We have enjoyed a pretty decent year: new membership applications should exceed 850; we have delivered a good programme of range improvements at Bisley; and we are making decent progress expanding our efforts in the regions. However, many challenges remain. We need to be ever more attentive to the threats of both deliberate and unintended moves to restrict our rights and entitlements to own firearms and shoot responsibly. I am firmly of the opinion that we need to promote what we do – I am genuinely proud of the safety records, our innovative training programmes and the discipline and rigour practised on firing points on hundreds of ranges across the UK. Sharing images and reports of meetings and events helps demystify and promote the many faces of target shooting. Social media has been a key vehicle in this work; our weekly Facebook reach has peaked at over 300,000 and we now have 18,400 ‘likes’. Social media is a hungry beast and, while free to use, demands significant resources to deliver interesting content. As the ranges quieten down for the deep winter we are cracking on with a number of developments. Winans range will be upgraded to provide a full calibre 25m No Danger Area range; turfing contractors will be busy improving firing points at 300/600 yards (Century) and 1,000/1,100/1,200 yards (Stickledown); and we are counter the regular assertions that FAC and SGC holders should pay working through detailed testing of a variety of electronic targets more for their certificates. for Stickledown range. • Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths.

  • Opinion Talk Radio Is Turning Million...Nto Conservatives
https://nyti.ms/2SFJqYc Talk Radio Is Turning Millions of Americans Into Conservatives The medium is at the heart of Trumpism. By Paul Matzko Dr. Matzko is the author of “The Radio Right: How a Band of Broadcasters Took on the Federal Government and Built the Modern Conservative Movement.” Oct. 9, 2020 At least 15 million Americans every week tune into one of the top 15 talk radio programs. They are not monolithically conservative, but they are overwhelmingly so. A dozen of the top 15 shows feature conservative or libertarian hosts — with devoted followings like Rush Limbaugh’s “Dittoheads” or Michael Savage’s “Savage Nation” — and only one leans left. Talk radio may face an aging audience, a decline in ad revenue and competition from new mass media forms like podcasts, but there are still millions of Americans whose politics are shaped by what they listen to on talk radio all day, every day. Fox News gets more of the attention for shaping conservative opinion and for its influence on the Trump administration, but we shouldn’t overlook the power of conservative talk radio. The conservatism of talk radio only partly overlaps with institutional conservatism, that of right-wing Washington think tanks, magazines and the Republican Party itself. By the early 2000s, it had embraced a version of conservatism that is less focused on free markets and small government and more focused on ethnonationalism and populism. It is, in short, the core of Trumpism — now and in the future, with or without a President Trump. Talk radio’s power is rooted in the sheer volume of content being produced each week.

Bauer, and Magda Konieczna Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Table of Contents Executive Summary 3 Introduction 7 Boundaries and Tensions Within the Online Conservative News Field 15 Training, Standards, and Practices 41 Columbia Journalism School Conservative Newswork 3 Executive Summary Through much of the 20th century, the U.S. news diet was dominated by journalism outlets that professed to operate according to principles of objectivity and nonpartisan balance. Today, news outlets that openly proclaim a political perspective — conservative, progressive, centrist, or otherwise — are more central to American life than at any time since the first journalism schools opened their doors. Conservative audiences, in particular, express far less trust in mainstream news media than do their liberal counterparts. These divides have contributed to concerns of a “post-truth” age and fanned fears that members of opposing parties no longer agree on basic facts, let alone how to report and interpret the news of the day in a credible fashion. Renewed popularity and commercial viability of openly partisan media in the United States can be traced back to the rise of conservative talk radio in the late 1980s, but the expansion of partisan news outlets has accelerated most rapidly online. This expansion has coincided with debates within many digital newsrooms. Should the ideals journalists adopted in the 20th century be preserved in a digital news landscape? Or must today’s news workers forge new relationships with their publics and find alternatives to traditional notions of journalistic objectivity, fairness, and balance? Despite the centrality of these questions to digital newsrooms, little research on “innovation in journalism” or the “future of news” has explicitly addressed how digital journalists and editors in partisan news organizations are rethinking norms.

Volume VII, Number 6 Editor: Delmas Gault June 1997 Forget New Taxes and Bonds, all the Government Really Needs is Your Car by Delmas Gault, Editor In a recent issue of Liberty magazine I clipped out a cartoon of a couple sitting at the desk of an IRS auditor. While waving a revolver at them with a 'stick-em up' gesture, the auditor explains that this is the IRS's new tax simplification program! After a brief chuckle, I returned to filling out my '96 return. How comforting - the IRS is allowing me to fork over my share without the added stress of someone waving a revolver in my face. Those guys in IRS Customer Service are really doing a great job. Good news must really travel quickly in the halls of government, however, for I'm seeing a similar program being adopted in California. But here, California is on the cutting edge in customer service. No lengthy forms to fill out. No need to save receipts. We're talking about asset forfeiture. Last year, Smog Check II was released on the drivers of our state. Among the many draconian measures, unregistered vehicles can be pulled from the owners private driveway and demolished for Smog Credits; to be later sold by the city for up to $7000.00 per credit to smoke stack industries eager to alleviate their own pollution problem. The city of San Jose will also ticket the most recent owner for the expense to haul it away and split up the ill-gotten booty. Politicians claimed those measures weren't in the bill and promised never to do it again.
