8 What is lock bumping?

Lock bumping is a popular technique used by criminals to open cylinder locks using a specially designed key called a bump key.

The bump key is placed into a keyhole, pulled back one notch or click, and then struck firmly with a heavy object such as a hammer. This method causes the pins within the cylinder to vibrate up and down, tricking it into opening as it thinks the correct key has been inserted.

The problem:

Many new cylinders have anti-bump features built into them; however there are still a lot of homes that rely on standard budget cylinders which have little or no protection!

The massive problem with this – apart from burglars being able to gain entry into homes – is that it is very difficult to determine whether a house has been broken into via lock bumping due to lack of forensics. Goods may have been taken from the house but there is no damage to the door and no fingerprints have been left behind!

Due to this lack of evidence, insurance companies often refuse to pay out compensation. With no sign of forced entry they believe that the door has simply been left unlocked and the insurance policy becomes void. The solution?

Pickbuster®! Sometimes you’ll encounter a customer who doesn’t want to upgrade their locks or simply cannot afford to. This is where Pickbuster® comes in! It has been designed to be a cheap upgrade to existing cylinder locks, protecting them from lock bumping.

9 How does it work?

Pickbuster® is very easy to install and is a simple, cost effective and long lasting alternative to your customers upgrading their existing locks.

A high tack lubricant is applied into the cylinder via the key entrance, coating the pins inside. Once applied the lubricant needs to be left for around four to five hours so it can be absorbed by the mechanism.

Once dry the Pickbuster® lubricant absorbs the force from the bump key during lock bumping.

As the pins in the cylinder don’t vibrate as much, it can no longer be tricked into opening! What’s in the pack?

11 How to Set Up Your Google Account

Google accounts are really useful. One free account gets you into everything Google – you can use it for Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Play Store, Chrome, Drive and Google+!

1. First go to https://accounts.google.com/SignUp

2. If you already have a Google account you can click ‘Sign In’ at the top right of the screen and skip to the next part of the guide which is on page 14.

If not, fill out your details and click ‘Next step’. 3. The ‘Privacy and Terms’ box will appear. Read the ‘Privacy and Terms’ and click ‘I AGREE’ at the bottom.

12 4. A welcome screen will appear. Click ‘Continue’.

5. That’s your Google account set up!

6. At the top right of the webpage there is a toolbar. You’ll use this to access applications (such as Google+ which is in the next part of the guide), check your notifications and edit your account.

7. If you click on the circle in the toolbar you will see the following. Here you can access your account settings, change your profile photo and sign out. To change your profile photo select ‘Change’ on the larger circle. To view and change your account settings and tools click ‘My Account’.

8. Here you can control, protect and secure your account all in one place!

9. You’ve successfully created a Google account! Now to get your business on Google+ with its own Brand Account!

13 How to set up a Brand Account for your Business on Google+

1. Go to https://plus.google.com/discover

2. In the top right hand corner click the ‘Sign In’ button.

3. On the bottom left of the screen select ‘Brands’.

You will be presented with this screen:

Select ‘CREATE GOOGLE+ PAGE’.

4- Enter you Brand Account name and click ‘Create’.

14 5. The ‘Enable Google+ for your brand’ screen will appear. Click ‘ENABLE’.

You’ll see this notification pop up at the bottom left of the screen whilst your Google+ is being created for your brand.

Click ‘CONTINUE’. You’ve created a Google+ account for you brand!

6. At the top toolbar there will be a circle. Click this and then click on the large circle.

7. Here you can edit the content that will show on your brands Google+ page. That includes images, brand name, contact information, website etc.

15 8. Select the pencil on the right above your business name. You will then see the following box:

Here you can change your business name and upload your profile and cover image. To upload a profile image click on the camera within the circle, this box will then appear:

Click on ‘Upload photo’ and select one from your computer. Photos must be 250 x 250 pixels. Alternatively you can drag and drop images into this box.

Click the camera on the top right of the box to upload a cover image. It’s the same upload process as before, but this image should ideally be 1080 x 608 pixels.

Once you have uploaded your images click ‘OK’.

9. Next click on the pink button with a plus on on the bottom right of your screen:

The following box will appear where you can add contact information for your business, website and a business story.

Once you have filled out all of this information make sure it is public. If it has a padlock on it like the information to the side it is private:

17 10. On the toolbar on the top of the page click on the icon that looks a bit like a Rubik’s cube, you will then see the following:

Click on ‘Google+’.

11. This is your brands Google+ profile, as you have added some images and information it will look like the following:

12. In order to add posts, images and videos to your page, press the red button in the right hand corner:

This will bring up a text box where you can add images, links, locations and videos etc.:

To make your profile look interesting and to show potential customers that you are very busy and offer a variety of services, we recommend that you add posts which include pictures and videos of the different products and services you offer! Don’t forget to tag your location if you’re out on a job!

If you have made a mistake on your post, or want to delete it, you can do so by clicking the 3 dots at the top of the post:

This will allow you to edit or delete the post, there are also other options such as disabling comments or disabling reshares – which won’t allow people to share the post.

Yes you read that right! FREE advertising…

But what’s the catch?

We’ve been heavily advertising the new app – this included running a 10 second TV advert throughout December and January to over 7 million people across the UK! Channels it aired on include:

How do I get my company listed?

Getting your company listed is quick, easy and best of all it’s FREE! All you have to do is visit www.tradelocks.co.uk and register for a free trade account.

All we need is a bit of information from you, including: your company name, contact details and the locksmith services you offer. There are ﬁve different services you can select – and you can tick as many services that apply to you as you want!

When you have ﬁlled out all of your details, click the register button. Your application for a trade account will then be manually checked by a member of the TradeLocks team, and once you have been approved you will receive a welcome email and will be automatically added to the Find a Locksmith app – it’s that simple!

25 How do I update my details?

If you’re a member of a locksmith association you can tick the box and ﬁll out the association name and your membership number for veriﬁcation. If you are a member of more than one association you can add the additional associations by clicking the ‘+Add a new association button’.

Unless you’re a member of the Master Locksmith Association (MLA), the most important section to ﬁll out is the training courses you have attended.

In this section you can ﬁll out who the course was organised by, what the course topic was, date of the course and upload your training certiﬁcate. Again, if you have attended multiple courses, you can click the ‘+Add a new course’ button and add as many courses as you wish.

Once you’ve completed each section click the pink ‘Submit Application’ button. Your application will then be reviewed by a member of the TradeLocks team. If they have any questions about your application they will contact you for clariﬁcation.

Once you have been veriﬁed you will be a ‘TL Approved’ member! You will then be able to see:
