Remembering Port Albert’s Past— The Clonmel—Shipwreck—1841

The wreck of the Clonmel, led to the establishment of the towns of Port Albert, and Alberton in 1841.

History

Clonmel was built in England and launched in 1836, at Birkenhead, near Liverpool. She was 155 feet (47 m) long and about 40 feet (12 m) broad across the paddle boxes. She had two 110 horsepower engines, and was rated at 500 tons burthen, so with 300 tons of cargo she could steam for five days.

She ran around the British Isles for about 15 months before being sold to Sydney owners, was newly copper sheathed and dispatched under Captain Tollervey, leaving The Downs on 20 May and arriving in Sydney on 5 October 1840. She had been purchased to run between Sydney, and Launceston, with the first trip scheduled for 17 November, but was post- poned several times for modifications, notably to allow for the smaller size of coals from Newcastle.

First Voyage

After a series of delays, she left Sydney at 6 p.m. on 1 December 1840, arrived at Port Phillip around 8 am on 9 December, having a scheduled stop at Batemans Bay en route. She left for Launceston and returned. She left for Sydney 15 or 16 De- cember but ran short of coal and was obliged to put in at Batemans Bay, a delay of two days, arriving at Sydney on the eve- ning of 22 December.

Second Voyage—The Shipwreck

Clonmel left Sydney on 30 December, and rounded the South Head against a strong southerly wind. On the morning of 1 January she sighted Ram Head, , by which time the wind had dropped and the sea was smooth. Captain Tollervey steered for Wilsons Promontory. She struck the sandbank at Corner Inlet at a speed of 10 knots between 3 and 4 am on Satur- day 2 January , 1841

A reason ascribed to the misfortune was the ship's mate having reset the course several points to the west while the captain was below, consequently when the captain returned to the deck the ship was 17 miles closer to land than expected.

The crew and passengers were rescued without loss or injury, a shelter and provisions were ferried ashore and a comfortable camp set up. The following morning a volunteer party of five crew and two of the passengers, set out for Melbourne in the whaleboat and then early on the third day they met with a cutter, whose captain brought them to William's Town— Melbourne for which a party was the sent out to retrieve the survivors and the discovery of and establishment of Port Albert began.

Maritime Museum News—Submitted by Venetia Beaney

The Museum frequently hosts group tours from groups such as U3A, Probus, Rotary and commercial tour opera- tors. We can cater for up to 45/50 visitors at a time. If groups arrive around lunch time the usual form is to collect an already ordered lunch of fish and chips from the wharf. This is then enjoyed on the quarterdeck followed by tea, cof- fee and biscuits, a tour of the museum and a short talk on the history of Port Albert. These events are always thoroughly enjoyed by participants as well as museum volunteers and visitors leave with a positive impression of our historical, interesting and beautiful town.

Nautical Trivia. Son of a Gun. Back in the day as you may imagine, sailors were often less than virtuous and every once in a while a ‘lady friend’ of a crewman might give birth to a child on the ship. A good spot for this sort of thing was between the guns on the gun deck. Now let’s say this little rascal isn’t claimed by any of the aforementioned sleazy sailors, the little grommet would sometimes be called a ‘son of a gun’.

Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum

During winter our opening hours are weekends, school and public holidays but despite the shorter times we have still attracted a large number of visitors during the weekends, including folk from New Zealand, Melbourne, Merimbula,Geraldton, WA and amongst other places.

A vivid insight into the early history of Port Albert as the gateway to and its colourful maritime history. 78 Tarraville Rd, Port Albert, Contact # 51832520

Alberton Historical Cemetery Walks Are Back !!!

With the blessing of the Alberton Historical Cemetery Trust , Port Albert Progress Association have been granted the op- portunity to bring back the Alberton Historical Cemetery Walks from October 2019 —April 2020. The Alberton cemetery near Yarram is the regions oldest graveyard. It is also unique in the country as being the only graveyard where the deceased were delivered for burial by river. Situated between Yarram and Port Albert the graveyard which was originally surveyed in 1846 covers approximately 26 acres or 10.5 hectares and has around 1,300 known grave sites. The earliest known burial is that of Robert McClure in 1842. Prior to that, it is thought that the whalers bought their dead up the to this high ground for burial. In talking with Andy Macmeikan ( President ) , when the walks were conducted in the past , it was so successful that at times they had over 500 people attend with cars both sides of the road. To maintain the sensitivity of the surroundings the cemetery walks will be limited to a maximum of sixty people to ensure people’s safety at all times and ensure no damage is made to any part of the cemetery grounds. The walk with take around 1.5 hours with a cost of $ 10.00 per person , all tours will have a guide that will provide inter- esting facts and surprises. Walking tours will start from November ( Melbourne Cup Weekend ) commencing at 6.00pm ( sharp ) . Bookings for the tour’s will be via eventsbrite with available days and times. All proceeds will be shared 50/ 50 with the Cemetery Trust to assist with ongoing maintenance of the cemetery and Port Albert Progress Association to provide additional community activities and contribute to grants on behalf of the commu- nity. If you would like to volunteer as a guide ( which will be a lot of fun ) please contact us via email to : [email protected]

