Karen Marchant - Rushmoor Royals Masters Discipline Secretary Hampshire ASA Contributions and feedback to the editor please: I am looking for someone to take over from me following the Inter County Championships in November 2016. The management committee has agreed that the prospective successor can start shadowing me as of now (You may attend management Meetings with me but won’t be entitled to vote) I will organise the Inter County Team in 2016 but ideally my successor will shadow and support me so they’re not thrown in at the deep end in 2017

I’m not leaving the country so will be very happy to offer any assistance until you have found your feet. I most certainly will not interfere!

I have drawn up a role descriptor; if you are interested then please do get in touch with me. This is purely a voluntary role though you will be paid mileage for attending management meetings (this includes the 2 x South East Region ones) You can also claim a small amount for Office expenses.

The newsletter and records are initiatives of mine, you don’t necessarily have to carry on with both. I currently administer the Face Book page; this can be taken over by anyone who is interested OR I’m happy to carry on.

You are expected to attend the County’s management meetings (every other month) these rotate through the days of the week Mons-Thurs; however I have been unable to attend the Monday meetings as I work Monday nights. The meetings take place at Crestwood college, Eastleigh, 19.00-21.00 hrs. The committee is super efficient so there’s no danger of you being there beyond 21.00.

This is your one stop place for Masters related information.

Have you signed up for the newsletter?

Sharon Lock is our Masters officer at the asa and has been working very hard since taking on her role raising the profile of Masters . Sharon has put together a handbook for prospective new Masters and it is very useful even for those established Masters Athletes, it’s very impressive so please take a look.

You may well have seen Sharon competing for Basingstoke Bluefins ladies at local meets (she does keep a low profile on these occasions as she takes her competing very seriously) 12th Mar 2017 16th Royal Navy Open Masters Meet 2017

These are all that are currently listed on the Masters Hub; however meets may well be added each week so please keep checking.

The Inter County Championships will move dates in 2017 to Sunday 12th November. I had a booking at Aldershot Garrison but it is Remembrance Sunday so needless to say I’ve cancelled the booking. Aldershot is ‘The Home of the British Army’ and there will be Church services and parades in the vicinity of the Sport Centre. It has been suggested that the gala start at 14.00 hrs but that would be seriously disadvantage our Channel Island athletes in that they’d be travelling back late in the evening plus the M25/M3 have the potential to be pretty horrible on Sunday evenings.

I have submitted a request to Hart Leisure Centre for a booking on the afternoon of Sunday the 12th November when we’re due to host the Inter County Event, I have heard back from the Management who will “let me know when they’ve decided on the pool programme”.

We can’t host on the South Coast because it’s just too far for athletes in the far east of our region to travel. An outstanding weekend for Hampshire’s athletes.

Individual medal tally

A fantastic set of relay results too given that none of these are Clubs ‘made up’ to win medals at major events. There are sound reasons why such Clubs exist; they do offer an opportunity for individuals to take part in a relay team which would otherwise not exist for them, but………..it is does raise concerns for some.

Master’s competitions aren’t Licensed and there are a lot of reasons why not.

Strokes have to comply regardless of the level of a Meet. ● Butterfly swum with Breaststroke legs would be a reason to disqualify an athlete. ● Single handed backstroke starts would not be permitted. ● Cat 1 athletes would be excluded from Licensed Open Meets. The first 2 reasons alone would exclude a great number of our Masters from competing at a Licensed Meet

● Mixed heats, male and female competitors in the same heat - permitted ● Sessions must not exceed 3.5 hours - how long were the sessions at the Europeans? ● Officials - You would have to guarantee the minimum number of Qualified/licensed Officials. Even if you Licensed a Master’s meet at L4 you would very likely struggle to comply. ● Minimum entry times at L3-L1, how would you set them? ● First come first served applies to Master’s meets this would not be permitted above a L4 because QT’s apply.

These are only a snapshot of the reasons why we don’t License Master’s Meets - you have to agree that the rules would discriminate against Masters.

● You wish to enter your County’s Swimming Championships - how do you achieve the qualifying times? Enter your Club’s Championships; they’ll be Licensed at L4 or 3 and your times will be submitted to the ASA Rankings. You will however have to comply with FINA rules as far as your strokes are concerned i.e no ‘Fly with Breaststroke legs. Once your times are on the ASA’s ranking’s you’ll be able to enter Open Meets you qualify for.

Masters rankings and results - unless you’ve run a Masters Meet with manual timing your results will be submitted to the ASA Master’s rankings and results no questions asked about how well the meet was or wasn’t run.

Want to know more? Download the files from here and all will be explained

I’m not qualified to answer the question - perhaps the introduction of QT’s for 2017’s GB Master’s Championships is a step towards Licensing National events? Assuming of course that a lot of thought is given over to setting the times. No one wants a repeat of the London Europeans.

Ultimately Master’s swimming is about participation and we don’t want to travel down the road of bringing in rules that would exclude a large minority of people.

On a personal note, this question has resulted in my looking at Licensing in more depth. I wouldn’t relish the idea of filling in a License application - venue booking forms are challenging enough. T-30 Challenge The ASA T-30 challenge is a unique and simple event which determines just one thing – who can swim the furthest in 30 minutes!

You don’t have to be a member of the ASA to enter the T-30 Challenge – it’s open to everyone living in Great Britain between 18 and 108 years old.

You can compete in your local pool as an individual or as part of a team with your club mates, friends, family or colleagues.

You could become a national champion for 2016 or compare your achievement against other swimmers Whether you’re trying to beat your own PB, be the best in your county or even the country, it’s the perfect event for setting yourself a quick-swim challenge.

Entries for the 2016 T-30 Challenge opened on Friday 29 April and close at midnight on 31 December 2016. Everything you need to enter will be found below. http://www.swimming.org/masters/t-30-swimming-challenge/

Come on Hampshire Masters - get some teams together, they don’t have to be from one Club, perhaps you could pool talent from a number of Clubs give yourselves some funky names and take part - fun or really competitive; it doesn’t really matter what your motivation is.

The British Swimming Masters Decathlon

The British Swimming Masters Decathlon is a true test of versatility over the course of the season.

Swimmers’ performances from Masters competitions throughout the year are assigned points and each English, Scottish and Welsh swimmer is awarded an overall tally based on their top points scores from 10 of the 18 individual events.

There is no entry fee or registration required – all swims from Masters competitions in the British Swim- ming Masters Rankings database are automatically entered into the competition.

There is no age group split in the Masters Decathlon; instead points are adjusted depending on age to ensure a fair comparison.

Prizes are on offer for the top individual swimmers as well as the top club – click on the link below to find out more about the competition. http://www.swimming.org/masters/british-swimming-masters-decathlon/

How about a Hampshire Master’s Decathlon Champions? I think it’s a great idea I personally don’t have time to do it. Any volunteers?
