Hello Hinson Hurricane Families,

It’s hard to believe that we’re in the second quarter of the school year already and approaching the final segment of the first semester. These final weeks should be exciting and fun times as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday and winter break to spend time with family and friends plus relax on some needed vacations. Let’s not forget our eighth graders as they spend time on the Washington, D.C. trip in December to just have fun and enjoy all the sights and information they will obtain.

Nevertheless, we must remain focused on the task at hand every day for our students to be successful. We believe that every student here at David C. Hinson Sr. Middle School should be given the opportunity to reach their highest potential, and we as the adults must provide that extra boost they need to achieve. We should give encouraging remarks and provide help when needed to a student.

Therefore, our students should focus on completing assignments and preparing for those major exams that are coming up before the close of the semester. We as adult must remember these are our students capable of mastering great things and greet them with a smile and lift them up when they achieve. Hurricanes don’t forget the upcoming dates for our music department because we don’t want to miss out on seeing and cheering for our students as they express their musical talents in band, chorus, and orchestra.

Remember parents it’s never too early to start thinking about getting your sons or daughters in shape for the girls and boys basketball team tryouts that will take place in the spring. Start making plans to get their physicals appointment scheduled maybe during the winter break while they’re out or the coming months. If they completed a physical since July, they do not need to take another one.

It has been and continues to be a privilege to be an assistant principal at such a wonderful school and community, and I’m looking forward to the second semester of this school year.

Go Canes,

Ron Dickens

Assistant Principal

Red Week Fun! During the week of October 27th through November 1st, Hinson students celebrated Red Ribbon Week. It first began in 1985 when Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, was tortured and killed. People in his community wore red to honor him and the message he spread. In 1988 the National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Week. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. To take part in this important event, our students took part in dress up days to spread the messages about drugs and what they can do. Monday was wear red, Tuesday was squad day, Wednesday was wear neon, Thursday was wear black and orange, and Friday was wear your favorite sports team shirt or jersey. Students truly had a lot of fun with these and celebrated an important event. Here are some pictures from throughout the week. By Kayla Lancing

Hinson’s Music Department Lock-in

The lock in was held on October 25th in the cafeteria, and the turnout was great! There were many people who came out to join the fundraiser to raise money to repair/replace instruments. Because Halloween was coming up, students were able to dress up. There were many fun things to do like games, video games, and karaoke! There was also a food bar with pizza and sweets. On October 23rd Hinson participated in Unity Day. This is a day to make students aware of bullying and to promote taking a stand against it. Orange is the color that represents unity. To show that Hinson wants to help prevent bullying, students were asked to pay a dollar to wear orange. Students also received a sticker and signed a pledge. All proceeds benefit the Special Olympics team here at Hinson. Below are pictures of some of our hurricanes who are taking a stand against bullying. By: Peyton Domayer

Shoshana Ravede- Go Girl Go!

Have you ever wished there was a book written about you? This is a reality for one of our Hurricanes. The name of this wonderful student is Shoshana Ravede. An author named Lynn Hawkins became inspired by this fantastic, young lady and wrote a book called “Go Girl Go”. According to Hawkins, Shoshana doesn’t know the word quit. She enters a lot of races and wins every one of them-even when she comes in last. For a girl who learned to walk only with braces when she was 5, every race is a milestone. Every challenge she meets, despite a number of physical handicaps, just gives her goals to reach. Shoshana even received the Live Justice ! Shoshana has many friends that she runs with on Hinson’s very own cross-country team. Her friends always mention how kind and what a hard worker she is. Shoshana Ravede is truly an amazing girl.

Subject: Early Dismissal/Check-Out Procedure Dear Parents and/or Guardians:

The education, safety and well-being of each student attending David C. Hinson Sr. Middle School is our top priority. To assist us with early check outs please make note of the following:

 We ask that you please send a note in with your child stating the time that they will be checked out and who will be picking them up. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached. This note should be turned in to their grade office before reporting to 1st period.

 If you’re checking out your child during PE class we suggest that your child should NOT dress out. If possible, please do not plan on checking your student out during PE if you did not send in a note. Once students are dressed out for this class the time involved in getting your student back into the locker room to change clothes can be quite lengthy.

 Also, please do not plan on checking your student out during the last 15 minutes of the day because this is a very busy time in the front office and making sure all of our students get home correctly is the priority at that time.

 Please be patient. It could take up to 30 minutes to get your student depending on the class he or she is in and any items he or she may need to get before coming to the office. We appreciate your consideration and understanding regarding the aforementioned policy items.