Port Albert Event Planning Working Group

Port Albert Progress Association are looking for assistance from the community to develop an events planning work group with the aim to have regular events not only during the summer months but year round—to have Port Albert as the place to come to all year round. The aim of the working group would be to collaborate events planned for Port Albert and working together to promote Port Albert. Currently the Port Albert Progress Association is looking to run the following events for summer 2019 / 2020 : New Years Eve— In Rutter's Park, to compliment Port Albert Coast Guard , with night markets , farmers market and “hopefully “f with the support of Wellington Shire Council fireworks for the kids Day Anzac Day Port Albert support group for Tarra Festival on Easter Sunday 2 x Community BBQ events Alberton Park Cemetery Walks Port Albert Tennis Court Official Opening with tennis events and sausage sizzle Whilst PAPA are already working towards organizing these events what a GREAT opportunity for everyone to work as one in the community to ensure everyone knows of the great events each part of the community is putting on from the Port Albert Coast Guard , Port Albert Yacht Club , Port Albert Historical Wooden Boats , Anglican Church , Port Albert Racetrack , Port Al- bert Anglers and Maritime Museum — a representative from each community club / association would be perfect on the event working group. ONE GOAL— ONE TOWN—ONE GREAT EVENT PER MONTH Ideally it would be good to have a calendar of events for all groups in Port Albert so that we could advertise via local council s , social media and radio . It would also be helpful to share skills and experience around :

 Event planning and management

 Un derstanding insurance requirements

 Be aware of regulations and council requirements for grants This would allow the planning of events to avoid any clash es, provide more visibility of upcoming events, possibly create ad- vertising savings by creating a package for the whole year that covers all groups and leverage off each other for possible insur- ance discounts, sharing appropriately skilled volunteers and possibly working together to obtain discounted hire costs plus more and ideally a representative for local accommodation providers, local business’s, tourist attractions and each of the com- munity/sporting groups would be great. Come and be part of the fun part in creating events for the community , our community by being part of Jenny’s working group—it will be fun—so please contact Jenny on 0439 68 1187.

History of the Port Albert Tennis Courts—Submitted by Stephen Balhorn

The first known formal tennis game in this coastal area was between Tarraville and Port Albert in 1886, it was won by Tarraville 18 games to 10.

In 1890 a court was constructed on the Bank of Victoria allotment which was to the left of the existing Port Albert Mechanics Institute built in 1880.

A similar club was set up in December 1890 in Port Albert at St Johns Church.

The original Anglican Church which was constructed opposite to the present one and was formally opened in 1868.

In 1884 a destructive scrub fire destroyed the Church and the existing Church was opened on the 26 July 1885.

In early settlement of Port Albert, the Church was the central focus of the community, a place to invigorate the Body and Soul, enabling early settlers to socialize with existing and new residents. ( perhaps such a social hub should still exist to welcome “new – comers” to the town ) Due to the Church being the central hub of the community a similar tennis club to the one on the site of the Bank of Victoria allotment was constructed in 1890 at the new St Johns Church to enable social games to be held.

In 1926 asphalt courts were constructed at Port Albert and renewed in 1934 on Bay Street behind the Sea baths which would have been oppo- site where Queen intersects Bay Street.

The tennis Courts and the Sea Baths were very popular and on a warm day with the tide “coming in” families from surrounding areas would frequent these facilities, salt water being healthy and buoyant, ideal for teaching the young to swim and self- cleaning by the incoming and outgoing tides.

However, the buoyancy of the salt gave the students at Port Albert Primary school a false sense of their swimming ability and when compet- ing in fresh water at the swimming sports in Yarram their ability was shattered.

When the council acquired the land for Rutter’s Park the courts were relocated to the corner of Queen and Raglan Streets and fell into disre- pair.

However, with work done by The Port Albert Progress Association the courts are now in a useable state ( not up to the standard of Roland Garros in Paris however )

Signage was organized by Cr Garry Stephens so that residents and tourists know of the court’s existence and location, Garry also organized the removal of the rubbish on the end of Raglan street and the resurfacing of Raglan street so that you don’t need a 4WD to get to the courts.

Promotion and Marketing of Port Albert—Free WIFI

Over the past few week’s Merv Lowe , President of Port Albert Progress Association has met with the administra- tor at Menniyan to discuss the viability of Port Albert becoming a WIFI FREE town for visitors to Port Albert.

A meeting was conducted at Port Albert and the viability of WIFI is a real goer and it was agreed that further discussions / meetings would take place once Ori & Lisa returned from their “winter trip “.

