Note 80,000 of the salmon ova and 10,000 of the sea trout ova were taken to Middleton Hatchery when they reached the eyed stage so that they could be reared through the critical "swim-up" stage at which large-scale mortalities have been experienced at Langcliffe in the past. 15,000 salmon ova were transferred to the Yorkshire Water Authority in exchange for 15,000 sea trout ova; these sea trout ova were also taken to Middleton Hatchery. 35,000 salmon ova were purchased from Thurso in Scotland, and these were taken to Dunsop Trout Farm for development to the fed fry stage.

2.2.3.2 Salmon and Sea Trout stocking ex Langcliffe, 1980. Because of the mortality problems with fry experienced at Langcliffe in the past, 47,500 of the salmon ova laid down in Autumn 1979 were transferred to Middleton Hatchery as soon as they reached the eyed stage. The resulting fry, together with those produced from the Ribble/Hodder and Yorkshire sea trout ova taken to Middleton immediately after stripping, were planted out in the Ribble, Hodder and Wyre tributaries in May, 1980. (See Table 2.2.2.2).

3,500 salmon ova and 7,700 sea trout ova were retained at Langcliffe so that investigations could be continued into the mortality problems.

Survival of the salmon through the critical alevin stage was reasonable, but that of the sea trout, which hatched later, was very poor. By early August 1,500 salmon and 100 sea trout fry remained, and these were planted out in that month, shared equally between the Ribble and Hodder systems.

Note 23,000 brown trout fry were moved from Hollingworth Hatchery to Langcliffe during April, 1980. These fish were grown-on to 4"-6", and the 14,500 survivors were planted out into various rivers during August.

* To 15th October only.

** Taken in Broadraine Trap.

*** Forge Weir counter out of commission January - March and after 15th December.

NOTE: The Fish counter at Skerton Weir on the River Lime monitors fish movement, at low flows only, and many fish bypass the counter at higher flows. The total nuniber of fish counted in 1980 was 3311, but this is a considerable underestimate of the true total, and the monthly figures have not been published as they give an innacurate picture of seasonal movement.

4.5 River Derwent The counter at Yearl on the River Derwent was commissioned in 1979 and was in use throughout 1980. However because of various operational problems the fish counts for several months are known to be inaccurate, and at the time of preparation of this Summary it had not proved possible to produce a reliable set of monthly totals. The data is still being examined, and if reliable figures can be derived they will be published in a future Summary of Fishery Statistics.

-34-- 5. COUNTS OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT SPAWNING REDDS

5.1 North Cumbria

* Frequent spates made counting difficult, particularly in Irthing, Gelt and Lyne, and the counts given are likely to be incomplete.

-35- 5.2 West and South West Cumbria

In all the years for which figures are given high river levels throughout November and December made effective counting difficult, if not impossible, and the counts should be regarded as incomplete.

Note High river levels for much of the spawning season in all three years resulted in incomplete counts on many rivers, in particular the Lune, and in 1980 the Leven.

Counting on the Ribble, Hodder and Wyre was impossible in 1980, and for this reason no table of figures for these rivers can be included.
