SONGBIRD TO LONG-TIME INDUSTRY SUPPORTER CASSIDY IN CRITICAL CONDITION by Perry Lefko VISIT The racing world was saddened to hear that entertainer David Cassidy, a successful owner/breeder, is currently in a Florida hospital in critical condition following a reported organ failure. Though known to the world as Keith Partridge in the '70s television show The Partridge Family, the 67-year-old maintained a connection to racing, including donating his time to equine charitable causes, even though he is no longer active as a Thoroughbred owner/breeder. "He spent every summer in Saratoga whether he had a horse or not," said New York trainer Gary Contessa, who has known Cassidy as a client and a friend for 20 years. Cont. p4 (click here)

Pope purchased the nine-time Grade I winner for $9.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, one of several high-profile broodmares she has bought at auction over recent years. AWe went over this for a good three days with Wayne Sweezey and other advisors and looked at a lot of stallions, possible matings and a lot of options,@ Pope said. AArrogate is a horse with a great pedigree and was a brilliant racehorse. On pedigree, it worked. When you look at him physically, it worked. She made headlines in 2012 when she paid $10 million for Horse of the Year (Saint Liam), also at the Fasig-Tipton Sale. Some of her other high-profile purchases include 2011 GI winner Plum Pretty (Medaglia d=Oro) for $4.2 million at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale, Groupie Doll (Bowman=s Band) for $3.1 million at the 2013 Keeneland November Sale and Betterbetterbetter (Galileo {Ire}) for $5.2 million at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Contessa continued, "He's a big part of our game and there's a lot of people pulling for him. Everybody has had that big celebrity owner, but none of them were students of the game like David Cassidy. I guarantee you if he had the opportunity to trade places with me and train horses, he would have given up music to be a horse trainer. He just loved [the sport]. He is just one of those really amazing guys who dedicated so much of his day and his life to racing." Cassidy won many stakes races as an owner/breeder. He also campaigned In Neon (Ack Ack) to 1998 Broodmare of the Year honors. "We'd go to the races in Saratoga and spend time together, it was fantastic being around him," said Arthur Silvera, who also trained horses for Cassidy. "It shocked me how much he knew about the sport of horse racing. At first, I thought he was this movie-star actor that was testing the horse racing game, but he knew so much about the sport." Waldorf Farm operator Dr. Jerry Bilinski, who also owns the Chatham Small Animal Hospital in Chatham, New York, also knows Cassidy. The entertainer donated his time to the Chatham Hospital's annual fundraiser. "He loved the farm, he loved horses and he and I would go riding on occasion," Bilinski said. "I think it was a point in time where he could get away from the hustle and bustle of being a rock star. He had a number of broodmares here. My wife Darlene and I and Gary Contessa and his wife Jenn are good friends of his. I met him through Kenny Noe, the former Chairman at the New York Racing Association. Growing up in New York, Cassidy was introduced to Thoroughbred horse racing by one of his grandfathers. "From the time I was five until I was 11, I grew up with him," Cassidy said of his grandfather in a 2009 interview. "He took me to the races when I eight or nine years old and he would follow it. I remember watching television with him when the was on. It was a really interesting environment. He was a fantastic person, not a wealthy man by any stretch of the imagination. He would give me a couple of dollars to bet and I did pretty well. I liked handicapping. He taught me how to read the Daily Racing Form. I think a lot of it is when you take your son or your grandson to a baseball game, you have those memories." FRANKLIN CUMMINGS PASSES AWAY

Cummings with Josh and Brad Weisbord in the 1990s Longtime Thoroughbred Daily News team member Franklin Cummings died Friday after a brief illness. He was 74 years old. Known as the TDN transportation secretary for generations of employees, Cummings started his career at the company as a driver in the early 1980s at Executive Bloodstock and served the TDN family for over 30 years. A former driver for the Peter Pan bus company, Cummings was born June 14, 1943 in Fulton, Mississippi. AHe was the biggest, warmest person anyone ever met,@ said Barry Weisbord. AEverywhere he went, he made friends and people said what a gentlemen he was. He was loyal to the company, to me, and to my family.@ AFor years, Franklin was my family=s regular ride to the airport for business trips and vacations,@ said Sue Finley. AAs he sped along at 80 miles-per-hour, never once getting a ticket, I loved listening to his observations about humanity. When Newark Airport underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation to redo the entrance ramps, ending with almost exactly what they had started with, Franklin would drive up to the airport and muse that the person behind the project would never have to work again after such a massive public scam. `Whoever came up with this idea is sitting down right now,= he=d say. I never once saw him in a bad mood, and he ended virtually every sentence he ever uttered with a gigantic laugh.=@ Cummings enjoyed traveling, with Alaska, Hawaii and Scottsdale, Arizona among his favorite destinations. He is survived by four siblings: Clytee Miller, Chalmers (Anne Lou) Cummings, Jr., Agnew (Ester) Cummings, and Agnes Lee. Frank is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who loved him dearly. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, at Central Baptist Church, 166 W 92nd St., New York, New York. The viewing will be at 10:30 a.m., with the service to follow at 11:30 a.m.

PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: PERSIAN KNIGHT NO NAY NEVER COLT TOPS by Andrew Caulfield GOFFS NOVEMBER DAY ONE Almost exactly 30 years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Japan as a guest of the JRA, to report on the Japan Cup and international jockeys= series. Because of my interest in bloodstock, I was also treated to a tour of the stallion farms on Hokkaido. The vast majority of the stallions I saw were imports, including the Derby heroes Grundy and Empery and the Irish Derby winner Tyrnavos. Other notables included Northern Taste, a Prix de la Foret winner who had become the dominant force in Japanese breeding, and Linamix=s classic-winning sire Mendez. Then there were the likes of Junius (Middle Park S.), Pas de Seul (Prix de la Foret), No Lute (Prix Lupin), Gay Mecene (Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud), Saint Estephe (Coronation Cup) and Crystal Glitters (twice a winner of the Prix d=Ispahan). Pedigree Insights: Persian Knight Cont. It was a similar situation here in Europe. The top 20 on the 1987 Anglo-Irish table featured 11 stallions carrying the (USA) suffix and another from Canada, with the American-breds Mill Reef, Riverman, Nureyev, Alleged and Be My Guest occupying five of the top six places. Despite their birth place, all five of these stallions had done their racing in Europe and they demonstrate how breeders worldwide usually prefer to use stallions which have proved themselves under local conditions. American-bred stallions are few and far between on this year=s leading sires= list in Britain and Ireland, the highest-ranked being War Front in 14th place. The Japanese industry has gone very much the same way, thanks largely to the remarkable . This American-bred transformed the Japanese thoroughbred to such an extent that his sons still occupy seven of the top 12 places on the current sires= table. In fact, there are only three stallions in the top 20 who did their racing outside Japan (although the likes of King Kamehameha, Kurofune, South Vigorous, Kinshasa No Kiseki and Symboli Kris S. were conceived or foaled elsewhere). The few exceptions in the top 20 include 13th-ranked Empire Maker (now back in the U.S.) and 20th-ranked Sinister Minister. These two, together with the American-breds Kurofune and South Vigorous, owe their high positions largely to their Japanese dirt runners.

Harbinger romps in the G1 King George | Racing Post

The only European interloper among the top 20 is the British-bred , who will always be best remembered for his imperious 11-length victory over Cape Blanco in the 2010 King George. That performance--on his first appearance at Group 1 level--was a marked step up on Harbinger=s previous form, even though he had won the G3 Gordon S. at three and was unbeaten in three previous appearances at four. Pedigree Insights: Persian Knight Cont. Timeform considered his King George display to be worthy of a rating of 140, which put him among some very select company, and Harbinger was officially rated the best horse in the world. Unfortunately, within weeks, Harbinger had fractured his near-fore cannon bone and his career was over before he had had a chance to confirm his superstar status. By early September the son of had been sold to the Shadai Group. Shadai=s interest in Harbinger no doubt owed a lot to the farm=s need to find a suitable outcross for the legions of Japanese mares descending from Sunday Silence. The ploy seems to be working. Harbinger=s first runners reached the track in 2014, when he became Japan=s leading first-crop sire. Since then has quickly established himself among the leading sires. Despite having 223 runners, compared to King Kamehameha=s 569, Harbinger reached 16th place on the 2015 sires= table and he progressed to 13th place last year. Now he is up to eighth and a highly-rewarding autumn has shown he can sire Group 1 winners--not once, not twice but three times. The first to hit the heights was Deirdre, who in mid-October landed the mile-and-a-quarter , the last leg of the so-called Triple Tiara. In an 18-runner field, Harbinger was also responsible for the third-placed Mozu Katchan. This filly, who had finished second in the Japanese Oaks, turned the tables on Deirdre when they met again in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over an extra furlong. This time Mozu Katchan came out best in a three-way finish. Then, a week later, Harbinger=s son Persian Knight came out on top in another tight finish, this time in the G1 . Persian Knight clearly isn=t short of speed, even though he had tackled Japan=s 2000 Guineas and Derby equivalents over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half earlier in the year. Cont. p6

Pedigree Insights: Persian Knight Cont. Persian Knight also has a second dam by Nureyev, namely the Harbinger sired Deirdre from a granddaughter of Sunday three-time French winner Nikiya.
