Many of us have likely been to a wreath laying ceremony, but never have I seen pictures captured with as much emotion as these of Chief Blackford and Jack Gradolph. We sometimes contemplate about how nice a ceremony was, how respectful, even how well it might adhere to tradition. But while these photos of this laying of a wreath show that, I see these also showing the face of a man doing much more than those things. I see all of his shipmates, in ranks, marching before his eyes as he pays homage to each one. As the horrific events of that day lay hold of his heart and invade his mind and he calls the roll in his heart of his shipmates he lost that day, you can see the Love for ones fellow mariners personally known and unknown, but all shipmates held close to the heart. You even see a small glimpseof the hell and horror that is war. Thank you, Chief Blackford and Jack Gradolph, for setting the standard for us to follow. Greg Plante 9 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROGRAM
