2008 Northeast Conference Championship Lock Haven Downs Rider, 3-0, for Third Straight NEC Title

Lock Haven, PA -- Lock Haven’s Casey Hughes (Schwenksville, PA/ Souderton) entered the 2008 NEC Field Hockey Tournament with one 2008 NEC Field Hockey Championship goal on the season. Two days and two goals later, Hughes and her teammates Lock Haven, PA (Charlotte E. Smith Field) are league champions for the third consecutive season. In a rematch of November 7 and 8 last year’s championship match, top-seeded Lock Haven defeated No. 2 Semifinals Rider, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field to capture the Friday, November 7 NEC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. No. 2 Rider 2, No. 3 Sacred Heart 0 No. 1 Lock Haven 4, No. 4 Quinnipiac 1 The Lady Eagles (19-3, 7-0 NEC) travel to champion American for the NCAA Opening Round on Tuesday. The Broncs (13-7, Championship 6-1 NEC) have been the NEC runner-up three times since last winning the Saturday, November 8 No. 1 Lock Haven 3, No. 2 Rider 0 conference crown in 2004.

Just as she did in yesterday’s 4-1 semifinal victory over No. 4 Quinnipiac, Tournament MVP Blair Wynne (Lock Haven), Sr., F Hughes opened the scoring in Saturday’s title bout. She ripped a shot past Rider goalie Lyndsie Johnson (Gibbsboro, NJ/Eastern) on penalty corner, one of the Haven’s nine on the day, in the 11th minute. Sophomore back Alanna Lewis (Trinidad & Tobago/Southeast Port-of-Spain) and junior back Emma Wessner (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) earned assists on the play.

Lock Haven sophomore Amy Hordendorf (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) added her league-leading 21st goal of the season 14 minutes later to double the Lady Eagles’ lead at 2-0 heading into the break. The ball was driven into the circle off another penalty corner and deflected off a mix of sticks before Hordendorf managed to tuck it in across the goal mouth.

Rider’s defense was sharp in Friday’s semifinal shutout of third-seeded Sacred Heart, but the Broncs surrendered two goals in the opening half of a game for first time since a 3-2 non-conference loss at Temple on September 28. Rider surrendered only two goals to NEC opponents all season heading into Saturday’s championship tilt, and held Lock Haven scoreless throughout regulation when the two sides played an overtime game in the regular season.

Broncs’ sophomore defender Margaret Ecke (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt), a second team all-NEC selection, continued her strong play into the tournament, adding NEC all-Tournament Team honors to her growing resume.

Johnson, who posted five shutouts in NEC regular season play and another in the Broncs’ semifinal win, and freshman forward Virginia Egusquiza (Gexto, Spain/Extracto del Expediente) joined Ecke on the all-tournament squad. Egusquiza, who scored on a penalty corner against Sacred Heart, took three of Rider’s five shots against Lock Haven.
