2013 Phoenix Magazine Image Ashburton College Phoenix 2013 Student Executive (L to R): Abbey Marshall (Ball co- chair), Ash McBride (BOT Rep), ASHBURTON Savanna Ornsby (Sports), COLLEGE Hannah Waters (SADD/ PHOENIX 2013 Student Welfare), Kane Olsen (Head Boy), Matt Arnold (Canteen/Environment), VOLUME 49 Finau Fakapelea (Head Girl), Josh Aberhart, Victoria Squires(Treasurer), Elizabeth Hill (Secretary), Ellen Dakers (Ball co-chair) You only need to read the school notices, newsletters, sit in on a house assembly, or a staff briefing to gain an insight into the sheer number of activities and events, academic, sporting and cultural and the like that take place at College. Hopefully this publication captures a fair representation of the year that was at Ashcoll over the past 12 months. Of course, none of these activities would be possible but for the people that offer their time. Similarly, this magazine has been a collaborative effort and I would like to acknowledge the assistance of a number of people in the compilation of these pages. LEADERS & STAFF P2 The first page you are likely to have noticed is the cover and the accolades for this fall to Emily Willis and her stunning interpretation of the school emblem, the Phoenix. Flick to the back cover and the plethora of our wonderful students and you can applaud the efforts of Paige Sheehan. Both students spent a considerable amount of their own time preparing each of the pages and it is much appreciated. Everything else in between these covers can be attributed to an inexhaustive list of people, but one which includes the likes of Sheena Tyrrell, Jenny Crouchley and Anne Sheehan, each of whom showed their administrative prowess and organisational skills. My sincere thanks also go to the large number of staff who have also contributed to Phoenix 2013, including Amanda Grigg and Jemma Tutty for their musings on the comings and goings of staff over the past 12 months. A healthy number of Journalism students PRIZE LISTS & ACHIEVERS P12 also put their hands up in the compilation of articles and the taking of photos and I would like to thank Amber Barrett, Michaela Broomhall, Matt Coote, Greer Hooper, Nikita Kohunui, Amber O’Rourke, Maria Totolici and George Wilson for their efforts. A particular thanks to Head Girl Finau Fakapalea for her initiative and going the extra mile with her contributions. Yet again, College was fortunate to have terrific student leadership in the student executive (pictured above) and the house captains (pictured below). My thanks go to them for their contributions to this magazine and their stellar efforts at AshColl throughout the year. My final thank you is for Paul Johnson at DPI. Once again, his knowledge, keen eye for design and patience has seen this publication come to fruition. Job done. Happy reading and happy holidays. • Applications
applications New Zealand Graduate School of Education is now welcoming applications for the next intake of our two teacher training programmes: • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). The next intake begins on 1 February 2021, and applications close on 19 November 2020. Our highly practical programmes are taught by face-to-face delivery, at our Centre and in schools in greater Christchurch. history of nzgse THE ORIGINS During 1995, three teacher educators together decided there was a need for a high quality alternative to the traditional teacher education programmes. Lois Chick, Kevin Knight and John Langley formed a company to become this new enterprise - New Zealand Graduate School of Education. The vision was that NZGSE would be an exemplar for other training providers: an organisation that would challenge by example the current practices in teacher education. NZGSE was committed from the beginning to preparing teachers who would be academically well qualified, very skilled practitioners, and prepared to demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism in schools. THE MODEL To achieve this goal NZGSE chose a training model that was the most effective known. This was a combination of extensive school-based experience coupled with close supervision by teacher educators. Other features were to be a flexible programme length and a strong emphasis on the skills of behaviour management. THE DEVELOPMENT PHASE NZGSE’s set-up phase extended from October 1995 to September 1996 during which time the many approval processes were completed. By the end of the development phase NZGSE had acquired premises and equipment, was registered as a private training establishment, was accredited to work in the field of teacher education and had a Diploma of Teaching programme recognised by NZQA and the then Teacher Registration Board.

Ashburton College Phoenix 2014 ASHBURTON COLLEGE PHOENIX 2014 VOLUME 50 As have the past 49 years, 2014 presented Ashburton College students with a wealth LEADERS & STAFF P2 of opportunities; academic, sporting, cultural, or a combination of all three. From stage floorboards to finish lines, basketball to books, any given weekday or weekend would see members of our student populace making the most of these opportunities. Many of our College representatives were even awarded recognition at a local, regional, national, even at an international level. For many, such interests are sparked on days such as Orientation day, as seen above, when the chessboard is a canvas of diverse opportunities our College has on offer. Study nights, sports practices and stage rehearsals. Such opportunities can only happen with the time, help and goodwill of others, and this magazine is an attempt to capture all that goes into celebrating the success of those involved in College life. PRIZE LISTS & To that end, my thanks go to Alesha East for her striking front cover design and Paige ACHIEVERS P 12 Sheehan for her handiwork with the back cover. Additional thanks also go to the journalism students for their contributions. Inspired, this time, perhaps by their All Black encounter, once again the assistance of Jenny Crouchley and Anne Sheehan in the office is much appreciated, as is that of Sheena Tyrrell whose help is always without fuss. Adam and Sophie lead a wonderful student body and are to be applauded for their inclusive and supportive approach in their leadership, so supportive, in fact, that the Staff vs.
