Rinaldi's wines have taken their rightful place among the most revered examples of the Langhe's old school... for Rinaldi's methods are among the most traditional among Barolo's truly great producers and his wines are monuments to this approach-powerfully structured, hauntingly perfumed. Rinaldi states his philosophy this way: "It's the opposite of a mass-produced product. It has angles, not curves..." Bouchard produces this from nine acres of estate vineyards in Corton. This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a very reserved nose at first, but unfolds in the glass to reveal hints of yellow plum, orange peel and light limestone scents. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite saline in the mouth, with commendable precision toward the finish. This is certainly one of the better Corton-Charlemagnes. 92-94 points. Mostly Tempranillo but with 5% Merlot matured five months in oak vats, 18 months in new barriques (equal parts American and French), three months in used barrels, and then 5 more months in the vats - whew! 7029 2004 Il Poggione Brunello - 95 Parker The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. The estate's 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Brunello is never inexpensive, but this is the real deal, and in relative terms, it is one of the world's great values in fine, cellar worthy wine. Incredibly, there are 18,000+ cases of the 2004 Brunello, so it should be fairly easy to source in various markets. Terreno's 1997 Riserva is ready to drink, and it gives as much on the nose as it does on the palate. Produced near Greve from one of the oldest estates in the region, the goal of Terreno is traditional expression (with present-day skill). It offers a dark ruby color to go with a big, sweet nose of cranberry, wild strawberries, crushed flowers, forest floor and spice. Full- bodied, layered and elegant, with a supple, rounded and sexy texture, it packs plenty of fruit, yet is graceful, beautifully balanced and seamless. Wine & Spirits 7043 Jewels of Spain Pairing (Parker 96s) The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 is a superb blend of Tempranillo from the villages of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and fermented in stainless steel for 18 days at 25 C. Malolactic fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 38 days. These wines are marked by a long aging in used American oak barrels following the most strict Riojan tradition; four years during which time the wine was manually racked eight times. This is usually my favorite wine from La Rioja Alta and 2005 is one of its best showings, going back to the quality of the vintages of the 1950s and 60s. The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical. The palate is only medium-bodied but with great concentration of flavors that are very tasty, mineral, almost salty and framed by ultra-fine tannins and smashing balance. A great classic. This wine will be released in October 2015, a full ten years after the vintage. At this quality level this is a bargain. Only 150,000 bottles were produced. La Rioja Alta celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2015. Last year, I only tasted three wines from La Rioja Alta and I tasted six this time. The quality is as good as ever, with superb wines from the almost-perfect 2005 vintage coming into the market. 9004 Pattern & Contrast Second graders looked at the collage work of Henri Matisse to form their mini collage. They learned of the artist's use of biomorphic shapes - or in other words, shapes that remind us of nature. Their focus for this piece was to repeatedly cut biomorphic shapes to create a pattern using contrasting colors. We then came up with a way to combine collages that reflected a visually satisfying balance of color and shape. Approximately 27"x32" in size. Second Grade

9005 Community Third graders have been learning a lot about portraiture and facial proportions this semester. This piece is a collection of portraits that expresses their skill in accurately drafting a self portrait as well as a sense of community as a group of unique and diverse individuals. Class Projects 9006 Unity and Variety Inspired by the geometric patterns of a classic quilt of many names: Wanderer of the Wilderness, Rob Peter to Pay Paul, and the Mill Wheel to name a few, 4th graders learned how textile design can display visual themes of variety and unity. They each created their own radially symmetrical designs that were split into quarters, rearranged and joined with the work of their classmates resulting in a collection of concave and convex curves making a bold and colorful statement of collaboration.
