Rabbi Rosenthal’s Message

The Jewish calendar is largely based on phases of the moon. New Jewish months begin on the day after the New Moon phase, when it appears as a thin crescent in the sky. However, because 12 lunar months are 11 days shorter than the solar year, periodically, we add a leap month to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. During this leap year, we have two months of Adar: Adar I and Adar II. This helps to ensure that holidays like which needs to take place in Spring will occur during the correct season. One of the nice aspects of this addition, is that Adar is a month of joy and of celebration, and during this leap year, we have twice as many opportunities to experience and express that joy. Traditionally, Adar is the month we recognize and celebrate the holiday of Purim. While it might be nice to have two Purim celebrations, instead we celebrate Purim in the second month of Adar and add in the holiday of Purim Katan (little Purim) in Adar I. While there is little written about this minor holiday, the of the Mishnah make note that, “There is no difference between the fourteenth of the first Adar and the fourteenth of the second Adar save in the matter of reading the Me- gillah, sending mishloach manot (Purim bags) and gifts to the poor.” During Purim Katan, fasting, eulogies and certain aspects of traditional worship are forbidden. However, it is traditional to mark the day with a small festive meal. So, it’s exactly like Purim without any of the primary rituals we do for Purim: megillah, gift baskets, and helping the poor. What does this leave? Perhaps, as the Rachel Barenblat notes in her blog, The Velveteen Rabbi, there is more to be uncovered. We (Continued on page 4)

Rabbi Moss’ Message

Life is certainly filled with many surprises and some of them can be quite amazing indeed. A few weeks ago I heard Rabbi Adler of Anshei Shalom Synagogue in Delray Beach give an excellent sermon on the reuniting of Jacob and Esau after their many years of estrangement. Toward the end of the sermon he called to the bimah two men, each of whom was into their 90s. The Rabbi then asked them to share their story. The older gentleman (94 years old) then told how one of his granddaughters had signed up for Ancestry.com to find out more about her ethnic background. As some of you know, the program not only sends back to its subscribers a percentage breakdown of his or her ethnicities, but also gives the name, phone number and address of other persons who are close DNA matches. She followed through by getting in touch with the first name which had the potential of highest probability of being a significant match. It turned out this this person was a relative of the man standing along side of him on the bimah, a man he sat next to every Shabbat in Schule. This man turned out to be his half-brother!!! At an early age, these men’s father abandoned their family and apparently started a second family. I also know of a few of our Temple families who have found significant family members they knew nothing about. How truly amazing and what a blessing. The children and grandchildren of both these men will be having a special family get together in February.

Hope everyone had a wonderful beginning to the New Year! Our first event, an Escape Room, was a huge success! Looking forward to doing this event again. Patricia Ellner New Temple Policy Please be aware that the Board of Trustees passed a resolution at its January meeting affecting Temple payment policy for functions, events and items for sale. Effective immediately, fees associated with various Temple activities, such as bus trips, dinners, apparel items and the like, must be paid for in full at the time the reservation or order is placed. When space is available, last minute participants must pay in full "at the door." Cash, check or credit card payment will be accepted, but future billing will no longer be available. This policy will help ensure an accurate count of participants in advance so adequate and cost effective preparations can be made and will simplify and expedite after-the-fact collection of charges.

Rabbi Rosenthal’s Message (continued) could think of Purim Katan as an invitation to think more deeply about what brings us joy in our life, to delve deeper into the story of Purim (as many commentators point out, God is missing from the story), or as an opportunity to bring a little extra joy to the world. This year, Purim Katan falls on Tuesday, February 19th. I encourage you to add a little joy to the day, whether it be through experience, study, food, or time with family and friends. And when our regular Purim celebration comes in March, may we be even more prepared to hear our Megillah chanted, dress in costume, celebrate with a carnival, retell the story through comedy and music, and give the gift of mishloach manot, Purim bags to friends and family. May our two months of Adar bring twice as many opportunities for joyous celebration and perspective.

Rabbi Moss’ Message (continued)

While it is true that all of us are related to each other as part of the larger family of humankind, some of us are related to others in ways we had no idea. I personally think this is quite incredible. It also affirms my value imbedded in our tradition how we must treat every other human being with respect and care. After all, that other person could be our brother, our sister, or maybe even our parent. Be safe and keep warm!

Dollar A Week Club News Our $ A Week Club is doing fine despite the cold temperatures. In fact, many members report that the act of donating to the Temple is actually a warming experience and helps to bring a smile to their faces.

The following individuals and/or families have donated at least 35 times: Alice & Mike Lambert Ethan Mihlstin Rachel Mihlstin Sue & Bob Wiener

The following individuals and/or families have donated at least ten times: Sam Jacobs Roberta Rosen

There are at least 19 people who need to “catch up” to see their names listed here next month.

