Their motto is a “hands-on, feet-wet education.” At the ecology-based camp, young- sters study coastal mammals, explore beaches and take part in research, whether it’s measuring baby toads or collecting wayward boardwalk balloons that have washed up on the beach so researchers can determine their effect on wildlife, said Anne Armstrong, edu- cation program manager. New this year to the camp, which has been operating at least 20 years, is a three-day camp for children 8 or 9 years old “to give them a taste” of what the weeklong sessions can offer, she said. They explore the beach and learn about marine life during the day and at night participate in traditional camp ac- tivities such as a campfire and s’mores. Parents are also given the chance to go to camp, Armstrong said. Family camps are held over Memorial Day and Labor Day, with kayaking and canoeing added to the fun of searching for the wild ponies of Assateague Island. As a youngster, Armstrong said, “I went to a YMCA camp, which was a little more traditional, but they were two of the most memorable weeks of my summer.” COURTESY OF GENESEE VALLEY OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER ‘Technology Tapas’ Sue Cusick has been summer pro- gram coordinator for Summer at Friends since 1982 and said with a laugh that she had never been a camper Daily Record Staff as a child, acknowledging she’s making up for it now, however. How parents decide which sports camp is right for their child

BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE Special to The Daily Record

Do your children love one sport and excel in it, or do they enjoy a variety? That’s a question parents may want to think hard about when choosing a sports camp. One plus to a single-sport camp: more individual instruction. At least, that’s the view of Matt Cook, marketing director for Adidas Tennis Camps, which will be hosting a tennis camp in Towson this summer and a softball camp on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus. “You can work on fundamentals all day long,” he said. At a typical softball camp, a camper will work on individual and fundamen- tal skills during the morning session and move on to a team scrimmage in the afternoon at which additional fun- damentals will be addressed, Cook said. Another camp company, Sports In- ternational, hosts three different foot- ball camps at McDaniel College in West- minster: a general football camp, a passing and receiving academy and a kicking, punting and long snapper camp. The camps focus only on football, and players will get instruction on their specific positions, said Brandon Rollins, Sports International’s regional market- ing director. One side note, worth stressing: With a strong focus on safety, the camp does not have full tackle. COURTESY OF ADIDAS TENNIS CAMPS “You get great training and have a great experience,” Rollins said. Campers’ skills improve, he said, “and their love for the game improves.” Level of instruction Single-sport camps typically have instructors who have played or are cur- rently playing at high levels of their sport, including college and profes- sional. “Your instruction is going to be bet- ter,” Cook said. His concern with mul- ti-sport camps: instructors who may not have a full background in all of the sports they are teaching. Besides having high school and col- lege coaches, Sports International’s camp has visits from NFL players. Rollins says the players “are great with COURTESY OF ADIDAS TENNIS CAMPS COURTESY OF ADIDAS TENNIS CAMPS the kids,” and the kids love being taught by them.
