunteering. Help us prepare materials that will be used in our programs across the city.

ALISSA’S STORY: FREE TO BE AN ARTIST

Inspired by her deceased mother’s interest in Japanese culture, Alissa loves anime but was unsure how to channel her passion. She joined the Creative Career Program in the fall of 2017. Over the course of the year, she visited over 15 companies to learn about creative professions in industries ranging from publishing to EXPENSES fashion to marketing from companies including Facebook, Viacom and Penguin Random House. 39% Free Arts Day Program She was especially interested at Nathan Love, an animation studio where “it felt like everyone 32% Teen Arts Program who worked there was family with each other.” She related to Joe Burrascano, the founder and 22% Fundraising CEO, whose story of wanting to be an animator despite considerable odds was both familiar and 7% Management & General inspiring. Alissa worked closely over the year with artist Eddie Martinez. “He teaches us techniques, but he doesn’t tell us what to do,” she said. “He is so inspiring to me, and because of him I created my favorite piece of art ever, an oil .” Since joining Free Arts, Alissa has gained considerable confidence.