*Reminder: Be sure to label your donation envelopes clearly with ‘$ A Week’ and with your name clearly printed and the date so we can be sure to credit your donation. President’s Message Paul Weber B'nai Israel NEEDS YOU! Over my past seven months as president, I have heard congregants talk about things that our Temple “should be doing”. We are always open to new ideas and suggestions. We have a number of committees here that would embrace your help! For example, our Ritual Committee does so much for our Temple. They organize and hand out the parts for the High Holy Day services, they planned and shopped for the beautiful Tu B'Shevat seder that we had last week, they are now planning for our Shabbat Across America dinner which will be on March 1, 2019, just to name a few of the many events run by this committee. They could always use an extra hand or two. Our Fundraising Committee runs a lot of events during the year to help keep our costs down. How about giving us a few hours of your time on a Saturday night over the summer? We could really use your help running some of the concession stands at the Ducks games! Other than working with a great group of people and fellow Temple members, you also get to see a spectacular fireworks show!! Fundraising just hosted a sellout Comedy Night at the Temple. If you have a few hours to give to Fundraising, please contact Seth Berman. By joining a Temple committee, you do not have to attend every meeting or event if you don't have the time. You can pick and choose how involved that you want to be. Maybe you just want to lend a helping hand in setting up an event? Maybe you have an idea for a future event that you would like to share? We are always open to new ideas. Other ways to contribute your time and ideas would be to join Sisterhood or Brotherhood. Sisterhood is comprised of a wonderful group of women who do so much for our Temple. Besides the fantastic programs and events that they offer, they work hard and contribute money to pay for some things which help to beautify our Temple. Their hard work is very much appreciated. Our Brotherhood has new leadership and is looking for members to join and share ideas. Their Sunday morning breakfasts are open to men and women. It is a great time to get together and schmooze and listen to one of the interesting guest speakers. They sell wine for Passover and hold football and lottery raffles. They could also use a helping hand. Please consider donating a few hours of your time to one (or more!) of any of the committees or arms of our Temple! Believe me when I tell you that you will get more out of it than you realize. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the wonderful people who serve our Temple and for doing all that you do to help make B'nai Israel an incredible place. Each and every one of you is special. You are a vital and integral part of our Temple family. Shalom, Paul

Dear Sisterhood B’nai Israel,

Thank you for your donation this year. This year we funded 100 people into long-term recovery facilities and supported over 300 families and their loved ones. You have been part of the solution.

We couldn’t have done it without you.

Annual NYC Jewish Cultural Tour Please join Rabbis Moss and Rosenthal on B’nai Israel’s Annual NYC Cultural and Eating Trip. The date is Sunday April 14th. Yes, it is the Sunday prior to Passover which begins on Friday night, but this is a wonderful way to begin to focus on what being Jewish means especially in light of the beautiful customs of our wonderful holiday. We are leaving the Temple at 8 am sharp. The first stop will be Yonah Schimmel’s Knishery on Houston Street. We will then go a short distance for a tour of the famous tenement museum. Our group will be split into 2 groups. Each group will experience one of the following tours: SWEATSHOP WORKERS: Pay a visit to the Levine family’s garment workshop and the Rogarshevsky’s Sabbath table at the turn of the 20th century, when the Lower East Side was the most densely populated place in the world. Explore how immigrants balanced work, family, and religion at a time of great change. HARD TIMES: Discover how immigrants survived economic depressions at 97 Orchard Street between 1863 and 1935. Visit the restored homes of the German-Jewish Gumpertz family, whose patriarch disappeared during the panic of 1873, and the Italian-Catholic Baldizzi family, who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Rabbis will then lead a walking tour of the Lower East Side before heading off to Edison NJ for a late lunch in Harold’s amazing New York Deli Restaurant. The cost, less the Harold’s meal, is $50 which includes one knish (additional can be ordered), entrance into the museum, and bus. Reserve your seats as they will go fast.

Payment must be included with reservation. Congratulations to all of the winners of the Monday Night Football boxes! If you didn’t win this year, next year is (almost) guaranteed! And for those who purchased Super Bowl boxes - good luck! Our next Brotherhood breakfast will be on Sunday, March 24TH at 9:30 a.m. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Felicia Pasculli, a partner of the firm Futterman, Lanza & Pasculli L.L.P. She will be here to discuss Elder Law and Estate Planning. Some of the topics to be discussed include Advanced Directives, Preserving Assets, Estates, Trusts and Veterans Benefits. Please join us for breakfast and a truly informative discussion that will be very worthwhile.

If you plan to attend the breakfast please RSVP by contacting the Temple office. We want to make sure we purchase enough breakfast for those who plan to attend.

First Night Passover Seder Dear Friends, B’nai Israel is pleased to once again be sponsoring a Passover Seder. We hope you are available to join us for B’nai Israel’s 1st Night Passover Seder and Dinner on Friday, April 19, 2019. The evening will begin promptly at 7:00 with a full ritual Seder (charosis, bitter herbs, matzoh, wine, grape juice, etc.) We will be using “Woodbury Kosher Caterers,” and the dinner meal will be absolutely delicious! It will include chopped liver, stuffed cabbage, roasted chicken, brisket, potato kugel, broccoli soufflé, sweet potato pie, and mushroom farfel. We will conclude with songs, Passover desserts, candy, tea and coffee. This year, in order to avoid a last minute influx of attendees, we will once again have a special “EARLY BIRD COST” limited to Temple affiliates and their guests of $49.50 per person (paid in full) by March 1st. After that, the price for Temple affiliates and all community members will be $57.50 per person from March 2nd to March 18th. The last minute cost, if there’s still room, will be $67.50 per person. The cost for children under 13 will be $30.00 through March 1st, $35.00 from March 2nd to March 18th, and $40.00 after that, assuming there’s room. Remember, payment in full must be received by the Temple office by the cut-off dates in order to guarantee the lowest cost to you. Last year, we were at maximum occupancy, so make your reservations early and hopefully we will be able to accommodate all who wish to celebrate with us. We must have a minimum of 80 people.

Sincerely, Rabbi Steven Moss
