YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 4 LAKESIDE HAVEN Our respite and recovery retreat was held twice this year. 20 women and 42 children rebuilding their lives in second-stage housing were able to spend a healing weekend on the lake with relaxation, adventure, games, good food, and campfire sing-a-longs. Registered Psychologists were onsite at the retreats for any who wished to access them.

Going to sleep that night after the evening campfire, I “ could hear my children whispering and laughing in the dark. I couldn’t remember the last time I heard them talking together. I smiled and felt a huge weight lift off of my shoulders. I knew we were going to be alright. ” - A mom attending Lakeside Haven Healing Retreat

5 YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 DISABILITY SERVICES DISABILITY SERVICES YWCA Disability Services is recognized as an outstanding service provider. We believe that a holistic approach to care and creating inclusive communities allows those with disabilities to reach their goals. Our Disability Services team has 185 adults and children with disabilities carefully matched with loving support homes and caring families who view our individuals as family members. Our Community Support Workers provided more than 86,000 hours of respite and relief inside family homes or in the communities of those caring for a loved one with a disability. Additionally, we provided more than 3,500 full days of service matching clients with weekend host families, giving respite to our families.

A PATH TO INDEPENDENCE. Jared* has been with YWCA Disability Services in a support home for over a decade. It was always one of Jared’s goals to live independently. We believe in a holistic approach to care that allows those with disabilities to reach their goals. Through guidance and support from his provider over the years, Jared worked hard to prepare for transition to independent living. This meant learning life skills like grocery shopping, budgeting, paying bills, household maintenance, and much more. Once Jared felt he was ready, they worked together to find a place in the community that would fit his needs, was affordable, and close to his place of employment. This December, after years of hard work and learning, Jared moved into his own place, and for the first time in his life, he is living independently. Jared is doing wonderfully. He’s looking into taking courses at MacEwan University, and getting a driver’s license. He’s happy at his job, is getting familiar with his community, and is building relationships with his new neighbours. His support home provider now visits him once a week for a few hours only, to take him out in to the community. We are so thrilled to see Jared achieve his long term goal, and we look forward to supporting him as he achieves his next milestone. - Tifffany Pye, Service Coordinator, Disability Services.

YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 6 GIRLSPACE

GIRL EMPOWERMENT YWCA Edmonton’s vision is a world of equality, opportunity, and choice for women. In order for women to attain this vision, they need to get the best start possible. GirlSpace is a YWCA program offered free of charge for girls aged 11-15 that provides a safe place to ask important questions, learn critical thinking skills, and support one another. The program reduces the risk of violence in girls’ lives, improves their mental health, and sets the stage for their development into strong, healthy, young women leaders. In 2014, 53 girls completed the 18-week program. GirlSpace provides a safe and welcoming setting for girls to discuss and explore difficult issues such as healthy relationships, bullying, imposed gender roles, budgeting, physical and mental health, decision making, and body image. Each session is facilitated by young female volunteer mentors. Several of our girls asked for support beyond GirlSpace. We were able to help them access community referrals as well as services from the YWCA Counselling Centre.

I always thought I was the only girl who felt she “wasn’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. Now, I know that I am enough and I can be anything I want to be. But the best part of GirlSpace? I met my best friend. We go through the hard times together now.” - GirlSpace participant

7 YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 8 THE POWER OF BEING A GIRL® CONFERENCE

In February, 2014 183 junior high school girls from Edmonton and the surrounding area attended the 6th annual Power of Being a Girl® Conference held at MacEwan University City Centre Campus. They spent a full day rotating through interactive educational sessions on topics like internet safety, mental health, and teamwork. The girls also had the opportunity to speak to 16 different organizations about services offered for girls and potential volunteer experiences.

9 YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 RBC Gold Medal Paralympian Viviane Forest spoke to our girls, encouraging them to see barriers as opportunities. CTV’s Carrie Doll came in to talk about goals and passions; taking the girls through a journaling exercise with the new journals they received for attending the conference.

YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 10 11 YWCA Edmonton ANNUAL REPORT 2014 YOWOCHAS

YOWOCHAS OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE YWCA Edmonton has been offering camping programs on the shores of beautiful Lake Wabamun since 1916 and is highly regarded as one of ’s finest summer camps and outdoor education centres. In 2014, YoWoChAs hosted more than 800 summer campers and more than 4800 visitors throughout the year. Thanks to the support of the community we were able to subsidize camp for 45 children from low income families. Many school and team building groups made use of our beautiful waterfront, natural setting, and challenging adventure course. New for 2014: we offered Summer Day Camp and had 125 campers participate.

A PLACE TO BE A HERO It was early August, and I sat at the lunch table with one of our young Discoverer campers on a hot Wednesday afternoon in the dining hall. I noticed that he was wearing a superhero cape for the third day in a row, and that today was a different cape. I said: “I really like your cape today, is it different than the one you were wearing yesterday?” The young boy replied “Yes, I brought three capes with me to camp!” Smiling, I said “You know, it’s not superhero week, why did you bring so many capes?” He looked at me very seriously and said “Because camp is the only place I can wear my capes and not get made fun of. I have a very special cape I‘m saving for the last day.” My heart clenched and my eyes welled with tears. I turned to him and said “I am so happy that you get to be yourself here at camp. I’m looking forward to seeing the cape you saved for last.” His smile made the rest of my day. – Terry Konyi a.k.a. ‘T-Rex’, Director, YoWoChAs Outdoor Education Centre