As commented in earlier additions of the Port Albert Tattler the cost of having FREE WIFI from the General Store to the Port Albert Fish and Chips would be around $ 2600.00 which we would hope that Wellington Shire Council will provide a grant and in light of the new Port Albert Hotel being built in 2020 what a great additional attribute it would be for our town.

Lets make Port Albert the Jewel in the Crown of Gippsland.

Is your smoke alarm ready for retirement?

If your smoke alarm is more than a decade old, it may belong in a museum, not on your ceiling.

CFA Assistant Chief Officer South East Region Trevor Owen is warning the community that out of date smoke alarms could be a liability in an emergency.

All smoke alarms have a 10-year life span and need to be replaced or they may not work when you need them most.

Mr Owen says smoke alarms save lives by providing a critical early warning that could give you time to evacuate safely – but only if they work.

“In a fire, only a working smoke alarm can save your life, "he said.

“We believe that some households have never replaced their smoke alarms and that is concerning.

“The risk of dying from fire is greatest at night when you are asleep. When we sleep we lose our sense of smell. Without a working smoke alarm you may not wake up in time to safely escape.

“If your smoke alarms aren’t working properly, you may miss that vital early warning sign that could save the lives of you and your family.

“CFA and MFB recommend smoke alarms with a 10-year lithium battery, and should be installed in all bedrooms and liv- ing areas.

“When installed and maintained correctly these smoke alarms detect smoke the quickest, giving you more time to evacu- ate.

“If you don’t have a working smoke alarm in your home and a fire occurs, you are four times more likely to die and 26 per cent more likely to suffer serious injuries.“If you do choose to use a 9volt battery smoke alarm, the battery will need to be replaced every year.

“A good reminder is doing it every year at the end of daylight savings or at the start of the new financial year.”

For more information about smoke alarms, visit http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/smoke-alarms/.

Council welcomes Ombudsman report into 90 Mile

Council welcomes the Ombudsman’s investigations and the final report. Council is particularly pleased that the Ombudsman expanded the scope of her review to include fundamental recommenda- tions that will bring this long running saga to an end. Council acknowledges the Ombudsman’s findings that Wellington Shire Council co-operated fully with the investigation, had inherited the problem and has attempted in good faith to resolve this matter working with land-owners, the State Govern- ment and other stakeholders. Council notes the Ombudsman’s finding that overall, Council’s administrative processes have been transparent and lawful. A key recommendation however is that the State Government facilitates the compulsory acquisition of all undevelopable land and return it to public ownership, such as Parks Victoria. To date, all acquisition of land has been voluntary with many property owners choosing to retain ownership. Council will immediately commence a dialogue with the State Government to determine their position on compulsory acquisi- tion and how that process might unfold. To support the recommendation of compulsory acquisition, the Ombudsman has also recommended that Council, as a “gesture of good will”, refund rates on affected non-developable properties. Council has already advised the Ombudsman that it is happy to consider this and is seeking legal advice to understand the mechanisms available to Council to implement such a plan. There are in the vicinity of 1500 affected coastal property owners who have been recently paying a rate of around $60 per year based on the low value of the land. Council has calculated that the maximum liability of all properties back to 2006 to be in the vicinity of $300,000 (prior to 2011, annual rates averaged $30 per property). Council will formally receive the Ombudsman’s report at its 20 August meeting. At this meeting Council will receive updated advice regarding rate refunds and importantly, seek direction from the State Gov- ernment regarding its preferred process for compulsorily acquiring all undevelopable properties.

E-waste recycling solutions in place following state-wide ban

New electronic waste bins are located at the Port of Sale and Yarram Hub for convenient disposal of household electronics. Small household e-waste items such as phones, keyboards, laptops, electronic cords, cameras, batteries, tablets and similar objects are permitted. All Wellington Shire Council household bins and landfill sites are no longer allowed to contain e-waste as per the state-wide ban which took effect 1 July. Instead e-waste can be dropped off at for free at the Port of Sale and Yarram Hub. Larger items will need to be disposed of at transfer stations in Kilmany, , Stratford, Yarram, Loch Sport, Heyfield, Seaspray and Dargo during normal operating hours. Council reminds residents that e-waste is any item that needs a battery, power cord or a plug, which is no longer wanted or working. These items contain potentially hazardous substances and need to be separated from general waste. Wellington Shire Council Mayor Alan Hall said the ban will reduce impact from landfill sites through recycling to reduce our impact on the environment. “We all need to take responsibility for our own waste, whether that’s general household waste or e-waste,” he said. “For the ban to work, we need to people to know about it and understand it. “Please help us to ensure there is no contamination, by thinking carefully about how you will dispose of your unwanted elec- tronics.” To learn more about e-waste, visit Sustainability Victoria’s website @ www.ewaste.vic.gov.au
