If the weather is kind, it will be a lovely day.

Future Runner’s Of The Month

We would like to invite all club members to nominate a peer for future runners of the month. The committee feel it is important that our members recognise and celebrate each others achievements. Thank you to the nominations received in March.

If you would like to nominate a runner, please email our Chairman James on [email protected] by the 25th April, naming your runner and offering an explanation for your choice. From the nominations received, the committee will choose the final winner. Cathy’s Birthday Half Marathon

Sunday 17th March was Cathy Howe’s 65th birthday. She very sadly lost her beloved husband Derek in December and as it was a special birthday, a group of us booked Hampton Court Palace half marathon to run with her and make her day special.

We met at Dawn’s house at 6.30 ready to travel in convoy. After storms Freya and Gareth, the previous two weekends, the morning was lovely; a crisp, bright and sunny spring morning – perfect for a run! Sarah Wilson and Theresa were the most amazing cheer squad and placed themselves at mile 2 / 10. The run started off in the grounds of the Palace and exited to the left and along the tow path. We crossed the river and ran back along the other side where the S&S cheerers could still be heard!! The run continued along live roads for a few miles before running back along the tow path. The last three miles were inside the grounds – running on grass which was a bit slippery and muddy!!

Continued … … continued

Once everyone had passed the cheer squad, they encouraged and ran home with Carol Bellamy who brought the team Buddy Runs home. Once everyone had finished and we were wearing our medals with pride, we headed back to Bushy Park where we One of the lovely things about our had parked for a post run picnic. We dined with the deer, had club is how great we are at getting homemade cake, prosecco and sang happy birthday! The together to run. Whether it be to weather was just about on our side…we saw black clouds and train for an event or just for rain coming in the far distance so did pack away a little quicker company, this is a great way to get than planned and as we were in our cars exiting the carpark, to know each other better (as well down came the hailstones!! as making you get out of the house when maybe you are just not A lovely run and a well-timed picnic which hopefully mad the feeling motivated). If you are day memorable for Cathy! planning a run, and are happy for others to tag along, please do post Cathy had a and finished in 2:16:33 and third in her details on the social page (where, age category. Well done to the birthday girl! when, distance and pace). Sarah Clapp Hastings Half

Hastings half saw the 1st of our Sussex grand prix league races and what an event it was.

Last year we had snow but this year was the absolute opposite with sunshine and warmth. Hastings half is well known for its hills but you get them out of the way after the 1st half and then you’re rewarded with a great downhill section and a 2 mile flat along the seafront which clearly helped with pacing for most of our S&S team. We had a 7th place finisher, lots of course PB’s, some that were just grateful to finish due to getting over an illness and/or injury or lack of sleep and training but best of all the atmosphere, support and the sense of being part of an amazing team was apparent.

Good luck to Rob Kernaghan on his new venture to Cornwall as this may be his last club race for us although we may have twisted his arm to come back from time to time to run more races.

Continued … … continued

So that just leaves me to thank Steve Baker, Ian Blackham, Jo Fiveash, Mary Freestone, Janine Haynes, Rob Kernaghan, Chris Lobs, Matt Prescott, Jim Scott and Ken Tulley because without you all the SGP wouldn’t exist.

Our next event is Hastings 5 which unfortunately clashes with our WSFRL race The Hedgehoppers 5 and the Gatwick half so I realise it may not be a priority event, but on the 26th May we do have the Rye 10 which is a lovely low key event and definitely one for the bucket list. Please see below links to the next 2 races and I can’t express enough that you don’t have to be competitive or fast as these are always great team events whatever your reason for running is.

Farewell to Rob

We would like to wish Rob Kernagham farewell as he moves to Cornwall this week. Rob has completed many many runs as a Saint and will be missed at events. We hope he will join us for local runs when he visits Sussex. The committee will be organising a little something for him, from the club.

Good luck, keep in touch and keep running! Parkrun news
