TERESA CATHERINE STAUFFER (FOSTER) – U. S. Army Nurse Corps

Teresa Stau er Foster lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania except for the three years she was in the Army Nurse Corps. Graduating in 1937 from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lancaster, Teresa desired to travel but lacked the money to do it. When she read that the Army would pay $75 a month for a Second Lieutenant and would also provide free food, lodging, and nurse’s uniforms, she enlisted in 1941. A€ er six months, Teresa was able to pick Hawaii as her foreign assignment. was a beautiful tropical island and the nurses enjoyed parties, dining, and travel during their o -time. ings changed dramatically on December 7, 1941. As Teresa walked through the Moana Loa Gardens a Japanese Zero ‚ ew very low over her head! A€ er an oƒ cer on horseback told her about the attack on Pearl Harbor, Teresa returned to Tripler Army Hospital and spent several hours caring for incoming patients until she was required to get some sleep for her night duty. Future attacks were suspected, so the evening of December 7, “blackout” was de„ nitely enforced. Blankets were hung over the windows and ‚ ashlights provided the only illumination. If she ventured outside the hospital, an armed guard would accompany her. Teresa remembered she held a ‚ ashlight as a doctor delivered a baby that evening. Among all this death and destruction, it shows that happiness can also appear. e nurses over the next few weeks worked long hours. Teresa was not able to send a telegram home to her family until three days a€ er the attack. Starting in February 1942, she helped set up a provisional hospital at Kaneohe and Waipahu. By July 1942, life was returning to normal. In August 1942, Teresa was sent to a hospital on Molokai were she was able to take a side trip to visit the isolated Kalaupapa leper colony, and in August 1943 was assigned to Scho„ eld Army Hospital. In December 1943, her military tour ended and she returned to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where she worked at a local hospital, eventually becoming the night nursing supervisor. In 1991, Teresa joined a local chapter of the PHSA where she enjoyed the local events, and was able to attend two PHSA National Conventions. Teresa died in 1998 at age 82. Reference: Foster, Teresa Stau er (1991), Personal interview Teresa was my mother. She kept a lot of her stories private until 1991 when she met other survivors in the PHSA. I escorted my mother to the 50 th Anniversary in Honolulu, Hawaii and the 51 st Anniversary in Little Rock, Arkansas where I met several of the nurses. For the 75 th Anniversary in December 2016, I was now the “old lady” and my son escorted me.

SDPHS members voted during the 2016 convention in Hawaii to hold the next convention in New Orleans, LA. One of the biggest reasons it was selected was because it is the home of the WWII Museum. e museum encompasses € ve interconnected buildings and tells the story of the American Experience in the war that changed the world. e “Arsenal of Democracy: e Herman and George Brown Salute to the Home Front” in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion starts with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although having planes, , and weapons of WWII, your experience will be through the individual stories of the men and women who fought and won the war. is is a unique perspective not seen in other museums. In addition, we have other activities that will give you a taste of New Orleans and all it has to o er. We have a fun and organized convention planned for all of you!

Make new friends meeting fellow members and guests and hear their connection to Pearl Harbor Survivors. Shop the “Small Stores” for that item to wear or show your pride in your organization!

Dec. 5: Join us for the “Welcome to New Orleans” expertly guided bus tour. Learn about the colorful history, food, and music of “ e Big Easy.” Don’t miss this, you’ll love it! Dec. 6: “Day at the Museum” event. Now that you have learned the history, heard the Jazz, and enjoyed the taste of New Orleans, come with us for a special event created by SDPHS with the help of the WWII Museum. Visit the re- creation of the famous BB’s Stage Door Canteen for a holiday style lunch bu et and live holiday show by the “Victory Belles” (Andrews Sisters) tribute. For some it will be a trip down memory lane to the 1940’s.
