In 2010-11, a total of 1504 student & staff volunteers from 55 University we love departments were active across ShefFIeld 39 areas of our city through Sheffield Volunteering. Our efforts were recognised with the Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award – a first for any University or Students’ Union.

A NICE TIME ON SATURDAYS (ANTS) ANTS supports children who have experienced the loss of a parent or sibling. ANTS members met together on a monthly basis to spend time with others in similar circumstances.

ENERGISE Eager to share their passion for netball, student volunteers provided opportunities for sport and fitness in an all female environment to women from the Firvale area.

FLOURISH Weekly sessions for adults with an acquired brain injury included activities such as mug painting, photography & baking to encourage people to build on previous skills and re-gain confidence.

SOMETHING INTERESTING FOR BROTHERS & SISTERS (SIBS) Children who have a brother or sister with special needs often feel they have extra family responsibilities. Vvolunteering Raising pupils’ aspirations

This scheme primarily aims to support pupils’ learning and raise aspirations in areas of economic disadvantage and social need but we also encourage students to ‘give something back’ in communities with large student neighbourhoods.

Classroom Mentoring

In primary schools, students volunteered to help improve pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills. In secondary schools, students helped develop subject knowledge and to raise pupils’ attainment. In mainstream and special schools, student mentors also supported pupils with educational or behavioural difficulties and disabilities to improve communication and confidence.

Vvolunteering Engineers Without Borders This outreach project engaged children with the problems facing the world’s developing countries and the ways in which engineers can make a difference. Students helped the pupils explore the potential for using solar energy and to ‘engineer’ and race their own solar powered cars.
