Howard County Arts Council Annual Report FY 2014

Officers t is with heartfelt thanks that we present this President Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2014. And, it is only through the Buzz Bartlett collective efforts and contributions of our friends and Community Liaison members that we are able to achieve them. Vice President The accomplishments highlighted in this report would Mark Coates not have happened without your involvement and support. Howard County Public School System Topping this year’s accomplishments: Secretary Phyllis Madachy Grants Administration Community Liaison • Awarded 69 grants to local and regional arts organizations and county PTAs Treasurer totaling a record $585,672. James Henstrand • Awarded over $50,000 to individual artists in the form of scholarships, program grants, M&T Bank honoraria, and awards. Immediate Past President Advocacy Susan Porter Arts Advocate • Welcomed nearly 40,000 visitors to the Howard County Center for the Arts and provided Members opportunities for 3,000 artists to showcase their work. Deborah Chen • Recognized exemplary leadership in the arts through the Howie Awards. In FY14, Howies Community Liaison were awarded to musician Bruce Casteel (Outstanding Artist), Oakland Mills Middle School Mark Coates Larry Collins art teacher Raissa Howera (Outstanding Arts Educator), and arts advocate Toba Dobkin Barth Board President IT Business Developer (Outstanding Community Supporter of the Arts). Michelle DiNiro • Provided technical assistance and served on committees statewide to advocate on behalf of the Carroll Community Bank County arts community. Thomas Fahs Corporate Office Properties Trust • Published a quarterly newsletter and calendar of arts events. July–November 2013 • Maintained an active social media presence resulting in 26,900 unique visitors to Beverley Francis-Gibson www.hocoarts.org, expanded e-newsletter circulation, and increased our online audience Community Liaison through Facebook and Twitter. Tim Hughes Programs Comcast Spotlight • Mounted 12 exciting, original exhibits that featured 207 artists and 400 K-12 students. Julie Hughes-Jenkins Coleen West Corporate Office Properties Trust • Placed 12 new temporary outdoor sculptures at community sites County-wide. Executive Director January–June 2014 • Provided affordable rehearsal, performance, and studio space to over 60 artists and arts groups. Tim Kelley • Presented Fabulous 50+ Players musical theatre outreach programs at senior and community centers Howard Bank County-wide. Margaret Kim • Provided hands-on experiences in the arts to 120 children attending the Ellicott City and Tubman Head Start AllCare of Centers through our highly acclaimed Head StART in ART artist-in-education program. Freda Lee-McCann • Hosted the Cultural Arts Showcase as a service for PTAs and other cultural arts presenters to audition and meet Artist artists and performers. Mary Peitz It is important to note that we ended the year in the black—thanks to our many supporters. Grant Programs Howard County Arts Council grants are awarded based on artistic merit, ability of the applicant to carry out the project and level of service to the community. Grantees are selected through a competitive process in which applications are reviewed by a volunteer advi- sory panel made up of academics and artists representing a variety of disciplines. Grant award recommendations are then reviewed and approved by the HCAC Board of Directors. In FY14, HCAC awarded 69 grants to local and regional organizations and county PTAs totaling $585,672.
