fermanagh.gaa.ie/lotto SFC Preview by Gareth Cauldwell Sports Editor The Impartial Reporter It is championship semi-final weekend and there are some intriguing contests lying ahead in both the Quinn Building Products Senior Football Championship and the Kevin Courtney Car Sales Intermediate Football Championship.

The action gets underway with maybe the most eye- catching game of the weekend as champions Derrygonnelly continue their bid for a sixth New York Cup on the bounce when they face Kinawley at Brewster Park.

The Harps came through a dog fight against Roslea to seal their place in the last four while the Brian Borus saw off Erne Gaels in the quarter finals and this promises to be an interesting tussle.

Kinawley have already beaten the Harps this year, shading a well contested league encounter, but neither side will read anything into that and it is Derrygonnelly who will go in as favourites.

They have the experience and know how as well as no shortage of quality in the likes of Ryan Jones, Mickey Jones, Garvan McGinley, Conall Jones, Shane McGullion and Stephen McGullion and are clearly the team to beat. However, last season’s Intermediate champions, Kinawley, having been showing steady progress and they have plenty of talent within their own ranks in the shape of Tomás Corrigan, Ruairi Corrigan, Tom Keenan, James Allen, Shaun Doherty and Conor Murphy as they look to reach a first senior championship final since 1993.

The second senior semi-final wraps up the weekend as Ederney come up against Teemore on Sunday evening in Brewster Park.

Ederney will be bidding to make it through to a second final in three years and they were deserving victors over Belnaleck in the last round. The St. Joseph’s side are lively in attack with Paul McCusker, Sean Cassidy and Mark McCauley all capable of rattling up scores while veteran Marty McGrath provides that physical presence in the middle of the park.

Teemore though will be no pushovers. The Shamrocks are the only side with a 100 per cent record this season having won all their games in Division Two before knocking out Tempo in the quarter finals so they will come into the game with confidence.

If Ederney showed one weakness against Belnaleck it was under the high ball and it is an area that Teemore could exploit with Barry Owens a real handful at full forward.

However, that is not their only tactic as against Tempo they mixed their game up well and showed patience on the ball when needed.

Eoin McManus has been cleared to play after having his red card in the quarter final over turned and that will be a big boost for them. The Shamrocks will also look to Cian McManus, Damian Lee and Niall Clarke. Talk to us if things are getting to you. Call 116 123 for free In between these two games there is plenty of other action, including the Intermediate Football Championship semi- finals.

The first semi-final will see Enniskillen face Aghadrumsee in Tempo on Saturday evening. Enniskillen are the favourites for the Intermediate title and as a Division One side they will be fancied to overcome the challenge of the Magpies.

However, Pat Cadden’s men took the scalp of another top flight side in the quarter finals in beating Devenish and they will know that the pressure will be all on the Gaels. Defensively, Aghadrumsee will look to the experienced Noel Beggan, Eugene Kerins and Ferghal Sherry while at the other end of the pitch they carry plenty of threat in Eddie Courtney and Thomas O’Hara. A youthful Enniskillen side though will be looking at this as another step towards returning to senior grade and they will be aiming for a big performance.

Johnny Cassidy will lead their defence while Eoin Beacom and Brandon Horan give them a solid platform at midfield. And further forward Conor Love, Callum Jones and the experienced Richard O’Callaghan will be looked to for scores.

Then on Sunday lunchtime it will be the turn of Belcoo and Maguiresbridge to battle it out for a final spot at Brewster Park.

The O’Rahilly edged out in a tight encounter in the last eight and they will now be targeting a return to the final having lost last year’s decider to Kinawley. Shane McCabe’s side is backboned by an experienced core in the likes of James McGrath, Niall Leonard, Paul McGrath, Ciaran Flaherty and Brian Cox while younger players like Eoin Shiels and Laurence McKeown have also been making an impact.

Last season’s Junior champions, Maguiresbridge, though will provide a stern test for Belcoo. A strong second half took them past St. Pat’s in the quarter finals and they will be looking to build on that on Sunday.

They will obviously be looking for big displays from county duo Ciaran Corrigan and Daniel Teague while Matthew Teague, Ryan Hyde and Niall Carson will also be key figures.
